Delta's MD-90 Fleet?

Mon Mar 15, 2004 5:39 am

Hi all,

Just curious if Delta plans to hang on to their MD-90 fleet for a while yet. Reason being is that I'd like to fly on one eventually, and if they plan on getting rid of them I better do that sooner rather than later.

I've heard of some technical problems they've been having with the engines on their MD-90 fleet. Is this true? That coupled with the small size of the fleet, and the continuing growth of the 738 fleet make me wonder just how much longer the MD-90 will be around in Delta's fleet.

The MD-90 is certainly far more of an airplane, to me, than the 738. I wouldn't want to miss a chance to fly on one before they are gone. Does delta plan to hang onto them? Could use your input, thanks.

Unfortunately, the MD-90 is much less of an aircraft.

I like it too... I wish it had worked out better.

I'll second you on that Aloha, I'll take an MD-90 over a 738 anyday. I hope they hold onto them, they do serve the little niche at SLC nicely. If chapter 11 comes around, I bet they'll be on the chopping block.  Crying

Those poor planes :-(

It is definitely one of my favorite A/C. I had the pleasure of flying on one about 2 weeks ago SAN - SLC. It was a MESS. The paint was so worn off there was almost nothing left. There were broken seats and broken window shades inside.

The lack of maintenance made me wonder how much longer they would be around also.

I love the MD-90's. They came into Billings until January. When looking straight down it, those big engines make it look sort of like mickey mouse.  Smile

I had the opportunity to fly on one in June 2000 with AA. It was a lovely aircraft. I was supposed to have flown on N7522A, but I flew on N901RA instead. ??? The engine started up very quietly, and it was quiet throughout the whole flight. I wish they would have used those engines for the 717. But I like the BR715 too.

Interesting...Delta has reserved the MD-90s for being among the last to receive the Deltaflot livery...most remain in the widgets. I wonder if this is because Delta is in fact planning to get rid of them?

The MD-90s are currently being painted. I think the fleet is more than half done. I think they were the last to be repainted because they were some of the newest Widget schemes. I doubt they wil be leaving soon.

The MD-90 is fuel-efficient and quiet...I don't see why DL would get rid of them so soon.
