USA's LCCs Vs. EU's LCCs

When I compare both regions LCCs, I see that the US while not as cheap, offers much more amenities such as Live TV, Streaming Music, Pay per view, and so on... The EU LCCs still offer good service at a cheap fare, which is still the true concept of an LCC.

What do you think? USA's plus and minus, then the EU's plus and minus.

US LCC's pride themselves on providing service that is as good or in some cases, better than what the legacy carriers (US, UA, CO, DL, NW, AA) offer. While US LCCs may not offer the loss leader fares that Euro LCCs like to offer, their fares are still pretty cheap. Here's an example:

ATL-MYR (departing 5/1/04, returning 5/3/04 using the cheapest flights):
AirTran $138.20
Delta (operated by ASA) $294.20 (Delta had one itinerary that was $840.20!)
Hooters Air (4/30/04 departure [no flight to MYR on 5/1]) $171.00


Delta is $156 more than AirTran, $123.20 more than Hooters Air; Hooters Air is $32.80 more than AirTran (I guess you pay for those Hooters Girls somehow)

LCCs and legacy carriers on more popular routes tend to engage into fare wars with the legacy carrier usually having to match the LCC's fare on that route. An example is when AirTran entered the ATL-LAS market. Delta practically had this market to themselves (America West had dropped down to one ATL-LAS flight a day in post 9/11 cutbacks), so they could really charge what they wanted (after all, they weren't worried about what HP was charging on their once daily flight, as they have no feed @ ATL). Then AirTran starts ATL-LAS flights and Delta practically matches AirTran's fare (as did HP). The ATL-MYR example above is standard on less popular routes.

Problem is, that most LCC in europe fly fairly short routes due to the close proximity of the destinations. Most Ryanair or Easyjet flights are 2 hrs or under. Jetblue etc (due to the large size of the US) are flying 5-6 hour transcon flights etc, so they cannot be compared

NWAFA - why do you say that? Not necessarily arguing, just very curious as to your reasoning. I only have experience w/ the US LCCs so I don't have a basis for comparison. I can say that in all my flights on WN and others, I have noticed nothing other than professionalism. Sure the ground and flight crews might have fun with their jobs, but never has it crossed from enjoyment of their work to unprofessionalism. And the business aspect (booking, ticketing, changes/refunds) of dealing with the US LCCs has always been extremely efficient and business like.

The only European LCC I've had the experience to fly has been Air Berlin. This past November I flew them TXL-PMI-MAD and had a very good experience with them. As well as being quite professional compared to some of the U.S. LCC I've flown, they also provided In flight entertainment on their 737-8s and provided full meal service and complimentary beverages.. As far as airline food goes, it was ok, and comparable to food service on any of the majors I've flown with. As a side note, they even had a smoking section which was the first time in 23 years I've been on an airline that had one.
The price was fair as well. For my one-way ticket I paid 120 Euros and I thought this was quite good for the distance. I was even able to change my ticket twice for a very minimal fee. The first time I changed the date, and the second time I changed the destination to MAD from Malaga.
I would recommend them. They have a decent network in Europe. Especially throughout Germany and to Spain.

You also get better seat pitch on US LCC's than European. Compare 156 seats on a JetBlue A320 to 189 seats on a Ryanair 738. Also compare Southwest 73Gs with 136 seats to Easyjet with 149.
