Rumor UA Flying Int'l Out Of PHL?

Tue Mar 16, 2004 10:02 am

I admit it is just a rumor I heard, but has anyone else heard of the possibility of UA flying international out of Philadelphia? I heard they might by some USAirways international routes?

UALPHLCS just speculated that UA could potentially fly PHL-LHR, but said nothing was planned and if it ever does happen it was still at least a year away.

Yeah all of UA's international routes out of PHL are US codeshares. However, I have speculated that UA may like to move an unused LHR slot to PHL ,if PHL becomes the Star hub it has the potential to be. BA is the only carrier to LHR out of PHL UA and AA both have connections and VS you have to drive to NY. UA would do a good job competing with BA's monopoly, and US would love to offer both LGW and LHR to the PHL market.

Admittedly this was before PHL became a WN and F9 city. Now US has to survive before Star will start flying in in any quantity.

Did US get their rights from the flight TWA used to have PHL-LGW? Or is that something that AA still has the option of exercising? Or is it up for grabs? Or is it gone forever?

At this point, US could not place its code on any PHL-LHR offered by UA.

PS, and before anyone says it:
CO code into LHR was a different deal, at a different time, with different reciprocal obligations that UA/US are not likely to match or even be offered.

IIRC if the US/UA merger went through UA would have flown international routes out of PHL...for some reason PHL-YVR and PHL-CPH are the two that spring to mind...

The topic concerns a US-based airline facing a restriction in regards to LHR; hmm, wonder what could be the cause of that...........................  Big grin

I'd also bet on a PHL-LHR route, but ONLY after US gets flushed down the toilet, but not a day before. I'm sure UA is well aware of the US situation and has a contingency plan in place, depending on what happens.

United failed miserably when they tried London-Boston service. Granted, AA and BA have a lot of lift in that market, so I never knew what UA thought they were going to accomplish anyway. But that's their mistake. As for PHL, they might succeed because there are not as many incumbent seats in this market as there are out of Boston. Still, UA will have a tough time attracting business in such a new (and for them, a different) market.

PHL is not a new and different market for them. I also don't think that US goin belly up would help UA international service. No on the contrary currently Star customers who want to connect to the East coast have to travel through FRA on LH to connect to US which is currently the only partner US has overseas. Or they would have to connect through ORD and come back to the east coast.

Once US is a Star partner BMI would bring in feed to US from MAN. But still no feed from the largest Hub in the world. UA could fill that gap. would benefit from Euro traffic from LHR MAN and FRA as well as MAD. Summertime could get awfully busy in PHL.

UALPHLCS: Will you be working the morning of the 27th(Saturday)? If you are, D should be a little chaotic. My high school is chartering an Airtran 717 and American 752 to Orlando. So D should be filled with 150 high school seniors Saturday morning. Maybe i'll say hi if i'm on the Airtran flt, i dont know which flt i'll be on yet.
