"Streched" Versions That Outsold It's Siblings?

Fri Mar 19, 2004 4:14 am

The 763 has far outsold the 762. I was wondering which other a/c throughout history have had the "streched" version outsell the smaller version?

Be specific now. . .

Best example - the 727-200
And all the versions after 737-100s
The DC-6B outsold the DC-6
The L-1049/1649 outsold the 049, 649 and 749

Comet 4 outsold the 1
DC-9-30 outsold the -10
Do228-200 outsold the -100
MD-8x outsold the Dc-9
F100 outsold the F.28 (i think)

and there a bunch more...

F100 outsold the F.28 (i think)

But I dont think the F100 is a stretched version of the F.28. I always thought it was a brand new design.

In the past, most strech versions sold better than baseline models or shrink models since the operating economics of larger members of an aircraft family are better: 707, 727, 737-1st generation, 747, DC8, DC9, L1011, A300, etc, etc.

In recent years, that seems to have changed a bit, as airlines became more focused on frequency than the number of seats in an airliner.....of course, much has to do with making hub systems work.

The 753 was not a success (I think mainly due to timing, it became available just as airlines were cutting seats in their systems....the 753 is a low-cost gem, but arrived at the wrong moment), the 764 did not attract much interest (mainly because the A332 is simply a better all-around bird with more range), and the 739 is not selling that well, although in the 737NG family, the 738 is the mre popular than the 73G (its close) and the unpopular 736.

Thanks for all responses. . .

Has the out-of-production 737-300 sold more (currently) than the 737-700?

Also, which one has captured more orders, the A332 or A333?

Absolutely, but that's not a stretch. They're the same size.

The 332 is a shrink of the 333, and has outsold it significantly.
