The L-1011 And The MD-11, Coincidental Swan Song?

Wed Mar 17, 2004 4:51 am

If memory serves me correctly, didn't DL retire them both within about 12 months?

If I am right, why didn;t they keep the MD-11 around longer?

I mean, it jsut seems that they got so many more years of use by the L-1011. Were they not getting enough bang for their dollar with the MD-11's?

Hey Mario!

I love the MD-11, I don't how much they cost to operate but as far as I am concerned they are more quiet then say a 767 and more comfortable. In fact I was lucky to get upgraded to First Class on a flight from Natal to GRU and it was a dream! I think the DC-10 was a pretty good plane. As for the L-1011 I would have to ask my dad he loved that plane.
Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!

The problem with the MD-11 was it had a higher cost structure than the 777s and 767s in Delta's fleet, and with Delta's financial health rapidly declining and Delta trying to make as many cuts as possible to reduce expenses it was a no-brainer that the MD-11 would have to be retired. The MD-11 has had an unfortunately short life as a passenger carrier but will be around for many years to come as a freighter.
