Markets That Are Overserved From Your Hometown

Fri Mar 19, 2004 8:10 am

My home town is PHX there are a few markets that i think are way over served and i dont see how any airline could make money with so much competition. PHX to the LA which is served by WN and HP with tons of flights and UA with about 6 flights. PHX-ORD/MDW HP, WN, AA, UA, and ATA all serve this market nonstop in total there is about 20 flights there. How can there be that much demand. I dont know if there are any others but i dont see how all these flights can be filled because there are over 100 flights a day to the LA area how can you make a profit on all thos flights.

How is LA overserved? LAX is a major international gateway. I dont see how that is overserving an area. Seems to me that it is the way hub and spoke systems work.

SFO from EWR. We do not need 12 daily flights from EWR-SFO on CO, especially in comparison to LAX, which varies from four to six on any given day.

Does CO fly the same equipment to SFO that they fly to LAX?

I wonder how many seats that equates to each day when you figure that most of those flights have gotta be widebodies, correct?

CO uses mostly 73G's and 738's to SFO, whereas LAX gets two 762s, a few 752s, and 738s. It's a mix to LAX depending on the day of the week.

Thanks for the info man!

By chance, are 777s ever scheduled to fly from EWR to LAX?

I don't know if these city pairs are overserved because if they were, I'm sure they would reduce some flights, but I think these are the top 3 from New York (including Newark):

Washington (IAD-DCA-BWI): 97 flights a day
Chicago (ORD-MDW): 85 flights a day
Boston: 71 flights a day

And you wouldn't think New York is a business city now would you?

I am in Phoenix also and I find that maybe LAS is overserved. With so many HP and WN flights there it seems awfully overserved.

I could be wrong.

You left out the heaviest served market from New York City: Miami metropolitan area (MIA-FLL-PBI) has roughly 80 flights a day; around 95-100 during the winter.

This summer (next winter):

MIA-JFK: 42 weekly (42 weekly)
MIA-LGA: 65 weekly (63 weekly)
MIA-EWR: 63 weekly (63 weekly)
TOTAL: 170 weekly (170 weekly) approx. 24 daily

FLL-JFK: 91 weekly (147 weekly)
FLL-LGA: 98 weekly (112 weekly)
FLL-EWR: 54 weekly (61 weekly)
FLL-ISP: 14 weekly (14 weekly)
TOTAL: 257 weekly (334 weekly) approx. 36/47 daily

PBI-JFK: 56 weekly (77 weekly)
PBI-LGA: 35 weekly (49 weekly)
PBI-EWR: 35 weekly (42 weekly)
PBI-ISP: 14 weekly (14 weekly)
TOTAL: 140 (182 weekly) exactly 20/26 daily

Total of 80 flights during the summer, 97 daily during the winter. Then, add in the fact that many of these flights use big planes (MIA-JFK on AA is five A300s and one 762) and there are no commuter jets. It's a huge big market, though not really overserved.

You're right MAH4546. At the last check, there are currently a total of 90 flights to MIA-FLL-PBI from JFK-EWR-LGA which ranks 2nd for flights but definitely 1st for total seats since a lot of flights to the Washington area are regional jets or turboprops.
