When Is USAirways Going To Start Flying The A330?

Fri Jan 28, 2000 5:16 am

I keep reading about US Airways taking delivery of some Airbus A330 aircraft.

My questions are when are they going to start flying them if they haven't already and where are they going to be flying them to? I assume they will be for their international destinations from PHL, PIT, and CLT?

Will they be replacing the 767 they currently use on their transatlantic routes?

Deliveries will start about the end of March. Actual entry into revenue service is slated for the end of May, I believe the 29th, on the PHL-LGW run. That is the plan so far. But you know how plans change quickly, in this business. The A330 will be doing proving runs across the system during April and probably part of May.

Thanks John, Thanks Mike. Maybe they'll do a promotional tour here like Delta did with the 777 last year.

Hey John, question for you, why did US Airways stop flying to Frankfurt from Boston? It couldn't be the competition as Lufthansa is the only other carrier I know off the top of my head that flies nonstop from Boston.

I've read about US Airways trying to get European destinations from Boston, any luck there?

Thanks again!

The BOS-FRA run never made money, so they say. When the flight operated CLT-FRA nonstop it was full all year round, go figure. Then they tagged on BOS, big mistake. I really don't think the flight was all that unprofitable, I just think we had priorities for the equipment. We only have 12 767's. We were reinstating LGW service and adding CDG frequency at the time, that took preference. We are adding PHL-MAN, I believe in June, and reinstating CLT-FRA nonstop, finally. These cities are seriously being considered, Zurich, Milan. We've been wanting Milan for a long time. Major political battle, there. Hope this clears things up for you.

Thanks John! You certainly did explain things!

I can't fathom that US Airways thought it wasn't making money on that route. During the summer months Lufthansa flies two daily nonstops between BOS and FRA, a 747-200 and an A340, I've heard both flights are always booked solid!

I know there is more than enough people in both Boston and Frankfurt who can fill a couple of jumbo jets on a daily basis!

Boston isn't a huge hub for US Airways. Sure, there are lots of US Airways Express flights in and out of there, but do they feed in enough people to fill a 767?

John, is it true that US Airways has 11 transatlantic flights daily each way and 12 767s to run them? That gives you one hot spare. Is that enough?

The reason that the Frankfurt flight was switched to Philly is that that is *the* international hub for US. Boston is an excellent O/D market for US, but the feed into international just wasn't set up right yet. Evenso, whenever I flew out of Logan during the early afternoon, the Frankfurt check-in crew was always quite busy with the load.

The Lufthansa flight gets excellent loads because it gets feed from its partners United which has many transcons there, and Air Canada which of course gives them connections to Montreal, Toronto and others. I've taken this flight on the 340. Nice (but slow). Great service though. I got 7 glasses of orange juice!!

Anyways, back to the topic, I think when US adds transcon service from BOS, it will see international service again, especially since it is such a big financial market. BOS-FRA especially, just makes sense.

I\\\'ve also heard late March/early April! My guess is that they will fly them to/from PHL only...slight chance of CLT, too!?!?!?!?

Has anyone seen an A330 in USAir colors yet? I had the chance to fly one with AerLingus to SHN last month and I\\\'ve been facinated with the aircraft ever since.

Rapo, I flew the \\\"Shamrock Heavy\\\" last May when my wife and I flew to Ireland for our honyemoon. We took the 200 version, \\\"St. Mella\\\", over to SNN and took one of their 300 versions, \\\"St. Colmcille\\\", back to the States.
Both aircraft are featured in the picture section of this great web site!

I agree, Airbus did it\\\'s homework with this aircraft and it is one of my favorites! We have a new A330 visitor at Logan International, Swissair flies them now. They replaced the 747-300 that used to fly to Boston. In addition Sabena flies the A330 once in awhile but normally they fly the A340 between Boston and Brussels.
