LH....warum So Teur?

Sat Mar 20, 2004 5:16 am

Im a college student and a German minor. This spring my class is going on a three week trip to Germany and I cannot wait, since I have never been. We're responsible for getting our own airfare and I've noticed that LH is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. They want no less that $1100 whereas BA, NW, AF, and others want around $720. (Orbitz) Then I went on their website and they want like $5000! It seems weird that LH would be the most expensive option to flying to their own country. Any reason? Is their service better...alot better? Just curious.

well LH isnt better, they just have expensive fares since they seem to get pretty good load factors.
just go for whatever is cheapest on that route, after all it isnt a 16 hour flight you are going on  Smile

LH's prime target are business pax. I don't like their attitude towards economy travelers. Everytime I flew LH's economy, they gave me the feeling that I had to be grateful that I had the privilege of flying with them and giving them my money, instead of another airline. Beside that, their service is quite poor, except you fly business class of higher. Their only advantage is their excellent on-time performance. Regarding the high fare, I would agree with Zak. They probably have good load factors.
I would try to get a reasonable fare with United.

What about the UA fares. They are doing a joint venture with LH so I would think, that the fares are harmonized. At least in Germany the fares of LH and UA (Germany-U.S. only) are the same.

Actually, LH has a strength in professionalism - people love it and buy it...

I'm personally sorta dissapointed by Star's mileage reward program, so I picked AA and OneWorld as my fav carrier, about 40,000mls a year...

I enjoyed all flights in LH, but Eco seats are driving You nuts, when taller than 1 meter...

I was always treated perfectly in LH coach, but seat pitch...wuaaa...never again...

They really make truckloads of cash with the biz pax, that's LH's deal, but strangely, Swiss and BA, known as premium carriers, offer biz for half-price, compared to what...

I usually get cheap seats on the UA/LH combination when I go from MSP to ZAG.

By the way, it's 'Warum so teuer?'  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I just did study abroad in Germany and I experienced the same with LH. I flew United and loved it. By the way, I believe that LH economy doesn't even have inflight entertainment so it might not be worth it to you. Also, I found the best prices on Good luck!

P.S. Es ist auch so Teur, weil du waehrend des Fruehlings fliegst.

LH seems to be very flexible with their ECO fares, at least in germany. last year i flew to boston, and the LH flight was about the cheapes i could get (i guess something like 699 euros FRA - BOS. however, a friend booked two weeks before, and he payed 799. online fares seem to be adapted to demand.

cheers, r.

Sometimes LH is as cheap as LCC carriers are - ok almost.
But I have heard that LH is more expensive when booked outside of Germany. I never did, so I can not comment on that.

Hmm wait ... let's check:
FRA - ORD - FRA 5/1 - 5/21
€ 831,02
€ 663,02 <- special online fare

MUC - ORD - MUC 5/1 - 5/21
€ 1745,48  Wow!

As for the treatment: With one exceptions I was always treated kindly.

I heard in a Radio commercial here in Munich, that you can fly Lufthansa from Munich to London for only 99 €. Munich to Milan or Venice only 149 € and Munich to Madrid only 179 €.

Take AI, man!! EUR 318 incl.!!!, under specials. Not sure whether still available

Yeps, I can confirm that. I often take the EUR 99 to London... very uncomplicated to book on

Then, I took LH very often, because it turns often out to be the cheapest. It depends whom you book with... They often have good deals

It is often the case the airlines flying to their home countries are more expensive. I suppose its the convenience of a direct flight, but they also have customer loyalty at their home base. But you can also often get specials if you go via another country, e.g. I once needed to go from Rome to Cape Town and the cheapest was with KLM via Amsterdam (i.e. cheaper than Alitalia). On another occasion the cheapest from Amsterdam to Cape Town was via Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian. The craziest I ever heard of was during the 80s from Nairobi to Dar es Salam (which is only a one hour flight direct) with Aeroflot via Moscow (about eight hours per leg). So it is worth shopping around if you don't mind transiting somewhere.

Have a nice time in Germany.

It's true, i don't why but Germany-US is cheaper than the same route the other way arround... Lufthansa will start some special offers soon, always the same...

I did HAM-FRA-JFK-FRA-HAM for € 290,- incl. taxes..., booked 3 weeks prior to departure Big grin

Halo Vanguard. Mein Nebenfach ist Deutsch also. I study at FSU (Florida State University), you? Well, I actually get the contrary, for the dates I fly LH is cheaper than others and i'd rather fly with a OneWorld carrier. I suggest you contact statravel. My University is visiting Dresden this summer and we probably wont go on Lufthansa because we all originate from cities throughout Florida, but on an individual basis, Lufthansa has been cheaper. What I suggest you do is you try to find the cost from a different gateway other than Chicago and then factor the price of a domestic fare from Chicago to that city. In fact, we recently had a group from Dresden visit Tallahassee and it was very funny because they did it liek this DRS-FRA-ATL (LH) ATL-LH / KTLH), USA - Florida">LH / KTLH), USA - Florida">TLH (DL) and LH / KTLH), USA - Florida">LH / KTLH), USA - Florida">TLH-ATL-FRA (DL) FRA-DRS (LH) . I dont know why but thats how it worked out for them. Tschuss!

Vanguard, please check out KLM. They got special rates for students. You do need a special student card of some kind, but it is all explained at the website.
