Best City View Seen From An Aircraft?

Wed Mar 10, 2004 2:05 am

What is the best city view you have seen from an aircraft?

I think the approach to LHR is amazing, the Thames, The London Eye, Houses of Parliament etc is fantastic!

DCA outbound over the Potomac.

JFK/EWR/LGA with Manhattan approaches or overflies.

Flying to MKE and passing abeam of Chicago on the Lake Michigan flyway. Gorgeous.

I'd have to say the evening approach into LAS from PIT 2 years ago on July 4. It looked like a war-zone with all of the small fireworks from scattered sources around the valley, but it was incredibly beautiful.

My favorite is NYC. I love the view you have of the
city on the approach on EWR, along Hudson river.
It is incredibly beautiful, but can also look really gross
if it is a very smoggy day.

My all time favorite is when you are sitting on the left side of the aircraft coming into Chicago O'Hare on 27L or 27R from the south. You come up over the water and the view of downtown and the city is amazing. And at night the lights are incredible.

I have departed LAS for ATL late at night and the view of the strip is amazing. They took off west-bound and circled to the north before heading east. This offered a GREAT view of the Strip and downtown hotels.

Sammyhostie. Sorry I couldn't disagree more, can't think of many places more boring (sightwise) than London, when you can see it that is !.

The Millennium Dome, your'e kidding right, looks more like a giant flat hamburger just that you might find in London.

Las Vegas at Dusk or Night - Awesome, absolutely awesome.

Los Angeles during the early hours - aaahh those swimming pools and the fantastic coastline.

Seattle or Portland - Pretty damn amazing with the incredible cascades as a backdrop.

I guess North America does it for me, can't think of anywhere in Europe (Citywise).

P.S

Chicago - Amazing at night with the massive Lake (Looks More Like The Sea).

I have taken all these trips mentioned and none of then come close to La Guardia - approaching from North (ie from Boston, Buffalo, Canada) but landing from the south.

Get a seat on the LEFT side facing forward

The initial approach is over Long Island sound, the plane turns west and flies directly over La Guadia - then across Queens then over Manhatten - The Skyscrapers are barely 1000 feet above you (clearly the absolute minima) and you can almost touch them! You fly directly over central park.

Then the plane turns south (left) over the Hudson and continues its descent at Sky Scraper level. At the tip of Manhatten the plane does a wide 180 turn - so you get a great view of the Downtown Sky scapers (alas not WTC) and then does its final approach flying over Brooklyn!

Nothing comes close to that - it is amazing!!!!!

SEA is my favorite. Especially the approach from the north going over the city. SFO is fun to for similar reasons. I like the water/city views though PHX, LAS are fun at night.

Cheers!

ORD is spectacular over lake Michigan on a nice day.
LAX is good for counting swimming pools.
Most impressive for me was Mexico City just for the sheer size of the City just seems to go on and on!!

Mexico City beats them all, if you land when it's dark outside, then you are literally flying over a sea of lights for about 15 (or even longer) minutes.

The World Trade Center was my best view. But after that, I think landing into SYD coming over the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Last time I was in such a flight was back in May of 2001. I'm not sure if due to security reasons the airspace over these 2 monuments is restricted or not.

Flew SFO-JFK on America West's A320. The pilot requested a tour route from ATC after take off from SFO. I was a clear, cold morning. We leveled at two thousand feet, hung a left after rotation, flew over the Bay Bridge, another left, flew over the Golden Gate, hung a Ueee and blasted off to JFK. It was beautiful.

SCf158...you're absolutely right, I forgot about Geneva.

Approaching from the west, the site of Mt.Blanc and The rest of the French/Swiss Alps, simply fantastic.

GVA, nice city too.

I agree with TrnsWrld. ORD is fantastic in/outbound when you fly over downtown and the lake. When there is heavy lake affect fog, all you can see is the top of several of the tallest skyscrapers poking through. Simply cool.

Conversely, when you are on the ground in the Wrigleyville and surrounding areas, the ac on approach are cool too. The UA 747's and 777's just seem to be putting along, just hanging there. I love watching the planes on approach from that part of town.

I agree with you... Mexico City by night is something truly amazing! Especially if you have a chance to do a go-around during short final and got a second look of the city like me on KL 747-400... Big grin

SFO to SNA at night, sitting on left side of plane, awesome views of SF Bay area as the plane takes over an 180 degree left turn, then great views of LA and coastal light as you land at SNA.

Vegas baby....especially at night. I will never forget my first trip to LAS...we were coming in at about 10 pm on a Friday night and I remember as we came over that last range of mountains and you just look down in the valley and there it is...it was the most amazing thing ever!!!!!! I can't remember anything else ever making my jaw drop like that

Overflying Dubai in the night at 12000 meters is an unforgettable experience. I was on LH business class at a window seat on a flight between India and Europe. It was magic and tonic to see down, at the ground level, so many lights in the Arabian night, a real evidence of human life.  Wow!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Wow!

Cheers. Kilavoud.

For me it's the views coming into DUB at night, just seeing the good ol' lights of home is a great feeling!

Second to that: flying AMS FCO, we flew over the Alps, fantastic view.

Thirdly, it has to be when we flew AMS AGP, coming in over the mountains is some sight!!!

I guess we're all a little partial to our hometowns. ELP is particularly nice at night when approaching from the west and flying over the downtown area with the lights of El Paso and Juarez filling the pass!! Even in the daytime, the mountains make a nice backdrop for approaches from the west.

BUT...I have got to go along with all the votes for LAS. Truly the city of lights!  Big thumbs up

TransWrld is right about Chicago. Years ago I was enroute STL-MDW, at night, aboard a Southwest Airlines 737, where I would change planes and then fly from MDW-CLE. Anyway, as we prepared to land, as soon as we descended below the lowest clouds, I found myself staring down at an endless platform of orange lights, both in length and width, with the tall buildings of Chicago standing seemingly as high as we were in the air! Paris is not the city of lights at night! Chicago is! The most beautiful site of any city I have ever seen in the air, yes, even when I saw London and New York they did not match up to Chicago.

Last May I flew IAD-LHR on a UA 763. It was the morning depature on a crystal clear day. We flew over BWI, MTN, ILG, PHL, TTN, EWR, ground zero-Manhattan, LGA, HPN, BDL and, from a distance, you could see BOS. I had my camera in the overhead, never expecting to see all those airports. I'll always keep it under the seat from now on.
