SJC Observation Deck

Tue Mar 09, 2004 9:04 am

I was at SJC Terminal C Last Friday (3-5-04) and I noticed a door near one of the Security Checkpoints (the one for UA, HP, NW) labeled "Observation Deck." I wanted to try see where it went but an unfriendly looking TSA agent was glaring at me and I didn't have a ticket that day--just dropping off a friend--so I decided not to test my limits. I was wondering if anyone knows if there actually is an observation deck and if you can go out there anytime or if you have to get a pass or something? Any info is greatly appreciated!

u don't need to do that at all, go the root of the Terminal A's short term parking lot, it's higher than the terminal itself, so you get an unobstracted view of the whole airport from that vantage point.

They really should close that up for security reason.

I have been to San Jose twice the past two years for the Game Developers Conference. Both times, I have enjoyed taking pictures from that deck for quite some time. Never has anyone checked me out. In fact, 2 years ago, my fiancee'/VP came a couple of days after I did and I met her at the airport. While I was waiting, I went outside for an hour or so and took a lot of pictures. I certainly didn't have a ticket that night!

Normally, I do the whole parking garage thing here in Omaha. I hadn't thought about doing it at SJC! Since I flew UAL both times, I am not even sure where that parking garage is! I know where the A terminal is, but I would have to look at my pictures of the field to ident. the right garage. That should be a lot better since my main frustration with the outside platform is that there is a terminal sticking out just north of it. You can't see terminal A or the north side of the field. *sigh*  Sad

Anyway, another GDC in two weeks! Thanks for the info!

Wow... just checked a climbout picture I took last year. Are you talking about the north parking structure or the southern one? The north one is taller, it seems, but might be a little farther down field from the action.

(It will be nice to have my scanner along for the ride this year!)

The observation deck at Terminal C is pure crap. You really cannot see much at all.

A few years ago I used to go to the roof of the ACM Aviation building located at the south end of the field just past Terminal C. It offers a great view of both arrivals and departures when 30L and 30R are in use and you can see all the way down to the north end of the field. I am not sure if you are actually allowed up there, but I used to walk up there frequently without incident. This was, of course pre- 9/11. Actually my friend was working there at the time, but I never used that as a way to gain access to the roof. I'm not sure if it was, but I always assumed it was ok.

The observation deck is open. The entrance is before security. It's a pretty good spot, you can see takeoffs and landings, plus many aircraft taxiing to/from the gate. This time of year the lighting is pretty good for photos in the early morning.
