SQ A340-500 LeaderShip: How Is It?

Sat Mar 13, 2004 3:31 am

Hello everyone, I just wanted to know how SQ is doing with their LeaderShip service and how passengers are responding to such a long flight, cabin comfort, service (excellent, I presume since it is SQ!), and overall convenience of a LAX-SIN nonstop flight. Has the A345 performed as expected for SQ?

Has anyone posted a trip report on SQ LeaderShip? I searched the trip reports section but have had no luck. I am tempted to buy a ticket and travel to SIN and back just to experience it and write a report! Once again my wife thinks I need to seek professional help!

I cannot wait for SIN-JFK service to begin. Will Cathay Pacific match this long nonstop service (JFK-HKG)? It would sure be convenient for US east coast passengers like myself to get to SE Asia.

Thanks for all your responses.

Cathay has already announced nonstop service JFK-HKG.

I cannot wait for SIN-JFK service to begin.

Considering that no airline has current intentions of operating that route, your wait might be a long one  Big grin

You're a bit of an ass, as usual.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Of course, they are planning SIN-EWR (for whatever reason) but the effect is the same.

Oh yeah, my fault. I meant EWR-SIN with SQ's A345. Thanks for pointing that out.

for whatever reason

Reasons are simple...
their yield on FRA-JFK was considerably higher than AMS-EWR, and the problem of EWR's shorter runway was addressed with a late evening departure.

their yield on FRA-JFK was considerably higher than AMS-EWR

Wouldn't that lead one to believe that a nonstop SIN-JFK would have a much higher yield than a SIN-EWR?

In a sense yes...

But apparently they'd rather ditch a lower yielding run with multiple competitiors, for a competition-free nonstop, while maintaining the competitive higher-yielding run ex-Kennedy.

If I were a businessman (whom SQ are targetting for these ultra super duper longhaul flights) I would rather leave at night after a hard day's work during the week.

So I would rather leave SIN at 2355 on Friday night and arrive in JFK at 10am on Saturday on the one stop flight, rather than leave SIN at noon on Saturday and arrive in EWR at 6.30pm the same day, right?

Also, the JFK-FRA-SIN flight leaves JFK at 9.30pm and arrives in SIN at around 7am the next day. The EWR-SIN direct flight leaves EWR at around 11pm and arrives at 5.50am the next morning. (To a businessman it makes no difference between arriving at 5am or 7am....)

Thus, from a practical point of view, there is hardly any difference between the timings of the non-stop flight and the one-stop flight, except that you don't have to get off at FRA for the direct flight.

As such, I'm wondering how the EWR-SIN direct flights will work out for SQ.

I still wonder how 181 passengers paying 5% more than normal can give SQ profit on an 18 hour flight. Im sure the FAs must either have higher pay or they must hire more FAs for the diff shifts, and how many pilots are there on one flight?? The numbers just don't make sense.
Now you're really flying

More than half the airplane is configured for business class, 64 seats to be exact. It's a pretty large business class cabin by any measure and that's where the bulk of the profit comes from. Load factors have been pretty good, overall about 70%-80% and most of the time it is almost full up front. There is also a limited freight capacity on the LAX runs, which may not be the case for the EWR sectors given the length of flight time.
