I wonder how this would affect CO's EWR-HKG route. Fare war? Different customer base?

I agree, it's about time--this was long overdue. Looks like they're counting on mainly O&D traffic, though...the flight times are great for that, but not so good for connecting beyond HKG. The late arrival in HKG allows for only a few connections, and the departure from HKG is too early. Maybe they are counting on AA feed through JFK, although I would rather have had one-stop access to more cities in SE Asia. Still, it's good to hear that they're adding service.

That is good news for CX is begun nonstop from JFK to HKG and after UA was used with their flight to HKG before. It would make continues to HKG flight with the stop in YVR.

Great news - and long awaited!

Wonder if they'll be getting more A340-600s, or will they take them off the SYD route? (Hope not!)

I thought Cathay had this for a little bit but pulled it. United Airlines surely had it two years ago for a few months. There were even articles in the New York Times about it!

I can't wait for the fare wars to begin between Cathay and Continental. Let's get United back in the mix, so we can have a party (that's good for the consumer)!

Wonder if they'll be getting more A340-600s

At this point, they're not even sure they're going to renew the leason on the ones they currently have, let alone burden themselves with more of them.

Will it be just for the summer?

no

Also, does anyone know what load penaltiies there might be?

Shouldnt be too too bad. A346 doesnt have as much range as 772ER, but still a good bit more than the 744s that have done this routing.... not that they're good examples to follow  Smile

That, and Kennedy has a significantly longer runway than Liberty, which helps.

American does not fly ORD-HKG. No OneWorld Airline does. Only UA.

This is a big yawn. Continental has been doing it for three years now and UA had a brief, nonstop from April to August 2001.

This is still a significant flight, as CO are the only other airline operating this route currently. Things are looking really good in terms of new flights at JFK this summer.

Be interesting to see if CO launches any competitive incentives around that time... particularly since I want so badly to visit HKG, and they're just about my only nonstop option there from the USA.

ConcordeBoy,
I am pretty sure the a.net locals with give you a warm welcome  Big thumbs up

Great news for CX, as NY do hold a strong customer base to support the service, and I hope they will annouce the LHR-JFK route as soon as possible, that will help CX to enchance the position around the world a s a global airline, and more 'supporters' will soon be follow  Big thumbs up

Good news,

But one thing to note is that it suddenly came when SQ offered their own route NY-SIN direct - coincidence?

Noted on UA Feb figures that Asian flights are growing heavily, more 744 replacing the 777 soon, won't miss the 2-5-2.

HKG-JFK is good news for oneworld frequent flyers who have always need to stop in Vancouver.

Since the JFK route will be served by the A346, I'm guessing we won't see them here at LAX anymore?

Also, will the flights be daily?

Yeah I was wondering if I was sniffing glue when I read that Oneworld had HKG service from O'Hare. American would kill to offer that service, but when and IF it is ever offered they better be prepared for a major battle with UA. Regarding the CX LHR-JFK routing, again, I honestly dont see it happening. Can you imagine the dogfight started - especially by Delta. Bermuda II allows for four carriers to offer service from Heathrow to the US. I think Cathay would be allowed to code share on AA or BA from Heathrow but I dont see them gaining direct access on that route without a major overhaul to Bermuda II. And I dont see that happening anytime in the near future. Just one mans opinion.

Bermuda II only applies to US/UK airlines. Not 5th freedom (AI, Kuwait, or CX)

US has already given HK airlines the 5th freedom rights required (in return for US 5th freedom rights in HK)

It is the EU that isn't going to approve the HK/ UK deal, US airline concerns a non issue.

EU isn't going to approve due to internal reasons (wanting to show they have negotiation authority, not UK) and competition concerns (HK-Australia only being offered to VS, not all EU airlines)

Yes, they do have the rights, but the EU has not give the green light for CX to start the flight due to some protest from BMI as well as the others.. I really hope they will start this flight asap..!!

How does HKG-JFK-HKG compare with SIN-LAX-SIN distance-wise? BKK-JFK-BKK would be an extremely long route as well.

Thai Airways should have BKK-JFK-BKK as soon as possible! They can use equipment such as 345/744ER/772LR/773ER for this route which would look very nice.

I thought UAL had a round-the-world nonstop. Or, did it get vanquished when the LAX-HKG route get cancelled. I thought it went something like LAX-HKG-DELHI-LHR-ORD-LAX or something like that.

UA did have a RTW flight, flights 1 and 2 (depending on the direction). I think it went via EWR and later IAD (not ORD). It ended when they suspended the DEL-HKG segment. I believe there was a dispute with the Indian government, who wouldn't let them fly anything larger than a 763 on that route. If memory serves, UA wanted to use a 744, which would have made things much easier from a crew/equipment scheduling perspective.

i think CX hasn't announced HKG-JFK flight yet but CX is working on the flight plan right now using A346 and flying via Polar if the radiation level is acceptable for human.

American would kill to offer that service

AA already has the rights to offer the service, but 1) wanted enhanced cooperative authority with CX before launching, which they have; and 2) will more than likely wait until more 772ERs arrive.

LAX-HKG-DELHI-LHR-ORD-LAX

LAX-HKG-DEL-LHR-WAS-LAX, and it does not operate any longer.

and flying via Polar if the radiation level is acceptable for human

CO's been flying the route for nearly 3 years now, the radiation affects arent exactly unknown

I wouldn't worry about radiation levels, I hear they use lead based paint on the A345, A346, and the 777......
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

as far as i know, there're 8 levels of radiation. from what CX says, if the radiation is less than 3, it'll fly via polar, if higher than 3, re-routing is needed.

Even when SQ launches SIN-NYC nonstop, they won't exactly have a RTW service as I don't believe they have flights crossing the N. American continent; something CX currently have with their YVR-JFK service.

About Radiation

Wed Mar 10, 2004 2:02 pm

First off, I am still waiting for the offical press release... can't wait because I want to get some award seats before they will be all gone soon. As a New Yorker, I will love to fly CX nonstop from JFK to HKG.

Second, about radiation, I am not sure about it, but I recalled during earlier this year or late last year, CO's nonstop flights from EWR to HKG had to stopover at Seattle a number of times due to radiation-related issues and lasted for two weeks or so.

But the eastbound flight to NYC remains okay as they often use the regular circle flight path from HKG to EWR to take advantage of the tail wind in the winter season.

Polar radiation does affect flights. I'm sure not every single CO flight to HKG uses polar route or v.v.

CX HKG-JFK flight has already announced today. It'll start service on 1st July NOT 1st June!

I thought that when UA did the Nonstop JFK-HKG flight CX was to start one too. I remember getting a flyer in the mail about the new service. I guess it never ended up starting. Did UA's flight do that terrible? Do you think CO will make EWR-HKG daily again to compete with CX?

UA's flight tried to hoist a whole 747-400 over the pole. If I'm not mistaken, they had to block over 100 seats per flight.

CX took a good hard look and decided against it.

PERSONALLY, even SQ starts their SIN-JFK service and with connection in JFK to AMS/FRA for SIN Bound, because they don't have transcontinental flight within North American, they are not RTW!

I'm sure not every single CO flight to HKG uses polar route or v.v

Well, they chose to divert rather than use the poles during the recent solar flares. Other than that, there's rarely been a radiation-related problem for them nor anyone else.

SQ will likely beat CX to a RTW route, depending on what route they take from SIN to EWR. If like CX, the flight path goes over Eastern China rather than straight over central Siberia, SQ's SIN-EWR-AMS-SIN will be a RTW route.

Unfortunately, Singapore Airlines Limited will discontinue the AMS - EWR segment.

However, we could go by:

Singapore - New York Area - Frankfurt - Singapore
Anyone can fly, only the best Soar.
