If Eastern And Pan Am Were Still Around...

Mon Mar 15, 2004 6:48 am

If any of these legendary carriers were still to be flying today, what would they be like? What sort of fleet? What routes? And how would the rest of the airline industry be changed: ex: AA would not be big in Latin America.

All insight to this intriguing question is appreciated!

Mine:

Pan Am: would have A320s (replacing 727s), A300s, A310s, B777s (replacing L1011s and DC-10s), and 744s (replacing 741s)

Eastern: 737-600, -700, and -800 for the DC-9s and 727s, 757-200 and -300, 767-300 and 400 to replace A300s, and 777s to replace L1011s

Go at it!!!
The opinions expressed here are mine and not necessarily those of Delta Air Lines.

A fleet scenario for Pan Am.....
744s would have been the only Boeing left. The rest would been A300s, A320s, A330s & A340s. The only reason the 747 is staying because it would have been a matter of pride for PA. The Airbus fleet is simply because they're cheap.
Fleet scenario for Eastern.....
A300s & A330s, MD-80s/717s, 757s & 777s. No trijets nor quads for EA. Eastern was always a big Douglas & Lockheed customer. And EA was the first US-based carrier to operate an Airbus with an "N" registration.
All my opinion only. Regards.

Hey FlagshipAZ whats up! Back in NY freezing my butt off  Angry

I think eastern would have a few 737s mixed in there maybe. Would have been nice to see that airline survive.

If PanAm was still around I would still be employed with them!

American would not have south-america

United would be a small domestic airline as they would not have any Pacific flying or much Atlantic

AirTran would have never happend as Eastern would be neck and neck with Delta

Gosh wouldnt that be a great place! I miss PA!

Depends whether EA or PA were in good shape or bad shape!

EA in good shape: 772, A300-600, 753, 752, M88, 733.
EA in bad shape: A300B4, 752, 722, DC-9-50.

PA in good shape: 343, 332, 312/313, 320.
PA in bad shape: 742, A300, 312/313, 320, 722.

Hats off to all you former Pan Am and Eastern people. I, personally, enjoy seeing the former Pan Am people. They're always a joy to have inflight.

PanAm would have kept the A300s, A310s, and would have eventually opt. for some A320's, and A340's in the early 90s, and A330s come the Mid 90s. I'm not sure what routes they would have had if they were still around, considering soo much was gobbled up by other carriers. I would have expected them to keep a dominant role at JFK, and smaller hubs at Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Eastern would have 757s, 737s (most likely the 300's and 500's as it has been rumored that they would have opt. for some) 717's and for the L-1011 replacements the 764's. I would have expected Eastern to Keep Atlanta, which would have ruined the chances of AirTran to come about. Newark would have been interesting because of Continental's strong existance there. So my guess at EWR is that Eastern would have come into Terminal C. At miami, Eastern would have bellied-up there cuz AA came in in 1989, and was strong. Eastern could have been severely weakened there, or have come out strong.
Its hard to predict this stuff.

I think PA would have more Airbuses than before, maybe some 330's to replace their aging 300's.... and some 320's to replace all their 727's.... but 744's for longhaul as they were the original launch customer for it....

BTW where do most of the former PA cabin crew fly for now?? DL? UA? I have such great memories of flying with PA all over the world on their 707's and 747's.

You call it the world, we call it home. Pan Am.

Hey NIKV69....glad you're home safe & sound. Guess what? Spring has sprung in the tristate here. We hit 86 yesterday, and probably hit 89 today. Winds are down quite a bit, and everyone is already complaining about allergies.  Wink/being sarcastic On the side here, nothing to report on IFP, but HII is getting Arizona Express soon starting service to PHX, continues to Showlow, and perhaps LAS & LAX in the near future. HII city council stopped subsidizing America West Express (aka Mesa?). Stay in touch, Nick. Best regards.

If Eastern and Pan Am were still around, the world would be different. Big grin

Pan Am would really affect the world's state, I think. UA, DL, and AA and CO and NW would all have a lot more competition. If TWA were still around, and in its golden days in the early 1970s along with Pan Am, we would see the world much differently. Eastern not-so-much. They were a classic American airline, but were not much competition to anyone pretty much upon the start of the jet-age and especially when they ordered the L-1011. They got nothing accomplished internationally, and began to lose ground on the domestic front. But I would love to see them back all the same, as well as Braniff and National.

PA actually had 320's on order prior to its demise.

EA's order for A300's included 26 options for the A310.

Isnt PanAm's name still around but flying a LCC with A320s somewhere back east? I thought I saw some pics somewhere that showed that PanAm was 're-born'. Can someone elaborate for me?

I am from an Eastern family but I loved Pan Am. If they were around today they would have quite an impact on the international market, I loved their 747s! I truly wish both of these carriers could have survived I think they were both huge in the industry!

FlagshipAZ,

I saw the weather in Laughlin! Enjoy it! Have you made your maiden voyage to the IN and OUT? Those burgers RULE! I miss IFP!! I was going through all my pics and just loved the ones I took there. Keep me posted on the runway expansion, just think when it's done they can have 747s land there!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy hehehe. I wish Sun Country would expand there. Who knows in five years that airport can be all new! Will be back this winter! First round is on me!
