Is Sarasota/Bradenton SRQ Dead?

Whenever I check traffic in and out of SRQ, I notice that services are being reduced. I remember going there on AA in the mid 90s, with Eagle service from MIA inbound and a 727 to RDU outbound. Also, DL had more flights with bigger planes. UA went there as well a long time ago. Today, US announced that they will cut back services (article at http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040318/BUSINESS/403180722/1200). I think DL is still the strongest carrier, but "strongest" is relative...

Is SRQ loosing importance? Why? I know TPA is close, but still, are there other factors? What are the pax numbers?

Is SRQ dead, NO, but one could say that times have changed causing some reduction in service. Firstly, SRQ had service to several now-closed hubs (AA to RDU, TW to STL, lots of EA service), SRQ is caught between expanding MCO, TPA and RSW, and then there is the issue of LCCs and competition. With Southwest at MCO, several LCCs at Tampa and St Petersburg airports, etc, I would guess that cheaper air travel is available at these nearby airports.

This is sad news for SRQ  Sad

Hopefully, some other airlines will increase or add service to compensate. At least I could see the Delta 757 flights to ATL sticking around, even for the summer. It should help their new 732 service to CVG too.

Hey!!!! SWA has a large operation at TPA, one reason SRQ is truly hurting. It's sad for such a nice airport, I also remember hearing a while back on WFLA, that more service was on the way for SRQ, that didn't ever pan out i guess.

Well, I was going to have a great big post on this very subject one day. Guess I'll do it here........but not right now, I'm tired. Bedtime.  Yawn

But, just curious, why is someone in France checking the flights into little ol' SRQ?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy See you guys tomorrow.

I have been wondering about SRQ for quite a while.

As a brit holidaying on Longboat twice a year, I too have noticed the reduction in choice of service to the airport.

Normally using DL, I've seen the reduction from "full" 757s down to "full and always late" CRJs; infact, everything was so full last October, we had to route through TPA instead and drive the last bit.

Are landing and handling fees higher than TPA ?

Why the gradual but noticeable decline in services ?

Enquiring minds need to know !  Wink/being sarcastic
So I drive a 4x4. So what?! Tax the a$$ off me for it...oh, you already have... :-(

There are a lot of reasons but it's always about the money. What would you rather do if you were an airline? Fly a plane to TPA and have $8000.00 in fares in first class? Or fly into SRQ and have 10% of that because the pax used their frequent flyer miles. SRQ is a leisure market, seniors book trips 6 months in advance, people are generally cheap, if a fare is $10 bucks cheaper in TPA then they will drive the hour and take it. It doesn't make sense but that's the way it is. Flights could leave full and still loose money in SRQ. A city needs a strong business base to produce those full fare travelers. It just doesn't happen in SRQ. Plus TPA is only an hour drive away. 10-15 years ago it was much longer then that because I-275 wasn't completed. Several low fare airlines fly into TPA, pull overall fares down. TPA has several times the flights and direct destinations. So does that answer your questions? If you want SRQ to be successful pay the extra cash to have the privilege of landing were you want to land and not having to drive another hour to get to your final destination.

Just an FYI, Southeast Airlines tried new service from SRQ, and can you guess what city they flew to? Yea that's right ATL, how dumb is that? 1000 seats daily to ATL on DL and that's where they fly to, no wonder it lasted a whole 2 months. Should have went to the northeast or midwest. PHL, PIT, CLE, STL, MDW, DTW, BOS, EWR, LGA, JFK, IAD, CMH anyone of those cities would have been successful. Maybe even BUF.

Anyone want to start a regional airline with a hub in SRQ to the above cities? All we need is 50 million, and of course the know-how.
