Does United Charges Upgrades While Flying Non-rev?

Mon Mar 08, 2004 8:46 am

Hello,

Next weekend, im flying to Chicago from Washington-Dulles on a 747-400. While flying standby, using a companion pass, does United charges people who are flying standby or non-rev to upgrade to first class or business class on its 747s? Does it apply to international flights and/or domestic flights? My friend is going with me since he is flying non-rev and has no clue also. Thanks

Kevin

If you are a companion. You can upgrade to business only. Companions cannot sit in first class on a three class aircraft without a employee with them.

Actually, you are eligible to upgrade to first or business since it's a domestic segment. On international flights you're only able to fly in Business unless your sponsor is with you.

The posters question was not about whether or not a companion COULD upgrade, but if UAL adds extra CHARGES when upgraded. If I remember right from my days with UA... UA's companion pass charges are already so outrageously expensive that they don't charge you additionaly for the upgrade. Of course, the companion isn't charged, the employee's paycheck is.

Wilco, yes, you are right. The employee will be charged the bill. But technically, it's charged to me since I'm paying the flight segment, not her. So, wheather if they charge or not, I'm the one who is paying. I've used companion passes several times, and it works great for me.

DL's policy is identical, but I managed to upgrade on ATL-LGW once only because my friend(who gave me the pass) and I were mutual friends with a gate agent working that departure and he knew I would be traveling, so he made it a point to be there.  Big grin

Thanks all....I'd be gladly to pay a small fee and flying in first class. Last time we flew to ORD using the passes, we paid $50 r/t, so it's not to bad.

I think we have ,isunderstood what you're asking Kevin. Companions can't upgrade from a Y or C seat if that's what they are assigned. But, when you list for the flight you should list for the highest class of service you are eligible for. This allows the agents to give you F or C if it is available.

Companions are at a lower boarding priority that Employees and thier parents. So usually if your in Y its because F or C was filled with Revenue passengers upgrading then Employees and thier family. Everything else that was said is right on the money. If companions get F or C it is charged as a flat fee for Companion travel regarless of cabin.
