US Flag Backwards, Why?

Fri Mar 19, 2004 8:02 pm

Having recently been looking at American registered aircraft I have noticed that on the left hand side the US flag is correct but on the right hand side it is back to front!! Any explanations? It just bugs me to why they have done that. And if you take USAirways for example then it don't even match the tail logo on the right hand side!

Maybe the stars have to be in the direction of flight? As most other flags are symmetrical, it's difficult to compare, but taking the Australian flag for example, it's the same story - it's looking the wrong way on the right side of the plane.

Probably some kind of a regulation then.

Its to show how the flag would look like if it was flying on a flag pole. This subject has been talked about before, but Im too lazy to look for the topic.  Smile

Typical: you find the same 'reversed flags' on the old Soviet Aeroflot tails

The flag isn't backwards.

Every see the traditional view of an army moving into battle with the flags in front billowing over the troops? The convention is to attempt to emulate that. So that is why you see the flags on the tails of aircraft placed so that the "standard" would be on the leading edge.

The new US flag patches the US Army is getting to sew to their uniforms are set up the same way.

Define "backwards".

A flag (if you look at one instead of at a typical drawing) has 2 sides which are mirrored.
For most countries it doesn't matter as they have left-right symetry, but the US flag does not.

What makes me mad is when people hang flags upside down, the South African flag has a red stripe at the top but here you see it upside down every day, and the British flag is another one that people get wrong regularly!

There are many flags with a cross, like the Swedish one below my name a few lines up. They look really strange if they are left/right mirrored. I prefer to have the flag correctly pained even though the wind comes from the wrong side.

SAS solved this problem with the three flags needed by making the flags which are painted somewhere at the far rear of every aircraft fully symmetric and by adapting a c.s.that contains the colors and internal order of the colors without suggesting any direction. Hmm, not very well explained but take a look at this photo:

This is funny... my kids and I were waiting for my fiancee's flight yesterday and a NW DC9 wandered by (when ARE they going to replace those?). My 12 year old asked the same question about the flag on the plane any my 10 year old boy answered it for her. You would think that if my kids can figure this out... *sigh*

Well, 1st of all the US Airways logo isnt a flag, it's a corporate logo, so it doesnt have to follow any rules. US decided it would be put on that way, so be it. Maybe it saves them money?

The actual flag can either show stars to the left, or as the direction of the aircraft would show it.

If you look at the actual flag on that US plane, you'll see it is correctly showing for direction of movement.

US carriers have the flag on A/C going in the directing that it would "flow" if the wind was blowing...I always found that a funny tradition.
