Light Aircraft Lands On A Pickup Truck!

Mon Mar 15, 2004 5:49 pm

For those of you in the UK who read the Metro, this was in this mornings paper:

"A truck driver got the shock of his life when a light aircraft made an emergency landing on his pick-up. Bob Oglesby thought a bomb had detonated after the plane landed as he drove home to Edgewater in western Florida. Mr Ogleby and pilot Glenn Meleen escaped with bruises"

When I saw 'Student pilot in FL lands on truck,' I thought no further than Embry-Riddle.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

True he was a Riddle student, but he was not in a Riddle airplane. He was towing a banner out of New Smyrna Beach. Those banner towing outfits in the Daytona area tend to set one down about once or twice a year. Their planes are under powered junk.

Since I live in FL (and very near Edgewater), I'd like to point out that this incident - and the town - are both located South of Daytona Beach, on I-95, just north of the Volusia/Brevard County line.

They're not in, "western" Florida.

Just a little correction  Smile

Why should Bob be worried? If the plane's engines still work, maybe he can hit the gas until the truck is going fast enough for the plane to take off!

I just found out about this this morning in ROTC. He is one of our cadet officers and he just got his pilot slot for the air force today. Congratulations to him for not getting hurt and for his new future in the Air Force. The ROTC staff had fun joking around with him this morning. Luckily though no one was seriously hurt in this accident.

I remember reading in Flying a couple of years ago about a Cessna 182 that had to make a forced landing on an interstate due to engine failure. The pilot was increasingly concerned as they got close to the flare because there was a car beneath them that just wouldn't get out of the way (a deadstick Cessna doesn't exactly have a very big margin to change the landing distance). Only at the very last moment did the driver see the plane (through the driver's side window) and speed up.

I think there used to be a stunt pilot who landed on 'the world's smallest runway' with a small plane onto a platform on a truck. I believe he did his show a couple of times at the Sussex County Airport Show in NJ.
