Employees Remove Bags Quickly From Carousel

Fri Mar 12, 2004 4:54 am

Today I was waiting around the baggage claim at CLE and saw this CO employee working at CO's baggage carousel.

Every time a flight came in and the bags started to come through the carousel he would pick them off the carousel and set them on the ground.

And when the pax finally got to the carousel all their bags were laying on the ground.

Has anyone noticed this before? Do they do this so pax won't have to wait a long time in baggage claim?

We do it ALL the time in COS with UAL. You cant leave the bag belt unattended and most of the time you need to hurry back plane side or do another task, and there belt needs to be turned off.

Sometimes the belt will rotate 50 times and the same people stare at all the bags, complain where is my bag? And once on the floor(not moving) they notice them.

There are several reasons for doing this. Some reasons are:
1. Reduced congestion around the carousel
2. The need to use the carousel for multiple flights at the same time
3. Pax convience

I know for a fact that people have complained about carousels being too crowded and being pushed around by other pax, not getting help for getting their heavy bags off the carousel, etc.

Are we forgetting something? The airlines are fined if bags are left on the carousel for an extended period.

They used to do this at LAS too. It's like that airline episode where they had this woman who complained about her missing bag and it was at the carousel. i think it's convenient and nice to sit them up together but sometimes it can be a pain in the butt for some people.

Well, I doubt this was the case at CLE, but I know that sometimes airline employees have to go the the belt and pull a bag off if it was "misdirected" on a wrong flight and sent to the carousel before they realized that it shouldn't have been on the plane.

The above does not pertain to all airports, SAN for instance is automated in T-2 and will shut off a few minutes after the last bag goes up it.

The bags have to be taken to the office eventually so some agents remove the bags as they come up. I would not remove the bags until after the last bag went up and the people have left. It was bad enough clearing bags of passengers who did not claim them so there was no way I am going to remove the entire boat load of bags.

AIRWORTHY, if you are not working in the industry, you are wasting your talent. 'Cuz as a passenger, I don't give a hoot why the agent picks it up from the belt. I get my bag, I am happy.
