Why Do BA Only Codeshare On LHR-DUB Route?

Wed Mar 10, 2004 4:43 am

As the heading says, why doesn't British Airways fly its own aircraft on the LHR-DUB route. Currently all flights are code-shared with Aer Lingus, who use A320s and A321s. Aer Lingus operate around 14 daily flight compared to BD who only have 6. So why is BA missing from the route?

This was one of the reasons behind the concept of oneworld - so that members in the alliance wouldn't have to dedicate resource to routes that one of the other partners would be better suited to. LHR-DUB is one of these, as DUB is EIs main hub. They have dominated this route for many years before oneworld even existed, so it made a lot of sense for them to continue operating it with the BA codeshare.

BA used to fly this route many years ago,you even found L-1011-500's on the route at times!

BA never made money on the route, hence it being dropped.

Once upon a time BA, or BEA as it then was, was not allowed to fly the route. The 1946 Anglo-Irish traffic agreement gave Aer Lingus exclusive UK-Eire traffic rights, (with BEA having 40% of Aer Lingus shares at this time). This agreement was revised in 1956 to permit competative services on Dublin-UK routes, and BEA's holding was reduced to 10%.

How could a relatively small airline like EI come to dominate a route at the expense of a large airline like BEA/BA? DUB was EI's hub indeed, however at the same time LHR was BA's hub!

Are there perhaps other examples of routes where a "David" type airline could oust a "Goliath" type airline?

> BA never made money on the route

Why not? Did EI? What was EI's critical competitive advantage over BA here?

Roughly how much of the EI traffic between DUB and LHR is origin-destination traffic versus connecting traffic?

Thanks

What I've heard is that FR has the biggest marketshare on the DUB-LHR/LGW/STN routes.

FR only fly the DUB-STN, not to LGW or LHR.

FR can't afford to fly to LHR because of the landings fees.
