Royal Jordanian - What Significance Is Alia?

Tue Mar 09, 2004 1:37 am

Is ALIA TRANSPORTATION AND GENERAL TRADE CO. The beneficial owners (ie: Government agency) of RJ - and if so - what other companies belong to the group?

Anything new going on for RJ? Heard some rumours about a A343 or two - any news there?

Rgds,

CM

They will be getting 4 A340-200s (not 300s) over the next year or two to meet increases in demand and make the airline more competitive with newer jets (replacing A310s).

As for if they are opening any new routes, they are expected to launch direct flights between Amman and Alexandria (Egypt) by the end of the year with A320s.

I think Royal Jordanian was originally established/named Alia by King Hussein in honor of his first wife Queen Alia-also AMM is Queen Alia International Airport.

I believe Alia is also Arabic for "High Flying"?

They were called Alia until the early 1990s. (Actually, "Alia, Royal Jordanian" and then they just dropped the Alia bit).

I thought HM King Hussein had a daughter called Alia as well?

I read that in the launching ceremony for RJ, the MC dropped a massive crow bar on his sandal and cried Ali Ahhhhh, Royal Jordanian. Mind you, it was in the Sun, so you can't believe everything you read.

SQ25J is right, the late King Hussein who was a pilot and an aviation enthusiast named the airline after his wife as well as Amman Intl Airport, later the name was dropped from the airline.

I wonder if Queen Alia and the daughter of ex- Pan Am CEO Hallaby who mas married to King Hussein were the same person. She was the 3rd or 4th wife of the king

King Hussein's first wife Alia died in a helicopter crash in the Jordanian desert after a flying visit to open a new hospital. After that RJ was called Alia for about ten years the new airport was named after her (Hussein falling for and marrying one of the architects-Queen Noor) and a giant mausaleum was built for her. I think this name quite suits an airline.
