1 Hour Transfer Time @ LAX, Will I Make It?

Mon Mar 08, 2004 9:14 pm

Hello,

I plan on arriving at LAX with OZ (from ICN), connecting to UA (to PDX). I have two options, either 1 hour transfer time, or 4,5 hours  Sad . My travel agent says that he can book me on the one-hour one, but with a warning that I might not be able to make it.

What do You think, is it possible to get through LAX immigration, claim luggage, go through customs, change from terminal B to terminal 7 and check security, all in one hour (or actually in 45 minutes, since I have to be at the gate before it closes). I think it sounds like I'm asking for trouble by taking that option, or what do You think??

LAX is my home airport and there's no way you'll be able to make another connection in 1 hours time. Clear customs, then check your bags at UA and head over to the Theme Rest. located in the middle of LAX. Or you could take a cab to a restaurant by the name of The Proud Bird off of Aviation Blvd located 5 - 7 minutes away by taxi and watch arrival traffic for the southern pair of runways in the bar, then take a cab back.

Have a great trip

Thanks for the advice (both on connections and restaurant)!  Big thumbs up I just mailed the travel agent and asked for the "safe" option. I hope for good weather so I can watch some traffic.

Ual747-600,
Very good call. OZ schdeules it's arrivals during peak periods at TBIT. He'll get out of the FIS in 1 hour.

No way, connecting from the Int'l Terminal to the UA terminal will take at least an hour and a half, probably even two because I suspect you will be arriving during a peak period.

If you want a better option than having to get a cab to Proud Bird or eating overpriced food at the Theme Resturaunt, you can just stand on top of the parking garage across from the Tom Bradley (Int'l terminal) and watch planes from there!

Interesting advice. I am arriving from SYD on UA and have just a little over an hour to connect to an other UA flight to IAD. UA assures me I am in "legal time", which may be true, but I do not feel it is in "realistic time" but they will not change my onward flight!

TonyBurr-

I wouldn't worry about that connection for a couple of reasons:
- You'll be arriving at UA's terminal and clearing Immigration/Customs there, so you won't need to change terminals (or you'll only need to go between T-7 and T-6). The backup probably won't be as bad as at the TBIT.
- United will protect you on a later flight if you don't have time to make your connection.

One hour is definitely not enough time to make a connection between an international arrival at the TBIT and United at T-6/7, unless you're really lucky with short lines (you'd need to be able to clear through the U.S. Citizen lines), your checked baggage arrives quickly, and you either catch the interterminal bus immediately or you're able to sprint 3 or 4 terminals down to United -- and then you have to hope that the lines to clear security are short!

Hi!

In the "old days" before 9/11 I'm sure you could do that in 1 hour, now it's impossible!!! It reminds me last November when I flew from FAT to YYZ via PHX with HP, due to a delay leaving FAT HP was unable to keep my following flight to YYZ so they re-booked me with AC. When we arrived at PHX I saw my AC 321 landing but I was very confortable expecting that I would be able to get the AC flight. Just to cut this story short I BARELY got it, I was very, very fortunate..... starting in changing terminals, I landed in Terminal 1 and had to go to Terminal 3 and then the huuuuge line at the metal detector, we did make it because we talked with a very nice TSA lady that opened a space for us otherwise I had to pass my night in PHX. Things now in US Airports get very very long, don't ever get a connection with less than at least 2 hours!

My OZ flight arrives at "Terminal B" on 3pm, according to my itinerary, and my PDX flight leaves from terminal 7.

- United will protect you on a later flight if you don't have time to make your connection.

Maybe, but there are only two flights to choose from that afternoon (after I arrive). 4pm and 7.30pm. I don't want to be stranded @LAX for the night.

What do you have going in PDX? I can drive you around in my SAAB

Thanks, for the offer (I can drive You around in my SAAB when You come to Sweden Big grin ), but I have relatives in Gresham and Troutdale which I have promised to visit.

I have booked the 7.30 pm flight LAX-PDX as I won't take the risk of spending the night on the airport. If we arrive early, and I manage to clear customs etc, I'll try to rebook to the earlier flight.

Jox,
Just an FYI. UA usually stations an agent in the interline recheck area of TBIT. Upon exiting Customs, follow the signs for "Connections". The agent usually occupies one of the desks to right of the ramp entering the recheck hall. There may not be a sign indicating the presence of UA. However, if other airline agents are there (usually are), they'll identify him/her to you.
You may get to PDX early if all goes well. Best of luck!!!

From postings in here it seems that LAX has a horrible reputation for immigration. Do people find this true? I came into EWR the other day from LIM on CO and was through Immigration ( I was the first there) and got my checked bag and through customs in under 20 minutes ( I missed my connecting flight to YYZ because they had a schedule change and only had a 40 minute flex time and the LIM flight was 20 minutes late - Got yelled at by a CO customer Dis Service Agent, but that is another story). Actually I have found the time through Immigration at PHL, IAD pretty good. Much quicker then I expected. I seem to be lucky that other flights are not arriving at the same time. But is LAX as bad as it seems?

I flew LHR - HNL via SFO on the 'direct' flight (UA931) with UA back in December 2003. The Q was so long at Immigration that I got to the gate for the onward portion of the flight at 6:22pm - the departure time was 6:25pm!!

Unfortunately, my luggage didnt make it - i had to wait until the first flight to arrive at HNL from SFO the next morning before i could get a change of clothes  Sad

Not a good start to a vacation might i add!!

Customs and Immigration is chonically understaffed at LAX. The problem is a combination of budget and geography. Budget is self explanatory. Geographically: though the L. A. area has a large pool of Customs agents, they are used in multiple areas. Some may work a stint at LAX for awhile, but then get transferred to work at the Port of L. A. or Long Beach. This obviously diminishes the agent pool. International arrivals at ONT are staffed by L. A. area agents. Even at LAX, as FIS facilities were opened at other terminals, staffing for those facilities was drawn from the existing pool.

No - don't rush flights and hurry, especially after a 10 hour or so flight from the far east. Take a rest, maybe nap even or just relax/shower for a few hours and then be refreshed for your flight to PDX.

Even if you did make it, somehow, your bags definitely would not! Take the 4.5 hour layover. You will be exhausted after the long flight.

Yeah I fully agree that Customs and Immigration CAN be bad at LAX. For example a year ago my second cousin was connecting from NZ at Terminal 2 to UA in Terminal 7 for a flight to SEA and she missed her connection despite the fact that she had 4 hours in LAX. This isn't typical, but it can happen. Some terminals are worse than others, and TBIT is especially bad. The UA terminal (which would be wonderful if all Star arrivals came in, but they don't) is better, because it feels a little more spread out, doesn't have the same number of flights, has 1 airline planning arrivals and spacing them evenly, and finally has a higher percentage of business travelers over leisure travelers, which speeds things up. LAX has bad backups in immigration, but also it doesn't help that the terminals are very spread out. The distance between terminals is great, and the buses are relatively infrequent, so it is difficult. The day when the big alliances consolidate into their own terminals would be a great day.

If I have an option, my favorite of the west coast airport is SEA. LAX is backlogged, and SFO is better but still has fog, but SEA is nice and relatively compact. I also like the fact that with the new upgrades you will be able to get to any gate without leaving security. OZ to SEA connecting to PDX would be my choice, but LAX works if you have a long connection time like you do.

Ive never had a problem with LAX customs really, coming in on VS 023 I think it is, to Terminal......1? But that flight usually gets in at 6.30 or so ( scheduled for 6.50) and at that time its the only one in. Now ive done the 07 flight that gets in at 3.30 and its mayhem with a KLM flight and an ANZ flight there as well and you can be waiting a little while, but never 4 hours. I usually have to catch an 8.30 HP flight up to RNO and I have always made it- running, yes, but I make the flight  Smile

OK, now you have me worried about a 1 hour connection in LAX, even if it is from one UA to another. I just called UA to see if I could change my connection but they said my connect time is considered "legal" they would not change it. I said it might be legal, but is it realistic. She did not laugh!

Guess I will just take my chances ( I arrive around 11:00 AM) with all the others!!!!!!

Hi!

Regarding customs at LAX I can't complain, when we arrived we came for 1 year with a F1 student Visa and the guy there was spectacular, very understandable guy, nice and really helped us a lot, it was excelent. On the way out it was the same, even the guys in the TSA were great, I tell this because we had 8 pieces of luggage and at the beggining someone said that we probably needed to screen our luggage in a huge line, but with the help of the Swissport guys and the TSA guys they did check our luggage by the SWISS check-in, so it was great and even the TSA guy said "Sir today it's your lucky day!!!" and I know it was!!!

IMHO, LAX should have a standard Intl to Dom connect time of 90 minutes.

I would not advise on a 1 hr connect. Your travel agent is doing you a disservice in essence by setting you up to misconnect. Then you may have a more difficult time if the later flight is full.

There's no way in hell I'd do a 1 hr I-D interline connect, especially if you're rechecking bags.
