Spotting In USA After 3/11!

Sat Mar 13, 2004 11:33 pm

Hi!

I wanted to have the feedback from our US enthusiasts about the topic above mentioned. I have a friend that will be visiting USA soon to see some airports there, he will fly NW and will go to MSP and MIA. Now after the bombs at Madrid is USA raising their level of security and is it still safe to spot airplanes now there?
Please let me know your feedback!
regards

I think he's asking if the March 11 attacks on the RENFE are going to influence USA security protocol. The short answer, as of right now, is no.

For the most part, the only areas of transportation that are seing any increases in security as a result of the attacks in Spain are railroads and subways.

Since there has been no "chatter", the level of terror threat has not been raised... yet!

Mlsrar - no, he means 3/11, referring to the terrorist activity in Madrid this week.

Assuming that the Dept of Homeland Security hasn't raised the terror alert level since Thursday, I'd imagine that things haven't changed much. Although, I'm sure that law enforcement/the powers that be are being a bit more cautious without making it all to known to the public.

For the last couple of years, it's always been a pain in the a$$ at most U.S. airports and train stations to "loiter" or "spot".

Strange how it has been 911 days between the two attacks.

Hey

i am in Madrid now. I was here during the bombings. I doubt that the US will tighten security. I mean in Madrid they still havent raised security that much. I am flying out tommrow and will see if the Security is tighter at MAD and or JFK and AMS.

The train stations and yards may be a little higher.

Security at train stations is a joke. I rode on the D.C. subways every day last week and remember thinking how easy it would be for someone to set off a bomb..

B741, I didn't know that!!  Wow! Also exactly 2.5 years since 9/11. I have an awful feeling that maybe it wasn't coincidence......
By the way, I believe that these attacks were carried out by Al Qaida and not ETA.

There is a slight chance that they will raise the level from yellow (guarded) to Orange (high). Just to go any USA airport web site see. They have the color code system up there.

Also, Airports in my opinion always operate under code Orange eventhough the nations level is yellow.

Yellow is 'Elevated'; Blue is 'Guarded'

I agree, it would be incredibly easy.

I know in Miami they did remove all trash cans from MetroRail stations so that bomb's could not be hidden. I think DC did the same thing.

Isn't London's Tube "bomb-proof" because of the removal of trash bins and other measures (because of the IRA threat)?

Anyways I still don't understand how hard it could possibly be to shoot an airliner down. While I don't know the range of Stinger missles, it seems like it would be so easy to shoot one down on approach. It bothers me as a photographer that security is so damn tight on the perimeter fence but there is nothing (at least visibly) guarding the approach paths, etc.

Yeah good point. The ETA attacks in the past have always been centered around political targets, and when they make a mistake as they did a few years ago when they accidentally killed 19(??) people they quickly apologized.

War is a very poor political tool

Not to be picky, but by my calculation, there were 912 days between the two attacks. Did you take into account the leap year?

Still, 2 and a half years to the day is a bit strange... I wonder if it's a coincidence or if they intended for it to be symbolic.

Anyway, I wouldn't think that this event would affect security in the U.S., although it wouldn't surprise me that much if it did...
