Day Trip To ATL

Fri Mar 12, 2004 2:53 am

Hi. I am considering taking a day trip to ATL right after final exams are done with. I am primarily planning on spending the day shooting pictures of the flights to/from and as many pics I can get of ATL and the traffic there. I was wondering first of all, what is my best bet (cheapest) for getting to ATL. I'd fly out of MCO and I want to leave around 7-9am and return 6-9 pm. I'd perfer Delta but any airline is ok. The hypothetical date is May 27.
Second of all, do you all have any suggestions for things to do in ATL or the best places to take pictures from. I don't plan on leaving the airport and just staying within terminal T, A, B, C, D, and E.
Finally, what should I be on the lookout for (ex: Air France A340 at 3pm in concourse E). I'd like to get some shots of planes that either don't normally come to MCO or anything exotic. All suggestions or comments are welcomed. Thanks!

The only direct flight you would get from MCO-ATL would be either on FL or DL (maybe Song now that I think of it). Not sure but most likely FL will be cheaper than DL. Keep in mind that May 27th is the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend.

I took a day trip down to ATL about a year and a half ago. I think the terminals are very condusive to taking pictures of the planes as they travel between the terminals. One thing is that some terminals don't have windows on the end to get a clear view of planes landing and taking off.

If i am not mistaken in T and A are where Delta flts come in from major markets(SLC, SFO, HNL, MCO, TPA) with widebodies. I remember seeing like 5 764's parked in this area when i was there.

Also there's a Chili's too Restuarant in the middle of Terminal A on the upper level. You can get some good photos just looking somewhat down on the taxiway and the adjacent terminal(B). If you dont want to eat there, there is a little spot just before the restaurant where you can look out.

Just a note....the terminals are VERY long. I must have walked each terminal back and forth twice throughout the day and walked at least 5 miles just through the terminals.

As for getting some good planes...i guess it's the luck of the draw. When i went i had a great spotting day. I saw:
Delta 777 SLC Olympics
Delta 752 SLC Olympics
Delta 762 NC Spirit
South African 744
Korean 744
Delta Connection CRJ Olympics
Delta Shuttle 738
Delta MD-11 (in NC, IC, and OC)
World DC-10

But be ready for mainly Delta planes....that's pretty much all you'll see

Thanks. I've been to ATL quite a few times while connecting and believe me, I'm very well aware of how long those terminals are. They seemed like they were never gonna end when I was rushin to my next flight at the end of the concourse.
I'm lookin forward to getting some good shots. I don't think that the Delta 777 and 757 SLC Olympics exist anymore though. The 757 went to song and I just flew on the 777 not long ago in normal NEW colors. Also I don't plan on seein any MD-11s of Delta seeing how they were all retired as of 01/02. But anyway... thanks again for all your help.

Any other suggestions or comments are still welcomed. Thanks!

You'd get more variety at MIA! Just buy a ticket on chicuauquguaqua (DL connection  Big thumbs up), probably won't even cost much. Plus in MIA, they have holes in the fence to take photos.

I don't know if AM only flies its MD-8x's to ATL or if it is sending one 73W that way too. Hopefully you can snap one of those. I think the 737NG airplanes with blended winglets have never looked better than with AM colors.
Upcoming AM MEX-LAX 73H, VA LAX-MEL 77W.

From Terminal E you will see the following

South African A340-600 arriving at about 9:00AM - a must see, but unfortunately not much longer as SAA is probably pulling out of ATL once they join the Star Alliance. Probably moving to MIA.

The rest are:

JM A310, A320 - morning around 8:00AM and then again in the evening around 8:00PM
DL 777 - afternoon starting around 2:00PM
DL 767-400 - Terminal A and B (morning and early afternoon)
AF A330, 777 - afternoon starting around 2:00PM
LH A340 - afternoon starting around 2:00PM
BA 777 - afternoon starting around 2:00PM
Korean 777 - morning around 10:00AM
AeroMexico MD 80 - a couple times a day

Perhaps a World MD-11 or DC-10 occasionally.

You will also see DL MD-11 (ship 809) sitting on the maintenance dock missing an engine. She's bound for Victorville I believe.

Perhaps if you are lucky, you will also see a 747 Cargo...but this is somewhat rare. You really are better off going to MIA if you want to see a diversity of heavies.
