Which Cities Are At Least More Than 2 Stops Away?

Mon Mar 15, 2004 4:45 pm

I was thinking now with the age of the long range aircraft which cities are still more than 2 stops to get to from your airport on any airline. Or even are there any airports left like this. BTW I don't mean the type of airport that only attracts 1 B1900D a day.

I haven't thought of too many places from AKL so far, but if anyone else can start the ball rolling....

Almost everywhere between South America and South East Asia are 2 stops plus.

Fortunately Salina,KS SLN gets I believe 4 B1900's a day so this fits~!

KANSAS City-Manhattan-Salina. MCI-MHK-SLN No direct service to anywhere but Manhattan which is about a 45 minute car ride, all via interstate. 50 nm trip.

Also is anyone flying ORD-SYD nonstop? I remember an Qantas ORD-LAX-SYD trip (flew it in 1999) haven't seen anything lately.

I'd say most of the USA to the Middle East and Africa. Especially those cities not on the east coast.

Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Denver, Seattle to Cape Town, and Dubai, etc.

Any city in the US without international flights is at least two stops from any European city also without international flights. There must be thousands of cases around the world...

Good question. Theoretically long range planes can link one side of the world to the other with only one stop. Hey, and Airbus A340 even flew Paris-Auckand-Paris, that's right around the world with one stop.

Airline schedules, customer demand and limited airport runway lenght mean that two stops plus are the norm for most journeys, eg Wellington (New Zealand) to Edinburgh (Scotland)

Spike has a good point, but it is possible to fly between major cities in South America and Asia with one stop eg Sao Paulo-London-Singapore or Buenos Aires-Frankfurt-Tokyo. I know Malaysia Airline fly the same plane Kuala Lumpur-Johanesburg-Cape Town-Buenos Aires. The extra stop in South Africa is to link the large Malay community in Cape Town rather than any restrictions on aircraft range.

Not true. LAX, SEA, DEN to Middle East capitals are all one stop in LHR (or FRA, CDG...)

To the posts before this one. No one flies Chicago-Sydney non stop. It's beyond the range capabilities of all planes flying today. The A340-500/777-200 LR will just be able to do Sydney-Dallas.

For international airports in the USA most places are one stop even the west coast ones, again via Europe. Eg LAX-London-Cape Town.

I've travel industry experience and New Zealanders are about the most regular round-world fliers. We get to learn the quickest way between two points on the globe.

From Australias perspective there are a few city pairs (using capital cities of at least 1million+ inhabitants) that would be two stops.

ADL/PER to US cities other than LAX/SFO.
ADL to South America. All cities other than SCL / BUE
All Captial cities to Many European desitinations esp Eastern European destinations.

I hope that helps although there would be plenty more to choose from.

I believe the title was "more than 2 stop away", it's fairly easy to find city that are only two stops, meaning: origin-stop1-stop2-destination.

Can anybody think of three plus stop versions (seeing that's the name of the title and all)? Those are far more difficult to find, 2 stops are easy. Also, keeping the same concept of "somewhat decently sized cities".

Yes, mymiles2go is correct, I realise my title is slightly ambiguous but that is what I was meaning.
every time I think I have one it isn't cos i think of another way to get there...I think maybe a further restriction of being able to earn fflyer points for the entire route on one program might bring up a few more options, cos we seem to be scraping the barrel. But interesting that most of the world is within 2 stops regardless of airport size nonetheless.

Palikir - the capital of Federated States of Micronesia is 2 stops away from Japan & China, and 3 stops away to Los Angeles via Guam & Japan (or 4 stops away via Honolulu).

This is probably the only national capital without a non-stop service to a neighbouring country. Can you think of others?

I can't think of an airservice from Nuuk (capital of Greenland) to either Iceland or Canada (The 2 neighbourghs!)

Well... Greenland is not a sovereign state because it's under Danish administration. I think I have to answer my own question - Canberra!!!

So maybe I should change the question to : The largest city instead of the national capital. Then somebody might come up with Brasilia.
