Strange Plane Landing At MCO Tonight

Fri Mar 19, 2004 12:03 pm

i hate posting these kinds of things trying to get everyone to guess what kind of plane i saw tonight, but I am really curious what I had seen a couple hours ago.

I had arrived earlier at MCO from DTW on Spirit and took one of the "reliable" LYNX busses back to my apartment off of Highway 436 just a couple miles north of MCO. I was walking back to the apartment when I heard a more unusual sounding aircraft landing (a type I didn't recognize by sound). The engines were really whiney sounding and kind of whistling (hard to describe) and the light configuration I did not recognize.

The plane came in around 7:45- 7:50 pm. The plane was landing on 18R and looked to be pretty big. The lighting configuration had quite a few white landing lights, but the fuselage strobe lights on top and below fuselage were white instead of red.

My first thought was an Antonov 124 since I never seen one at night and only seen it land at MCO a couple times. I went and looked at flytecomm and flightarrivals.com but I didn't see any unusual aircraft at that time on there.

Since nothing was posted, my next thought was military, since I seen a lot of military planes like C-130s with white strobes on fuselage instead of red for some reason. Could it have been a C-5? But why?

The C-5 has that whiney sound you describe. It could very well have been just that.

Yep, it's the C-5 Galaxy, dropping off limo's etc for Pres. Bush.

We had the C-17 monster in yesterday dropping off his helicopter.

The C-17 doesn't carry half the payload a C-5 carries. Line them up next to one another and the C-17 is a baby.

754PR,
Obviously you haven't seen a C-17 in person then. They really are beasts of burden. Really capacious inside.

Looks like Bush will be speaking at the Orange County Convention Center around noon tomorrow and that is just down the 528 from MCO. Think he will arrive sometime around 10-11am?

Perhaps a C-141? That's usually what brings the limos etc to New Orleans.

the C-17 seems to be a little larger than a C-130, and half the size of a C-5.

Clewatcher,

The C-17 is a LOT bigger than a C-130. I've been in them all. The C-17 dwarfs a C-141 in overall size, which in turn is much bigger than a C-130. The 17 isn't nearly as long as a C-5, but it is much closer to it in height, circumference, and carrying capability than the others. It is a big plane.

Tom in NO,

I've seen the C-141 support AF1 as well, but at Bush's most recent trip to DAB here for the Daytona 500 he did have a C-5 bring in the support. The description he gave of the engines 'whining' sounds to me a lot more like the turbine sound of the C-5 more so than the turbojet sound of the 141. Guess whoevers at MCO tomorrow in the right place will find out.

To all those who feel the C-17 is comparable to a C5:

Go do a simple comparison on the internet. I've seen them both. I've flown in them both, and I work next to them everyday. It is more realistic to compare the globemaster to the hercules. Much more realistic! Here are some simple dimensions:

C5 Maximum Takeoff Weight 840,000 pounds (378,000 kilograms).
C17 Maximum Takeoff Weight: 585,000 pounds (265,352 kilograms).

-and the max take off weight will be even more greater for the C5 once the new engines are implemented.

C5 Length 247 feet, 10 inches (75.3 meters).
C17 Length: 174 feet (53 meters)

Again, it's pointless to compare the two. Besides, can the C17 carry 70 passengers in it's upper deck. Oh, I forgot...it doesn't have one. Enough Said!!!!!

JMets18,

I was mainly addressing Clewatcher who thought the C-17 was 'just a little larger than a C-130'.

Here's what I was basing my opinion on:

Gross T/O weight:

C-17 : 585,000 lbs
C-130: 155,000 lbs

Cargo Weight:

C-17 : 170,000 lbs
C-130: 40,000 lbs

Length Overall:

C-17 : 172'
C-130: 100'

Cabin Length:

C-17 : 85'
C-130: 40'

Cabin Diameter:

C-17 : 18 x 12 (C-5's is 19 x 13)
C-130: 10 x 9

Almost 4 times larger, if going by weight, and almost twice as big if going by dimensions.

Not arguing, just stating that imo the C-130 and C-17 are nowhere near each other in looks, capabilities or size. Wheres the the 17 looks like a C-5 with for and aft fuselage plugs removed. But that's just my opinion. Smile

Haveblue-

Im confused - i wasnt confronting you...I was just wondering if anybody knew what Bush's itenerary looked like. Traffic on Orlando roads is bad enough without shutdowns due to VIPs.

TheFLCowboy,

My apologies, though I wasn't trying to be confrontational either I meant to address Jmets18. Sorry for the confusion. Jmets obviously has more experience around the said cargo planes, I was just trying to explain my comparisons. No harm  Smile

And Cowboy, I know exactly what you mean about Orlando traffic. I was working Wauchula today (south of Lakeland), and hit I-4 west of Kissimmee at 3:30. Parking lot. And I wasn't even IN Orlando yet. What took me just over 2 hours in the morning took 4+ on the way home to Daytona.

p.s. Edited my previous post to fix my mistake.

See above in my other post.

He is going to the Orange County Convention Center on International Drive so stay off the 528 (Beeline) and International Drive.

yeah it wasnt a C-141, I have heard them land before, they are really screechy when they land, almost hard on the ears.

What's the deal with the white strobe lights on military planes instead of red (above and beneath fuselage)? Is that so people can differentiate between civilian and military at night? Although I have seen red strobes on C-17s when I seen a couple flying at night around Charleston S.C.

Sorry if it came off as badgering. I see your comparison. How many people on this board do you think know the history behind your username?

Jmets18,

No problem at all.

And to your question, I doubt that many know what it means. Some of the more military aviation oriented may, but the primarily commercial fans probably aren't familiar with the origin.

I've only done the Live Chat here once, and surprisingly one of the few that were in there did know it, either from previous knowledge or the thread on here about the origins of the user names we have.

I'm a bit stumped on yours though. You a Daryl fan? If so, what's the J for?
