New United Commercial!

Fri Mar 19, 2004 10:46 am

I just saw the new "animated" United commercial, and all I have to say is...

Thank god they brought back Rhapsody in Blue!!!! Talk about a blast from the past, I had no idea UAL was going to go back to the one song that people automatically thought of United Airlines when they heard it. Good job UAL! And having Jeff Goldblum's voice at the end of the commercial was a nice touch.

Anybody else like this commercial? I apologize in advance if it was discussed previously, but I couldn't believe me ears when I heard the song!

Did you see the newest animated United commercial? There are now two. "Interview" was the first to be released and "Lightbulb" hit televisions this past week. Both can be found on United's advertising gallery at:

http://www.unitedrhapsody.com

As for my opinon of "Lightbulb," I really don't care for it much, especially in comparison to "Interview" which I did think was excellently done. The animation in "Lightbulb" does meld well with Rhapsody in Blue, however the penciling is extremely light and the constantly changing shading makes makes the animation flow somewhat ackwardly. I'm assuming they wanted to highlight the center character, which is why everything else is drawn so light, but I think it could have been done better, either by adding more frames or keeping the shading set. The new commercial also barely plugs the product. There are view of the woman boarding the plane, as well as it flying overhead, but that really doesn't do much. At least in "Interview" there was that moment at the end, inside the cabin. But hey, at least Rhapsody in Blue is back.

The one I saw was "Lightbulb". At least it was somewhat original.

Both are extemely creative. Gotta hand it to united for creativity. And I really like the slogan "Its time to fly" better than the late 90s "Rising" which just seemed pointless. Good animation for both.

I have also torn out several united ads from my Time magazines. Also there are new ads for AA and DL which I have been tearing out as I come across.

I like them both, but think the new Lightbulb one was definitely, to me anyways, a more effective approach. Keep up the good work UA!  Big thumbs up

Wow. Those were really bad. I must admit, however, "It's Time To Fly" is a great slogan. Alot better than a few airline slogans (Lower Fares, Fewer Restrictions?)

I just saw it on The Apprentice and it's good, but the interview one is alot better. There will be no less than two more that will come out in the coming months. There is an article about this at http://www.united.com under press releases

I thought they were pretty good commercials. I must admit it though, hearing Rhapsody in Blue was rather heart warming. At the end of "lightbulb", when the announcer was talking about "Wherever you want to go in life, United can get you there..." I was so expecting to here those words: "United. Come Fly The Friendly Skies." It didn't happen though..  Big grin

Bring back the stripes!

//// United. Come Fly The Friendly Skies. Again!

The Lightbulb ad is directed towards women business travellers, a huge segment that controls a lot of money and sadly are ignored all to often by the legacy carriers.

The voiceover is NOT Jeff Goldblum (sadly, he's got an awesome voice) it's none other then Mr. Robert Redford.

I think Gene Hackman was the best voiceover for our ads... oh well.

Umm... I personally prefer the interview commercial, well, maybe the background music at least. It had that busy up-beat tempo. If you close your eyes, just listen to it at first, then when you watch the commercial again view the animation, everything matches well together. I'm glad they still use "Rhapsody In Blue."

I think the whole focus of the 'Interview' commercial is that you should always wear one brown shoe with one black shoe and you could get any job you want. Aim high.

Lesson learned.

Woh, I just watched the light bulb commercial, and it felt more like a Crayon commercial. I kept wondering when it was going to be over. I guess I prefer an airline commercial that actually has an aircraft in it. I was expecting a huge 777 in the new livery to come soaring across the screen at any moment, but it never happened. Oh well, whatever makes money.

Nice commercials (and print ads too)! They are all creative and unique to United. I think they'll be easily identified by the general public, although from the commercials it seems like United is mostly targeting the business traveller now.

In my opinion though, the overall tone of the ads (and the slogan too) makes UA look sort of desperate for passengers, and like they are urging people to travel by air. "It's time to fly" almost sounds like they are saying "Buy a plane ticket now!" It also doesn't really have anything to do with United specifically; it could be any airline's slogan, and it just doesn't work for me.

At any rate, I hope all of this helps United out of its troubles soon!

Funny to hear people complain of these ads, like you would rather see an ad for Preparation H?

I liked the ads, they were original. I wish more airlines had commercials. The only airlines i have ever seen ads for are WN,F9 and UAL. Who else has ads?

I am no financial wizard so my question is how and were, after loosing 2.5 billion and for the fourth time pushing back their emergence from bankruptcy, is United finding the extra funds to produce their commercial and re-paint their fleet?

"The Lightbulb ad is directed towards women business travellers, a huge segment that controls a lot of money and sadly are ignored all to often by the legacy carriers."

United had a great commercial in the early 1990s directed at women business flyers. It showed a mom in a business suit saying goodbye to her daughter in the morning before she headed to the airport for a day trip. Evrything the woman then did was mirrored by what her daughter did...mom went on a plane, daughter went into daycare; mom ate lunch, daughter ate lunch; mom gave a presentation, daughter played with art. At the end of the day the mom picks up her daughter after returning home and Gene Hackman says something about that being the most important meeting of the day. Excellent spot.

UAL 777 Contrail:

AA has ads, at least paper ads (get more airline, etc). They used to have the "Proud to be American" campaign, which I thought was really well done but they have since been discontinued.
That's why we're here.

Maybe it's because I'm not a HUGE aviation enthusiast but I really did not get the new United "Lightbulb" commercial. The first time I saw it I figured it was a United commercial because of the background music. But the commercial was so long and drawn out and dreary. In the end, the only question I had was, "What the hell did that have to do with flying United Air Lines"?! I love the "Interview" commercial. It's really nice to me. It has a warm, inviting feeling. But this new one . . . I dunno.

To Ual777contrail . . . I haven't really seen too many other airline commercials in recent memory either. I miss the old TWA commercials when they introduced "Comfort Class" . . . TWA - The Most Comfortable Way To Fly and the old USAir commercials. I think Continental used to have commercials too and I know Southwest does.

Hey United, it's not 'time to fly'...it's time for a new advertising agency.

The campaign sucks. The print ads are a very bad throwback to the 70's New Yorker magazine covers (but it doesn't work).

I'd say the new campaign is as bad as the new colours. United deserves much better.

Speaking from a marketing/advertising industry point-of-view in reference to some of the above comments:

The new UAL campaign is refreshing and well thought out. It is not time for a new ad agency. The campaign does the opposite of "suck" and the New Yorker Magazine cover throwback reference. . .well. . .I got a chuckle out of that, but that's besides the point. Even if it feels like a throwback. . .it works. You can look at it like the new "retro" vehicles of today. They are throwbacks too, but they are at the same time refreshing. What? Do you think UAL should have hired Pixar? And as far as comparing the new ads to the new colors. . .oh boy. Those new ads are good. The new colors are spectacular. I guess some of you must see the new colors in person and at different times of the day. Not one bad angle anytime, anywhere. The new c/s is excellent. Everyone involved with UAL's new image should get raises as far as I'm concerned.

United "lightened up" maybe you should too. Okay, before I get jumped on. . .the "lighten up" line was more of a light-hearted play on words and not meant to be taken that seriously.

Remember, there will always be critics out there for everything and anything they see, hear. . .etc. Especially when it isn't one of their own ideas!

Flashing back a bit, do you guys remember the parrot? There was one commercial (may have been the only one with the parrot) where it's playing the piano, but you couldn't see.. and the music it was really dramatic (must of been Rhapsody in Blue) - and the parrot looks up at the end.

I wish there was a clip of that somewhere out there!

AA has TV ads running; they feature "real" business people saying why AA is best for them, i.e. global reach, lots of flights. They are very "real world," with lots of in-terminal shots and aircraft lined up at the airport. The music is "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the M.G.s. The tagline is something like "I'm Joe Smith and I fly American."

Coa764....it's the adage, "You have to spend (invest) money to make money." Just like my investments, I spend to earn more later. This spending is part of their plan to exit Chapter 11. If they spent nothing on ads and paint (they paint anyway regardless of it being a new design), they would not remain competitive.

This is excellent work by United. They are investing to remind the public what an excellent product they have. The ads stand out and people are remembering and talking about them. Good work. I like what I'm seeing.

Frankly the entire "identity" that United has taken on this year is average. I dont hate it but I see nothing, not these commercials, not the new c/s, nothing that portrays United as anything but just another airline. The white and blue planes, the washed out sketch ads are just so PLAIN. The one thing i do like is the new slogan, its time to fly. Very catchy, the thing is though the voiceover sucks. It sounds like the guys talking in his sleep. I don't know how many of you saw them but over the summer Ford had an ad campaign with the slogan "no bounderies" and the voice over (both men and women depending on ad) just sounded awesome, intreguing. United can and shold do better, just one persons opinon.

Well said Bicoastal - I think it is great and is consistent with the airline they are building. Hopefully, enough pax will also return to make this all work for UAL.

I did not like either...here's why:

I love aviation. United's former commercial, the one with the pilot talking about his father and his history and passion for flying was AMAZING. The combination of aviation and a masterpiece song produced what I consider to be truly the best commercial ever. These new commercials hardly referenced anything aviation and the music was not powerful enough to get you in the mood. Second, I'm young, not yet a pilot or whatever else I will be doing someday, so these commercials have no effect on me. Flying is a magical, you could say religious experience for me. I have an amazing passion for it that was not ever addressed in the commercials. It merely appeals to those who could care less about anything aviation, which, if you're reading this post, probably isn't you either.

My 2 cents.
I'd rather be flying (real original)

I disagree, first off the commercial.. I mean really who cares? Most folks surf right through them. Secondly how can you say what UAL has done is excellent work? One would think it more closely resembles a retreat of desperation on th companies part. UAL is spending investors money that is meant to take them out of bankruptcy not extend it! The company is sinking and they are doing all they can to prolong a chapter 7 filing. Commercials, a flight named TED and shiny new paint will not mean nothing if the gov does not deliver on the loan. My opinion, UAL should not get it. They have admitted that without the loan the company cannot exit chapter 11 and for the government to back one company with a loan while denying companies that are no longer flying just might just not jive in an up coming election year. I am willing to bet that this and the higher fuel prices is the real reason for their staling tactic's.
