I know why they are doing this.

It's so they can fly their A380 there when they get it!  Wink/being sarcastic Wink/being sarcastic Wink/being sarcastic

Is this going to be a non-stop flight? What's the reason behind "Brons2: I know why they are doing this. It's so they can fly their A380 there when they get it!"?

Yes all of EKs North American flights will be nonstop!!!

Next on the list are ORD-IAD-YYZ and LAX according to reports. Definitely ORD and YYZ for sure by the end of 2005!!!

It would be interesting to see if they will be able to fill up A380, if they choose to fly A380 to SFO. LAX might seem a better destination for them, as they are new in this market.

Do you think they will create a semi alliance to feed passengers from United's network. Why don't they serve IAH they already are good with CO and IAH has alot of oil traffic.

SFO is ready to handle the A380-800 and LAX haven't made any changes to handle such an aircraft let alone the B747-400.

I hope this clears things up  Big grin

OK, so the A345 gets in at a bit past noon to SFO and then sits for nearly 9 hours? That doesn't sound right. Do they hop from SFO to another location? Just seems like a poor use of a very expensive asset. Most wide bodies, after an international run, can be turned in two to three hours without any problems... so why the 9 hour sit?

OK, all you armchair airline CEO's out there... There is no way EK will generate sufficient traffic from SFO (my home city) to fill an A380. This is unfortunately the typical adolescent wishful thinking so prevalently found here on a.net. The A345 is perfect for the route because the capacity is a much better fit with the anticipated traffic. Why SFO? Bechtel & Chevron. Why have a plane sit 9 hours? Ask QF and NZ... they've been doing it for years at LAX.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

The A 380 of EKs can only be filled up from NYC and LAX and maybe just maybe ORD...it all depends too onward alliance connections offered by CO (from EWR)-UAL (from ORD and LAX) etc.

Yes the A 345 is perfect for IAD-SFO and YVR...however I would prefer the A 346IGWs instead of the A 345s for ORD and YYZ launch flights as they have the potential to fill in the extra seats on the A 346!!!

What the heck does this mean??? LAX is the #1 Pax 747-400 airport in North America.

Emirates always seem to park the aircraft up after the long trips. They did this in SYD and MEL before the introduction of the AUK flights. My guess is that it has to do with the flight connections in DXB. Most EK flights leave DXB at or around 0800 and then again at 0200. The arrivals into DXB are then timed at or around 0000 and again at or around 0500. If you are at DXB airport around these times then you will see what I mean. It gets very busy!

The main reason for those SFO timings is due to the best connections avbl for EKs tgt mkt which are the pax of the Indian Subcontinent region and neighbouring Arab states and East/Southern Africa!!!

Maybe I should of clarified my self on this one....I have read about the bays at LAX being very tight and when handling the B747-400 aircraft they are towed into the bay on arrival.....

Sorry about that BN747 I'm a fan of the B747-400 too!  Big grin

A quick question:

What would the flight plan be like? Will they fly over Europe then cross the north Atlantic and into Canada, then north western US?
I can't see how they can do that in just 16 hrs? LHR-SFO takes 11hrs!!

According to the great circle mapper:

DXB (25°15'18"N 55°21'51"E) SFO (37°37'08"N 122°22'30"W) 7041 nm

This route takes then virtually over the North Pole, crossing Russia, the polar sea and Canada on the way.

FA4UA...many carriers have their planes sit for a ong time. Why does it make no sense? If the plane turns around and leaves its get into Dubai at a bad time. NZ will do the same thing when they starts in June. CX currently sits 12 hrs. NW NRT flight sits 6 hours. Before the scedule change SQ had a 772 sitting for 12 hours. Thats just in San Francisco. Look at LAX with all the Qantas,Air Pacific, and Air New Zealand planes sitting like all day. Its all about schedule.

Why is it such a suprise SFO got Dubai over LAX? They stated a year ago that JFK and SFO were going to be first and everyone chatted about it. Now they decide on SFO and people are surprised?

Based on the distance stated above, I would expect a flight duration of 14-15 hours. Any other routing would increase this time.

As As739x stated, the EK routes were announced last year to include JFK and SFO only. There is nothing on their web page specifically stating LAX, IAH or other N.American sites. Yes, there is a site stating possible future route expansion but nothing definite.

Besides some individuals beliefs, the world does not rotate around LAX. SFO Is a separate destination and has nothing to do with LAX. This EK flight really does not have to do much with the companies based in the Bay Area but with the diverse populations from the sub continent. DXB Is a short flight from India/Pakistan/Yemen. These are the individuals who are going to be on this aircaft.

I'm looking forward to the flight touching down on SFO's 28s

QF009 from Melbourne and Singapore to London Heathrow arrives at 05:25 and then departs at 22:00. This means it sits on the ground for 16 hours and 35 minutes. It always happens at major airports.
