Plane You've Been On W/ Fewest Pax

Wed Mar 10, 2004 3:03 pm

What's the biggest plane you've flown with the smallest pax? For me, one experience was on a BA flight from LHR-LAX in August 1999...in my coach section, there were literally 15 other people (in my section, that is)...so basically I had the window seat for example, and every other seat in the whole row (all 10 seats in the 747) were left unoccupied !!. also, on an AA 757 from IAD-LAX in June of 2000, there weren't too many people on board that plane either. How about you?

i forgot the year, but i was onboard a UAL Boeing 757 SJU-ORD with a stop at JFK. The flight to JFK was rather crowded, but the next leg to ORD probably had only about 35 passengers onboard.

Plane You've Been On W/ Fewest Pax

Once I was supposed to fly on an ID ticket JNB-FRA on a Saturday night but the flight was full and I was left behind. There was no flight scheduled for Sunday night at that stage so I went to change my flight to JNB-ZRH, to be told that there was indeed a flight to Frankfurt that night, but it was very new in the schedule and not many people knew about it.

Downside: it went JNB-CPT-FRA which added a good few hours to the total flight time.

Upside: because no one knew about it, 80 pax on a 742!

After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Plane You've Been On W/ Fewest Pax

Wed Mar 10, 2004 3:15 pm

SFO-JFK it was shortly after 9/11 and there was about 40 pax in Y class and about the same percentage of pax in the other classes. It was great that we all got to sit in our own rows and sleep but I did stare out the window and could see the many long black trails from the military patrols. It was depressing and being that I was in the WTC a week before it happened I did cry for about an hour, the F/A asked if I was ok and ended up talking to her for a while just about how mad I was, and how the hot dog guy in the square who after I dropped my hot dog on the ground gave me a new one for free was, and how the place were we got our play tickets was, and how even though it was the biggest building out there it was as if it was a small complex, no different than our normal jobs, weather it's a ramp agent, stock broker, pilot, ATC, etc. It was all the same. I get sad every time someone uses 9/11 as an excuse to go to war. It might have been the reason but it's not something to debate over. It happened and no one will ever forget that hot, September day when the world stopped. I'm sorry if I got a little side track. But to get back onto the ?, there was about 100 pax on board the UA 767. Sad

Hong Kong to Beijing last year during the Sars outbreak. Me and 3 other people on an KA 330. Bliss.

Also, Bangkok to Beijing 2 days after the Tiananmen Square massacre. Thai's DC-10 took 2 of us up there.

A330Fan1,

You will think I am making this up, but it really did happen.

About 6 years ago, I missed a connection in ORD on my way to FLL. It was late and there was bad weather in the Chicago area.

Delta canceled their last flight to FLL, and if I connected through ATL, I would have had to spend the night at ATL.

The counter agent was GREAT, and knew I was really tired and frustrated. She told me that the pilots and crew were taking the L1011 to FLL "EMPTY" to position the aircraft for a morning run.

She managed to get me on the plane - and I was the ONLY passenger. No kidding.

They couldn't have been nicer . . . and I had all the food and drink I could handle - as well as 2.5 hours of great conversation with the F/A's.

On a Western B707 from HNL to LAX First Class was Empty. Us two NRs were told by the stews were the FULL prime rib was and said they were going to help out in coach and to help ourselves to the food and bar- we did 4.5 hours of gluttony.

Not counting ferry flights with NO pax had a Qantas from Fiji to Honolulu that was almost completly empty. So much so that after the meal in first I came back and used a full row to lay out and ease my BAD sunburn

I used to work for Wardair in YVR.

Back in 1988/89 the marketing "gurus" thought it was a good idea to run a daily YVR-LGW route in the winter. This was a VERY seasonal summer route then. I remember a few flights going out with around 18 - 40 passengers on an A310. Needless to say, Wardair was gobbled up by PWA Corp (Canadian Airlines) within a year. Shame.

Twice I flew on a ACA/UAX CRJ all alone with just the flight crew of 3. They were both early morning flights to HPN. I was working for the company then so the flightcrew kept the door of the cockpit open and we talked the whole way up to HPN. It was really cool.

I flew with BA from LHR-FRA on a B767-300 and there were only like 30 passengers on the whole flight. What was surprising was the fact it was the first flight of the day to FRA so I expected the flight to be full with businessmen/women trying to get a full day of work in Germany.

I know it's not as exciting as the L1011 flight all by yourself, but I flew from Spokane to SEA on WN with 12 people once. I remember thinking how nice it was.

One of our FA's told me a story about a flight shortly after 9/11 where she worked a flight from NY to the west coast with one passenger. She even took a picture of the guy sitting all alone with the crew. She said it was the easiest money she'd ever made.

Back in 1987 I joined my mom and brother on Mexicana flight 807 (if I remember correctly) for the morning 727 run from O'Hare to Cancun and there were eight of us on the plane. Although there were only eight passengers, a teenage kid (about my age) was beaming because the night prior he went to the Madonna concert at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wis. He was wearing a concert shirt he had brought.

Delta On Christmas Eve

Thu Mar 11, 2004 11:35 am

On Christmas Eve of 2001, I was catching a 9:50 p.m. flight form Orlando to Atlanta. Usually this is a packed flight, but on this night there were only 17 people on board - the airport was eerily quiet and empty. We were on a 777 (the one with in the Olympic figureskater livery.) When we boarded, the ticket agent took out boarding passes, and gave us new ones. They upgraded all of us to First or Business Class. It was a very kind gesture and a wonderful flight!

I was on a Twin Otter on precision Airlines from RUT to LGA in the early 1980 s, and I was the only PAX! The crew let me sit at row 1, and they gave me headphones! We orbited Danbury, CT as there was fog at LGA, and we landed on R/W 4 late, but what a fun trip!

CHC-SYD on QF 744 in '97. Only about a dozen people in the rear economy section.

Also SYD-SIN, again QF 744 in '97, maybe 30 people in the rear economy section.

ORD-YYZ on UA 732, yet again '97, about 20 people.

JFK-AMS on KL in 2000. Scheduled aircraft was a 743M, switched for a straight 743. Only about 20 of us in the rear economy section (which would have been cargo) with the front economy section pretty full.

Of course, you then get those flights where every seat taken!

Well the story I always love to tell is back in September of 2000, I flew on an American Eagle Saab-340 from BOS to HPN. The plane had eight passengers on board, and seven of them were my family.

On an American Eagle ATR-72 from MIA-NAS there were exactly 5 passengers on board. New Year's day 2003. It made me wonder why they didn't just use an ATR-42.

Also on one occasion on SR MD-80 ZRH-LCA there were literally not more than 15 people on the whole plane. Not including crew of course.

I was the sole passenger on a Delta 767-400 from ATL-MCO (no F/As, just pilot, copilot, and me) in Spring 2002. This was a ferry flight.

In Dec. 2001, I flew on a DL 757 from ATL-BNA with 5 pax on board; everyone was upgraded to F/C...

In I think winter 1994 I flew TPE-PDX on DL and FC was empty, there were 5 of us in Business (my family) and I peeked back at coach and it looked really sparse... oh but how I loved the MD-11 for transpacific... such a nice ride.... service was great the entire flight- i think that we had about 4 FA's for the 5 of us... I was 16 and spent the entire flight watching the PTV's (first segments with PTV's). It's no wonder that DL stopped that flight, and closed their PDX min-hub

As a paying passenger: NW DC-10 DTW-SEA with 20

As a non-rev: I was the only passenger on a 44 seat AE RJ YYZ-BOS after the plane had a 8 hour delay waiting for deicing

As working crew: We were going JFK-LHR, they had moved all of our passengers to other LHR flights because they thought they were going to have to keep our A/C to use for the NRT flight in the morning as that plane was stuck somewhere. At the last minute, that stuck A/C got out, and we took the last 5 passengers that hadn't been moved to other flights. We put them all in F/C so they could have a good story to tell.

DAC-NYC in 1995 in Biman. The flight left DAC on the night of EID, the biggest festival after the month of Ramadan. The DC-10 was almost empty. Many passengers, including me, slept flat in the middle five seats. Cabin crews invited me to lay down flat in the middle five seats (by lifting up the handles between seats) and take a nap, when they saw me trying to sleep in my seat. I never got that kind of service in the economy class of any other airlines.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

BNE (Brisbane) to OOL (Coolangatta) on a TAA DC-9, just me. And BPT (Beaumont) and IAH (Houston) Continental RJ - Just me again. It was rather funny when at BPT, Instead of saying we are now boarding all passengers, the gatehouse attendant simply announced "Mike, lets go". Even though I realized it was a lightly loaded A/C, it still took me off guard. Still had to do the gate security.

IB MD-88 from San Sebastian-Madrid. At the time of an ETA scare in the Basque region. Maximum of 30 passengers on board, and due to the tension, I don't actually recall any audible conversation between the passengers. I din't feel any fear but I guess they did; you could hear a pin drop!

Otherwise, hop on an Aerovip Jetstream 32 off-season: 5-8 passengers!

Williamsport, PA to Pittsburgh, PA on USAirways Express. It was just my dad, sister, myself and one other passenger on a Dornier 328. I actually didn't see the flight attendant at all that flight. No wonder US got a bad reputation for service! There were only 4 of us and she stayed seated the whole flight (I realize its not long but we didn't even get a drink service.)

i was on BA LHR-JFK in january, the last sunday night flight, i assumed it would be busy, i was wrong.

in the back coach cabin, myself included there were 9 pax, of course the guy sitting directly behind me who complained about my reclining seat, i thought he was joking, since there were obviously so many other seats he could move to.

he complained he hadnt enough leg room, being 5-7. i am 6-3. he didnt get it.

but it was a great flight otherwise!

Not too long ago I flew BWI-ATL on a 767-200 with only three passengers. My sister, brother-in-law and I all work for the airlines so we were non-reving back to ATL on the last flight of the night. Due to bad weather earlier in the day, there had been a ATC ground stop into ATL delaying all flights including our own. Since the loads were very light, the agents had transferred all the passengers booked for the last flight on the earlier one leaving only the three of us on a plane with 202 seats.

1983 - Western ran a 6AM flight JNU-ANC on a 727-200. The agency I worked for was hdqtrd in ANC, so we would frequently fly up on the morning flight and come home that afternoon. We knew the JNU ATO staff well and it wasn't uncommon for them to call us and tell us that we were the only ones booked, so if we'd hurry up and get our butts to the airport they'd put us up front and we coule leave a few minutes early. I guess the plane/crew had a tight turn in ANC, so they liked getting up there w/ a few minutes to spare.
