Biman Fleet Upgrade Plans

Fri Mar 12, 2004 2:16 am

Just came to know that BG is planning to take in a couple of F28s into their fleet besides evaluating a B742 ex KU. The B733s are returning to the lessor in APR and the airline also appears to be looking for a DC10 replacement - all this actually from the press and other channels. Can any of our Bangladesh experts comment on the real situation?

Now why would they even think of putting in an old B 742 !!! Another stupid decision on their part!!!

What they need is simple...DC 10s replaced by B 772ERs or A 343s!!!

Behramjee: I agree that there can be nothing more glamorous than a 772ER or an A343!

But those are pretty expensive machines and hardly suitable for an airline like BG at this stage! Rather than add yet another type which adds to the operational complexities, it makes sense to build on a common fleet.

BG can probably acquire 6 or 7 F28's in place of 3 737-300's, and while not the most efficient aircraft out there, the F28 seems to fit nicely into BG's network.

The 742 also makes sense in that it is a cheap way to augment capacity up from their DC10's. Airlines should look not for most glamorous options but for the most cost effective solutions.

I think what BG now needs to do is rationalise their route structure. If this means tying up with (say) KLM or LH and cutting out the transatlantic hops then so be it. THey should consider an arrangement wherein they have more non-stops from DAC and CGP to a European hub, where pax can connect onto flights operated by the partner airline.

Ridiculous flying bus flights (DAC-CGP-DXB-BRU-JFK??? Brrrr!) must be replaced with more convenient routings.

BIMAN has released many official statements in the last 5-6 months which even the DAC govt supported saying that they are getting rid off their ENTIRE FLEET and replacing them with new or used planes via purchase and not lease deals.

So this ex KU B 742 deal is highly unlikely to happen...and in anycase I hope it doesnt...it will be a waste of money!!!
