Longest Flights...

In terms of miles, it's JFK-Johannesburg 7960miles. SAA

LAX-MEL ranks a close second 7930miles. UA and Qantas

Other notibles:
ORD-HKG...UA
ATL-Johannesburg...SAA
MSP-HKG...NW

All are with a 747-400

The longest A340 flight I can think of is SFO-HKG, which is 7200miles, I think. And that's with CX.

VAncouver to HK is 13hrs with a 747-400 (Canadian and Cathay), but it's 15 hrs on a A340 (air Canada).

Man, could you imagine being airborne for 15+ hours! HNL 43, welcome to the forum. May I ask the significance of your username?

Little bit off the subject, but one of the longest flights per se I can think of is ANZ 744 service Auckland-LAX-FRA and back. The flight goes half way around the globe. Can´t imagine flying the entire Auckland-FRA route in the middle seat in the back of coach.

Answer To Question(which Fly Longer: A340 Or B747)

Thu Jan 27, 2000 11:36 pm

A340 flight can be extended to 13000 kilometres. B747-400 can fly few thousands of kilometers smaller distance. But plane can be different modifications (with large fuel tanks, etc.). Extra-longhaul B777 modification can fly a route of 13500 kilometres (it more than A340). I know information about many major commercial jets, and B777 distance, which it can fly is longest. {you can test it than buy B747, A340 and B777  }

A top 10 for sure is TPE-JFK at 7788 miles.

By the way, the SFO-HKG is only 6915 miles - got that from Singapore airlines. Just FYI!

Atlanta-JNB would be the longest nonstop, if it exists. Has it started? And is there a TPE-JFK nonstop?

Jeez. No matter what class you're in, you'd think there would be a point where passengers would WELCOME a stop! I'll bet the airlines wouldn't, though.

Hey Timz,

Just getting back to you regarding TPE-JFK, China Airlines Flight 12 leaves TPE at 6pm and arrives JFK 7:30 pm. Travel time is 14:30, non stop 747-400 service.

Regarding the class of service comment, LHMark, I have flown BA business class from Vancouver to London a couple of times now and I must say, the time flies by. Economy has been a different story, mind you, but the business class on BA has to be one of the best in the sky. The seats are completely separate from each other and they almost do a full recline. Very comfortable and the service is great!

It is MIA-JNB until it is discontinued shortly and replaced with ATL-JNB both are flown with 747-400 by SAA they are only non-stop on the eastbound legs. The westbound legs make a technical stop for fuel. After that are several contenders including JFK-HKG flown with a 747-400 by Cathay Pacific normally non stop in both directions but occasionally has to make a technical stop westbound when it encounters stonger than normal headwinds due to the jetstream.

Other noticiables include SYD-LAX and the occasionally scheduled (seasonal variation SYD-ORD) all flown with 747-400... HKG-YYZ flown by AC and CX with A340...

Hope this helps...

SAA Stop-over

Fri Jan 28, 2000 4:16 am

Hello,

Can somebody tell me precisely where do they stop while bound for NYC ?

Was it the same airport UAL would have used if they had flown to Johannesburg with a 767 in the early 1990's ?

What's the precise type of the 744 SAA operating the route ? I know they are RR.

I think the SAA stops at ATL (formerly MIA) JFK, doesn't it ?

Best regards,
Alain Mengus

The JFK and MIA (MIA soon to be ATL) are seperate flight. SAA I believe uses the 747-400 with RR engines (I will have to verify as I am not sure.) The technical stop westbound occurs in the Seychelles. Except, I just went to verify it on Travelocity and it now shows nonstop both directions on both Miami and JFK flights... Go figure...

You Are Correct! Sorry

Fri Jan 28, 2000 6:05 am

You are correct.. Cape Verde Islands.. That is where they used to stop..

Also one other correction...

Flight routing is...

MIA-CPT-JNB (long leg is MIA-CPT at around 7600 miles I think)

JFK-CPT-JNB

Mia-Cpt-Jnb is also a codeshare with AA

Atl-Cpt-Jnb will be a codeshare with DL

Approved by the FAA/DOT last week to start in this quarter.

CX Flights

The CX flights between HKG and JFK stops in YVR in both directions all year.
The flights between HKG and YYZ stops at ANC depending on weather condition.

This is great stuff. I\\\'ve done a lot of the long hauls b/t Asia and the East coast, all in b-class but still too long for my taste.

I think its interesting to see that the 744 still commands the greatest distances. I clearly remember the introduction of the 340 and the prees flight b/t LHR and SYD to demonstrate the record-breaking range of the 340. What happened? Why aren\\\'t these cities and/or others connected on a regular non-stop schedule? I didn\\\'t read a single post showing a 340 non-stop flight longer than a 744.

That\\\'s some piece of 30 year old airframe design coupled to 20 year old engine designs. Go figure.

The absolute longest at the moment is JFK-JNB. Soon it will be ATL-JNB. Both flown by South African. The MIA-CPT was flown non-stop both directions all year long. I have flown this route before. The new service from ATL will be non-stop eastbound but will route via Ft Lauderdale westbound. This was just recently chosen by SAA over Cape Verdes. The JFK-HKG is not flown by CX. They did fly it as a test but need more navigational equip. on board before they can make the service routinely.

YYZ-HKG is not non-stop (on either Air Canada or CX). Makes a technical stop in Anchorage. JFK-TPE makes a stop in Anchorage as well, but maybe they changed it, I dunno.

Another long haul that no one has mentioned is BUE-AKL flown by Aerolineas Argentinas. The flight is non-stop in both directions and operated w/ an A340. This used to be operated w/ a B747 and made a technical stop in Rio Gallegos on the way to Auckland. With the A340 they can fly non-stop to/from Auckland. The routing is over the South Pole approx. Very interesting!!!!!

Longest flight I can remember going on was SVO-JFK-LAX. 20 Hours air time, 10 min ground time the plane never parked at the terminal at JFK, We never got off the plane. Just refueled. We were traveling as SA's (space avalible) and unexpectedly were up graded to First class. 20 hours on a plane is bad no matter where you are - but its a little better when you're in first
Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to returning to SVO on another 20 HOUR flight on a 767-300ER!

Don't forget, though, Aerolineas Argentinas used a 747-200.

Qantas, in cooperation with Aerolineas Argentinas, also fly the BUE-AKL route, but they use their 747-400 "Longreach" aircraft.

The nonstop MIA-CPT is still operating and JFK-HKG is non stop 6 monthes of the year. The route was run for half of 1999 as a nonstop. And YVR was dropped to A340 service.

Gentelmen,

The longest NON STOP commercial flight is from ORD to HKG operated by United Airlines. This is 16+ hrs flight!!!
NON-STOP, United has only one special B747-400 with extra fuel tanks.
