London To Athens, Which Airlines?

Thu Mar 18, 2004 9:03 am

I may need to fly from London, England to Athens, Greece in a few months, and I'm trying to find out which airlines fly the route. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Easy! Fly either Olympic Airways or British Airways, your choice.

I would go for British Airways. From what I heard about Olympic I would recommend avoiding them.

Hellas Jet also fly daily A320 flights on the LHR-ATH route. They should be the cheapest option

Your choices are

British Airways from Heathrow
Olympic Airways from Heathrow
Hellas Jet from Heathrow and Gatwick
Easyjet from Luton and Gatwick

Thanks everyone. I don't necessarily need to fly from LHR, I am somewhat flexible on the airport of choice and I was thinking of trying a new airline (have flown on BA before), so anything else? I just want to have as many options as possible.

I checked out expedia and Alitalia offers a pretty good deal on flights to Athens from London Heathrow. That would obviously mean flying through Rome or Milan but if you don't care about stopping in Italy that would be a nice option. I haven't flown Alitalia so if it was my decision I would give them a try.

You can try Easyjet LTN-ATH, but they're quite pricey on that route.

In case you are not aware, easyJet is a low cost airline, which means you will not get prices/tickets through web sites like expedia.

make sure you look at the easyjet website http://www.easyjet.com for their prices (checking both Luton and Gatwick departures)

Personally I'd agree with FlightLover though, fly a new airline, and get 4 flights for the price of 2!!

whatever you choose, have a great time!

Rich.

Expedia offers 244$ rountrip on Alitalia LHR-ATH via Rome for May-June period. If you book now for flights on EasyJet in May-June period (I guess that's when you are looking to travel to Athens) you could probably get a roundtrip between 100-120 pounds (roughly 160-190$) depending on the day you fly and the time.
I would go for a full service airline though. On a longer flight some pretty Italian flight attendants and good food is a nice option  Smile

If you would like to try Czech Airlines CSA you an fly LHR-PRG-ATH and same way back during the May-June period for about 190 pounds including the taxes. Prague is a nice airport, if you have never been there, try it, you will like it.

Have a good flight

I've flown this route several times, Easyjet's the cheapest, BA is by far the best, AVOID OLYMPIC at all costs-terrible service, RUDE, rude FAs.
Have fun!

From a frequent route's flyer (ME)
The best is T4 Hellasjet esp. the LGW-ATH-LGW route because it is cheaper than the LHR option.
Enjoy the seaside part of Athens is great (Better than Cannes).
Cheers!!!!!!!

If I where you I would avoid Czech Airlines. They are a great airline but I seem to remember that all the flights they operate to Greece land at about 3:00am. Because of the time difference, many airlines try to fly overnight on these routes.
Avoid the Olympic night departure from Heathrow (I think at 10:45 or there abouts) it gets in at 4:00am GMT+2. Also the crew left the lights on last time.
But Olympic is a good airline from my experience, try and fly on the A340 or on the A300, it is better than anything else flying that route.

Last Feb/mar I did LHR-ATH (transiting to CAI in ATH) on OA and I have nothing but good things to say about these flights. F/As were maybe not quite up to the job, but the following things made this an above average flight:

1. Food, excellent in my opinion, one of the best airline dishes I've had on a short route.
2. The A300, although a little dated has very good legroom, among the best in Europe with a whopping 33" seat pitch
3. The times were good an the flight was on time.
4. The ride was smooth and on such a short flight the lack of IFE was not felt.
5. The cheapest direct flight I found on travelocity, cheaper than Hellas Jet

Unfortunately the coffee may cost about 5-7 Euros on a seaside cafe....

Thanks everyone. I think I will try the Hellasjet option from Gatwick. As I'm almost sure I will fly from DFW to London so flying Hellasjet avoids the need for airport change. I have flown BA before and I'm not too sure about Olympic anyway. I did check Easyjet but their Gatwick flight doesn't suit my schedule, even though it i certainly a cheaper option.

Alespesl, I have not flown CSA but I have been to Prague airport (flew on the late Swissair in '99) and it is for sure one of the nicest airports I've been too. . .not too big, not too crowded, nice views from the terminals.

If you finally choose Hellasjet take a preview of the company and a browse on the fares at
And something crucial: If you are planning to visit Athens during the Olympics book your flight now because during that period the fares will be at least 50% up.
cheers again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This very good  Big thumbs up website may help:
http://www.plane-mad.com/flightguide

Although most flights have been mentioned above. Only other option is with Excel Airways, which is a charter airline but may be cheap from LGW.
