HC-130P Refueling Helicopters?

Fri Jan 28, 2000 1:54 am

Hi all,

I was doing little research for girl from this forum Rgmayer. She asked for info about Lockheed production between 1965 and 1985.
When I got to Lockheed C-130 I found that they made so many different versions (around 50). The most interesting version was
HC-130P this is better version of flying tanker HC-130H, able to refuel helicopters during a flight. I found info on this aircraft in two different books. How this is possible that C-130 can refuel helicopters????? I never heard about anything like that. Does anyone have pics of it?????

I don't have pictures of it but I have the report of my father and brother. They were in Norfolk, VA at the Navy fleet Headquarters. They say a HC-130 fueling a helicopter, the copter and the Hc-130 Matched speeds and fueled, it was actually uneventful. The c-130 has a low enough stall speed to perform the operation.

The USAF has been using the HC-130 for air-to-air refuelling of helicopters for over thirty years. During the Viet Nam era the H-3 Jolly Green and H-53 Super Jolly Green helicopters employed this technique, and today the HH-60 has the capability. In fact, the structure of USAF,ANG and AFRC Rescue units is based on utilization of both HC-130s and helicopters. Hope this helps.
