DC10. More Than Three Decades

Next August 29th DC10 lovers like me, will celebrate another anniversary (34) of this sometime controversial bird. First launched for AA and UA, I think it was an aviation icon.

May I know your DC 10 experiences?

How do they perform according to you?

With the very questionable safety record, I've always avoided them. Same with the MD-11.

For Many years the DC-10 was one of my favorite burds to fly on...IMHO it offered superb comfort and convenience for its time. If I recall correctly AA its' DC-10's set up for 232 pax in the early 70's...great room in coach! I probably flew about 50 DC-10 flights in the 70's thru the early-mid 90's. I did have the opportunity to catch one on AA the last month or so before they retired the type.

Yes, the DC-10 has had its' share of controversy...However...its' utility in the avaiation world continues to be proven with many units flying cargo and some still in pax service around the world.

I would easliy predict many more years of DC-10/MD-10 service just as the stretch DC-8's are still flying cargo almost 40's years after their initial flights.

hi,

I believe, despite the negative publicity in the 70ies, they are fine and popular aircraft. The fact that they are still operational today adds to this opinion I think Smile
I myself never flew one unfirtunately,but my parents did: to Kenya on a KLM DC-10, but they sat center row (four seats) so comfortable is was not really.

But anyway, I like the DC-10, a good looking and a still unique design.

My first trip on DC10 was by accident. It was first flight as an NWA employee and therefore knew nothing of aircraft. I booked myself on a DC9 to MSP from DTW. When I arrived at the gate the DC9 flight was oversold. Being a good NEW employee I volunteered my confirmed seat to a customer. (I quickly learned when you have a seat keep it.) Anyway the agent was very thankful and said she would take care of me on the next flight.

The next flight was about an hour later. Not realizing it was a DC10 nor where seat 1H was I had no clue what I was in for. When I walked on I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I quickly found my seat and realized I was in (at the time) first class. For a 20 year old who had only flown a handful of times before it was a huge deal. There was only about 10 other people in the front with me.

Loved the plane ever since.

Although getting the "DC-10-15's" was a very bad idea for AM and MX from a commercial standpoint, the birds became an icon in their fleets and they are greatly missed. It would have been so nice if AM had acquired MD-11's rather than 762ER's for its flights to Europe (although I like the 67's) but, hopefully, 772's will join AM's Mad Dogs, 73W's and 767ER's soon!!!

Never been on one but I love the DC-10. It's a great looking aircraft and I've got to fly on one before they've all gone!

Ahhhhhh

My first love! This gorgeous thing will always be my favourite aircraft... I miss them greatly. My first impression upon boarding the DC10( JU JFK-ZAG) in 1987 was pure awe. It was a building on wheels....(boy was I in shock for my first 747 flight....a -300, no less!).

I'll never forget them. It almost brings a tear to my eye to know that they are basically gone from passenger service. Seeing them @ MSY with AA... those were the days!

p.s. Funny this subject comes up, because earlier this morning, I paid a visit to my parents' home, and found a die-cast AA model of the DC10 that I had as a kid... Needless to say, it came home with me!
Long after the thrill of low price, lingers the bad taste of low quality..

On a side note: I wonder if one of the animators for "The Simpson's" is a 10 fan. I can think of a couple of episodes, i.e. "Marge vs. the Monorail", where the airliner shown is a 10.

I flew a few times on Continental DC-10s back in the mid-late '90s. Back then I wasn't even aware of the "controversy" or the safety issues they had. I don't think it would've bothered me anyways, I know it wouldn't today. I doubt I will get another chance to fly a 10, but if I do I'll deffinately take it. Very attractive plane and I'm glad I did get to fly them a few times. In fact, the DC-10 was the first wide body that I flew on that I can remember. I flew a few times on Airbus A300s when I was little, but I have no recollection of those flights at all.

I used to work on them when we had them at BA.

I sort of liked it, but was more nervous on that plane than any other, was quite often tech!!

I prefer to look at one rather than travel on it !

Saw a DAS cargo DC-10 land at LGW this afternoon , i couldnt believe/remember how nose-high it was/flew on final approach, came in rather fast too!

My first DC-10 trips were on AA from ORD to ACA in the early and mid-70's. We had numerous mechanical issues each time we went over the Christmas holiday for five years in a row.

Next, was a UA DC-10 from DTW-SFO (non-stop) in those days. Great service.

Since then I have flown, SR, LH, and of course NW.

The last time I took a UA DC-10 was pre 9/11 on the DTW-ORD run.

Great plane, spacious, and a classic.

I have many fond memories of the DC-10. My first flight was in Jan.'72, AA#185:LGA-ORD-LAX and Milton Berle happened to be on board. I was thirteen years old and remember it like yesterday. Also flew AA: ACA-DAL-LAX and TUS-LAX and many red-eye's LAX-JFK-LAX on the DC-10 and once on NA:LAX-MIA and NW:DTW-FRA. One of my favorite features of the DC-10, were the big windows. I miss them. I'm glad NW is holding on to theirs a little longer. Big grin

First flight on AA from SJU to JFK back in the 80's.I think it was a DC10-10 series.

My other flights were on RG DC10-30,and PLUNA(EX RG)DC10-30.
From EZE to GIG,GIG-JFK,MIA-GRU,GRU-EZE,and the last one on dic 98 from GIG to MIA.

Great tri-jet!

In the early 70´s when SAEZ was the country of old -8´s and 707´s, it was the first widebody I saw. It was an Iberia DC-10, standing next to a Pan Am 707. It was HUGE, the long nose gear stood taller than the 707 fuselage! Now THAT was a widebody!

Then I could fly on an Alitalia DC-10 from SAEZ to LIMC in the cockpit, from startup to shutdown. The panel seemed uncluttered, with big nice instruments, and the windows were really big, compared to the older planes.

Back, it was the first time I was in a modern cabin, with good flood lights that made me feel in a kind of space vehicle. Nice experience for an aviation nut teenager!

My first airline flight in August of 1980 was on a DC-10, UA, EWR-LAX and return. I have been on them at least 10 times, fully or partially across the US, and NYC area to Europe. They are an excellent riding plane, well designed, tough, quiet and a pleasure to ride on. I remember back in 1967, on the front page of a major NYC Sunday newspaper (no longer around) about the DC-10 and how you will be able to go coast to coast for $99 - a prediction that came true. Yes, the did have some flaws that almost destroyed it, but they were resolved and became a mainstay aircraft for many years. We will probably never see another new design 3 engine a/c again. It's is too bad they and the MD versions are in the later part of their useful life as pax aircraft.

Loved the DC-10. Wouldn't think twice about getting
aboard one again.Took UA's DC-10's.

I think it got a bad rap.Air New Zealand,Western and
American crashes were not the DC's fault.

First time in a DC10 was an NWA DC10-40 SFO-SEA in 1979, then a Wardair DC10-30 flight YYZ-NCL-LPL and return in 1984 or 85, I think. Definitely one of my favorite aircraft right from the start. After starting work for NWA, I had the good fortune to be able to ride on the DC10 numerous times, both as a passenger and as a jumpseat rider in the cockpit. This absolutely has to be the best seat in the house, right behind the captain with an enormous window right next to you. I would often ride jumpseat rather than in the cabin just because of view. The DC10-40 was a real dog and was never intended for international use by NWA. But, in their infinite wisdom, they did operate it internationally, and it was a nightmare to operate due to certified take-off weight limits...we often had to severely cut into the payload. In some perverse way, I did enjoy the challenge. The DC10-30, on the other hand, is a very capable beast and does a great job for the airline. It certainly remains one of my favorite airplanes.

I doubt I'll ever get another chance to fly the DC-10, but it and the L-1011 rank as my #1 and 1a aircraft. Luckily I got to fly an L-1011 for the first time (and also probably last time) this year. On both aircraft just the sound experience on takeoff is amazing. Totally different from modern airliners.

The DC-10 had its faults initially and this led to crashes, no doubt. But when you compare it to other aircraft of its day the safety record, espescially of the later 10-30 and 10-40 models is exemplary. Lets not forget that the aircraft was designed in the 1960s. Even as a whole the accident record is similar to the A300 and superior to the 747.

Greg, you might as well avoid cars, pretzels and other such things because they are far more dangerous to your health. You won't have many more chances to take a -10 and pax -11s are going out of style too...so don't miss out  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

What can I say, I'm from Long Beach were these beautiful birds were built, saw the first DC-10 make her inaugural flight when I was a kid.

I love this aircraft and her big sister the MD-11, I've been on many DC-10s over the years mainly with UA and loved each flight. For those of you that are scared to ride on one because of a questionable safety record get over it, though it does leave an empty seat for me.

My last DC-10 flight ended just this morning when I stepped off NW 32 at LGW. The DC-10 is a great airliner and I have enjoyed all three flights that have been on this type. Just remember to close your ears on take-off  Big thumbs up

In it's (our) day, the DC-10 in coach was the only aircraft that had 2-4-2 seating. Everything else started with 3-someting-3. So, you had two seats by a huge window (in comparison to Boeings / Airbuses of its era).

Then there was the fantastic sight of its tail engine at the departure gate/lounge. Always reminded me of a bomber. Knowing that one power plant could fly the whole thing, gave me infinate confidence amoungst the justified bad press of its earl days.

Then, the internal lifts, the ceiling height, and the cabin space. Like no other!

Awww, you've got me all nostalgic.

I had to respond. I've flown several other heavies, but the DC-10/KC-10 is by far my favorite. Plenty of power, payload, range and very reliable. All that and the fact it is the best-looking airframe out there.

I grew up with the DC-10, flying every two years with VIASA and LH DC-10-30s from Frankfurt to Caracas. This led to my passion for DC- aircraft, not only for the last one in the series. My last flight on them was as a child in 1986. Anyway, I still prefer them over the 747, A340 or any widebody twinjet. Its incredible longevity will keep it alive for many decades to follow.

Safety records are just statistics. IMHO, you have to analyze every accident separately. And only a single accident can be blamed on the aircraft's design (Paris, 1974).

Today, I work at Hamburg Airport in northern Germany - And I am happy to witness the great event which takes place every Tuesday when a 30 year old DC-10 from Ghana touches down in Hamburg. It looks majestic between all the A300s and single aisle jets.

Our family used to take trips to Hawaii in the late 80's through mid 90's. At first the trips would be 4 AA DC-10's, JFK-LAX-HNL-LAX/SFO-JFK, then 762's appeared on the routes and the DC-10's were religated to the Hawaii flights. They were always fun though, seeing the cigar engine at LAX (back before it got refurbished) always started a trip off right. The crew had those bizzare flower patterned uniforms for the Hawaii flights and everyone was in a good mood. The only real story I have was back in 1991 or 1992, there was a blackout in the Honolulu area and the jetways went in-op so we boarded the DC-10 via a stairtruck on the HNL ramp courtesy of an old orange Aloha Airlines Stairtruck with my dad carrying 2 suitcases and a stroller.

I flew on VARIG DC-10s when I was very young. My memories are faint but I remember the cabin was very spacious, and I vaguely remember a cockpit visit--oodles of light compared to the 747. VARIG was a first class airline in those days...
I too think it received bad press, and I think nature chose to side with that plane's hidden flaws, be they in the baggage doors, engine pylons, or deep in the no. 2 engine cowling (Sioux City crash). Given the chance, I would fly on an '80s build DC-10-30, but I would rule out a '70s build DC-10-10. That said, neither would I fly anymore on a 741, or an A300B, so I haven't singled out the DC-10 for isolated reasons.

AA used to do a D-10 at night JFK to LAX.

For some reason, every time I took this flight (maybe a half dozen times) it was very empty and I could spread out and sleep amist a group of middle seats back in coach. It was great to be able to by a cheap ticket and sleep better than the folks in bus or first (I cannot recall if this was an AA three-class flagship service).

The Dc10 was the first airplane I ever flown on and I do not think I have on any plane more times than a Dc10 or 737. Dc10 was very a lot of space. It was also built in the Los Angles area.

One of the best landings I ever experienced was on VARIG DC-10-30 PP-VMV flying from JFK to GIG just before X-Mas 1996. The take off was at an amazing climb rate, more than the normal approx 2000 fps. So smooth that it felt like a feather and the reverses were very lightly applied following which there was an applause from the passengers. All on a very sunny day approach was to SBGL RWY 15.
Second was a UA DC-10 to ORD a year earlier. Very smooth with no reverses applied. However VARIG pilot was better.

One of the best airliners ever!!!

Some 10 years ago an IB DC-10 captain (who had also flown boeing aircrafts)told me this: I´m sorry to write it in spanish: Boeing hace aviones grandes, McDonell-Douglas hace grandes aviones. The translation would be: Boeing creates big airplanes, McDonell-Douglass creates great airplanes!

After such a long time i finally had the chance to be on a NW DC10. The flight isnt that bad... had a very steady cruise.. however, on 1 night flight ( seated right to the rear), it feels like i am on a bus and its raining so heavily outside... i am referring to the sound in the cabin.. exotic.. haha
Anyway, the DC10 always makes me ' wahhh' when i sees it. it wont happen for other aircrafts even for MD11 which is almost identical. dont know why.. hope to be on the 10s again..

My first and only DC10 experience was in Feb 1999 on Canadian's C-GCPE from YVR - HNL. Flight Number was CP133 if I recall(?)

It was a great flight with good service, although the aircraft's interior was showing its age.

Thank you Canadian for a great DC-10 flight.

I've been on just a few DC10 flights, and every time I enjoyed the ride. I will always consider the DC10 to come in a distant second to the L1011 as far as classic trijets go, but still, not a bad aircraft when all is said and done. Thankfully, I still see a FedEx -10 pop in here on occassion, or more frequently, the military's version of the DC10, the KC10 Extender.

If SQ did not cancel their order in favour of the A340. The MD11 may still be around today.
it is too bad the old MD sales man try to sell the MD11ER based on a new wing design drawn on a napkin, very unprofessional.
