Where To Catch A Boeing 747 SP?

Wed Mar 17, 2004 11:36 am

I was looking at my list of aircraft NOT flown, that are likely to disappear soon and came up with the 747SP. What is the cheapest way for me to fly on one this summer? I am in London, and can fly to another European airport if necessary - eg
LHR - ATH (BA)
ATH - TEH (IR 747SP)
What do you think?
I should have taken the chance with AA!!!

Thanks in advance.

why fly to ATH? IR flies out of LHR to THR with 747SP. If you dont want to fly so far, you can also use Syrian Air, which uses a 747SP on LHR to Damascus.

HI, David
Yes, the only scheduled carrier now is Syrian Air and Iran Air. Maybe Saudia
I know that SAA still have one flight from JNB to Bangkok until their new Airbus gets delivered anyday now.
Hope you will enjoy the flight on the 747SP but I do not believe that they will climb above 43,000ft on this short flights.

Syrian Air still flies 747SP, was last month several times at AMS. Some new airline in South Africa flies with an old SAA 747SP to IAH (or is planning it!).

To catch an SP, you'll need a very large and very strong butterfly net. Good luck to you Big grin

Iran Air also flies from HAM, but the problem ist they're swichtinge equipment sometimes from SP to A300/A310 or other way arround. This might be the same problem from all other destinations they serve in Europe...

You also need to think about the impact of a Syrian or Iranian stamp in your passport. It may hinder your travel plans in the future!

Don't think any Japanese companies operated the SP. The Chinese and Koreans did though.

Waiting to be corrected though.

Trident - I've got both a Syrian and Iranian stamp in my passport, and never had a problem. It'll only be a real problem if you're contemplating visting Israel before your passport expires.

You definitely have to go to LHR, not only will you catch the Iran Air and the Syrian Air flights, but there is a strong chance you'll get one of the fleet of VIP's SP's from various Md-East countries.

The other thing, of course, is to go to Teheran or Damascus. I heard Teheran's atmosphere is not that nice, but Damascus is a beautiful city and you'll be pleasantly surprised. That way, you'll even fly on the SP.

I flew on the SP countless times. If you want, I can tell you what it feels like, just ask  Smile

AR385, I heard that Tehran is a friendly place. I've been to Damascus and I don't know where you got the idea it's a beautiful city - it's a shithole, although the souk is groovy and the grand mosque is really stunning. But if you're planning a 747SP-themed trip with something to look forward to after the end of the plane ride, expect to get a taxi from Damascus straight to Beirut. Or give Tehran a whirl. Damascus is dirty concrete and salesbeggars in all directions.

Cedarjet,

Well, we obviously have different opinions about the places. I found Damascus to be pleasant, with cafes and people mingling in the evening, nice bazaars, etc., in general a nice, friendly place. Teheran I found totally oppresive. But, it's really a personal thing, so I guess no point in starting a debate. We just have a different opinions.

The only potential problem with Iran is that, for a Briton, it can be very slow and hard to obtain a tourist visa. Ensure you enquire well before (read: many months) your departure date to give yourself a better chance of obtaining one. With effort and commitment you should get one.

Trident2e, What does that mean? Why do you think having an Iranian stamp might cause future problems? It just shows you poor insight about this.

Anyway, BCALdavid, If you are planning to have trip to Iran by an Iran Air 747SP, you are more than welcome!!

Pouyazad,

I emphatize with you and understand why you are offended by Pe@rson comment.

However, the fact remains though, that these days with Blair and Bush, an earlier, Aznar, an Iranian stamp in your passports will guarantee at least, a second look from immigration. It's happening to me. I can't go to the US or London without the immigration zombies asking questions about that trip to Teheran. It's different in France. Now as to long-term consequences, that is a bit going over the top.

Pouyazad. I'm sorry if this offends you, but an Iranian stamp might hinder your travels, for example to Israel. This is the reason some countries offer to stamp a separate paper.

Excuse me? What did I say which was offending? If you look, I did in fact say essentially what he did, with the addition of a bit about Israel.

I said "WHY YOU ARE OFFENDED" I did not say your comment was offensive. In any case it's not important to the discussion at hand. Try and be less sensistive.

For what its worth, I don't think Pe@rson's post was offensive - it was just fact.

LOL. I'm not being sensitive at all. You said: "I emphatize with you and understand why you are offended by Pe@rson comment." You apparently think that I offended him. Accordingly, please be so kind as to tell me how I offended him.

Aha, sorry. I got mixed up. People with an ISRAELI stamp will be denied entry into most parts of the Middle East (except Egypt and, I think, Lebanon), not the other way around.

Ok, I get it now. It's just that when writing you just can't see the person. I thought you were pitbull angry. I believe he got riled up with your comment because it implies a that his government is making it difficult on purpose for britons to fly to IRAN.

I also think he was already riled up by Triden'ts 2E comment.

Then again, my impression may have been wrong

Cheers.

Yes, it is hard for Britons to obtain a visa for Iran, and less hard for Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, etc. etc.

NO Japanese airlines have ever operated the SP though they have every other 747 type.
Korean, China Airlines, Air China and Mauritius were the only operator from Asia.

The seats depends on the configuration . The range is slightly more than the 747-400.

Aha, sorry. I got mixed up. People with an ISRAELI stamp will be denied entry into most parts of the Middle East (except Egypt and, I think, Lebanon), not the other way around.

Lebanon is no exception. If you have an Israeli stamp whether valid or unvalid, used or unused, you cannot enter Lebanon. You will be questioned greatly and your things searched. You will be put on a return flight at your own expense. If you are found to have been carrying anything suspicious, you could go to jail and be put on trial. Especially if you are accused of being a spy for Israel.

You can however transit in Beirut Airport as long as you remain in the departure lounge (not leave the airport) and as long as your stay in the airport is no longer than 24 hours.

All Arab countries will not allow anyone with an Israeli stamp in their passport except Egypt and Jordan because they have peace with Israel.

I would dearly love to visit Tehran, and a 747SP flight would be a bonus.

The big problem is that I'm in the process of emigrating to the USA, and I get a hard enough time from the USA immigration agents at the airports as it is, without having a stamp in my passport from a country to which the USA is hostile.

I wish it was different, as I say I would dearly love to visit.

Thanks for the responses - and interesting discussion!
I checked the Iran Air website and I get the impression the August services will be flown by Boeing 747-100/200 aircraft. I guess I'll have to see about visiting Syria then. Do they welcome spotters?!

You can fly from Tokyo to Tehran on B747SP. This flight makes a stop in Beijing but I doubt you can fly only Tokyo-Beijing segment.
