I loved Excel and American. American had plenty of legroom in their 777s and TV's in the backs of all their seats plus the TV programs were good. I loved Excel because the seats were leather and extremely comfortable and they had TV's dotted on the ceiling about 3 rows to 1 TV which is better than any other charter airline I've been on. I'm traveling on TCX in the summer and I will give a report on them as soon as I get back, however Excel and American are going to be hard to beat. This is my opinion so don't please shout at me for my view.

Thanks LHRman  Big thumbs up

Although I haven't flown it, I would think that SQ's Executive Economy on their LeaderShip A345s would probably be the best.

If you get Economy Plus, United is definitely the best. Sadly, they have too many aircraft that are not equipped with that section and their regular Economy is not that good, even though it still outperforms Lufthansa.

It's not Lufthansa  Laugh out loud! Sorry, I had to. I'd imagine, for airlines in the US, that UA and CO would be near the top. Once NW has all A330s on trans-Atlantic operations, they'd be near the top. Although, I'd rather take a DC10 in a middle seat, before I'd take a new A330-300 with the latest and greatest in-flight entertainment. Call me crazy, but I have a thing for older aircraft, and haven't had the opportunity to fly many of them- just one, the B727.
Back on topic, I think that UA, CO, or NW would be the top 3.

My vote goes to LAN CHILE, p tv on every seat, excelente meal and wine cellar, also they have a great digital music selection, from classic to pop and rock. Nice stewardess and cool liveries on board.

AA with their "more room" made a very comfortable economy class! AF has a good economy too!

may be biased, but they are comfortable....SN Brussels Airlines, especially the A319 (similar to BA seats). New inflight catering product has been added recently, adding to the comfort of the short- and medium haul flight.

Long Haul; last one i flew was CO BRU-newark. Thought they had a very comfortable economy class!

Most of all I love the Korean Air economy class. They really offer great service, very nice and kind crew and the planes usually always puctual.

Korean Air is my first choice at all.

For inter european flights and to North- and South America I love most the KLM economy service.

LanChile at the moment. Very good IFE and PTVs, footrests and headrests, very good meals, and fine wines and drinks at no charge.

Although I've flown BA,AA,KL and AZ long haul, I made this flights quite a long ago,(except AA) so I can think that BA Economy is better than LanChile's.
But as I was saying, the best economy class I 've experienced is Lan.

i personally think that BA is the best. i've flown to the US on Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, and BA before, and BA stood out as being the most friendly in terms of the staff and the cabin ambience, although i didn't fill out the immigration paper properly, and got shunted to the back of the queue at JFK.

The world traveller cabin on BAs 747 was roomy enough for me, although admittedly I am not very big, and I was sitting next to a bulkhead both ways. It also had a PTV on the back of every seat, and i had one that folded out of the armrest due to the seat being at the bulkhead. the only problem with BA, as with most of their longhauls, is going from Heathrow.

I'm split between UA Economy Plus and AA. E+ has a little more room, but I found AA's seat to be more comfortable.

I also found that UA normal economy legroom was barely less than AA MRTC. I knew there was less legroom, but still could not notice it. I was in row 19 on a 737-300, so I know it was not Economy Plus.

For friendly genuine cabin service that values their economy passenger, I choose Air New Zealand. Of course some would say I'm biased.

But seriously, once NZ have upgraded their 744's economy cabins (IFE etc) from later this year and introduced their new medium sized longhaul fleet (with possibly A332's to replace the 763's), I'd choose NZ hands down for flights to/from New Zealand and Australia from around the Pacific.

My vote goes to LanChile, followed by British Airways.

British Airways have nice seats and IFE with PTVs, but Lan beat them in my opinion with more softer seats and AVOD in Economy.

If you want excellent legroom and meals, go for Egyptair.

BA probably offers the all-round best economy (world traveller) class experience.

I have to say AA. Why? More Room Throughout Coach. Every seat in coach (ex A300 and 752) has extra legroom.

SWISS... best economy class... with 32 inches of pitch?!

Get real!

AA with 34 inches of more room throughout coach is supreme. Particularly on the 777 aircraft with PTVs. Nice headrests too.

There is just nobody else worth flying with transatlantic. If it aint AA, I aint going!

Oerk,

My criteria when selecting an airline is not based solely on seat pitch. 32" is enough for me.

However, on LX you don't have to pay for headphones, drinks, etc...

And the IFE is MUCH better (featuring AVOD). I thought the food was better, too.

Nothing against AA, I will be flying them next week to MIA, LAX, and PHL from CCS. But IMO, LX has a better Y-class product.

I've only flown oneworld in the lst 10 years. In that alliance AA has the best for long flights because of the additional leg room. After 3 ro 4 hours it does make a difference. CX folllows because of their cervice and BA is close behind. UA gets a special mention because of Channel 9, but that is all that gets them on the list as it has been 15 years since I flew them.

Top of my list goes Air France both for short haul and long haul. For the things I look for in Economy, they have it all. Great seats, great IFE,great food and great staff.

I would like to say my favourite was BA but the cabin feels too cramped and you get the feeling they are skimping on things. In fact you get more legroom and a better cabin environment on Easjet.

At the bottom of my list goes SWISS unfortunately. The most uncomfortable flts I have ever had. Nice food, nice staff but apart from that, completely awful. The good people of Switzerland deserve a better airline than that.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

On short haul between the US and Mexico, without a doubt, Mexicana which
has made a name for itself with their coach class product.

Good seat pitch, choice of meals, free wines, Mexicana beer, hard liquor
and friendly service.

On some flights like YYZ, YUL, YVR, EWR, ORD and certain flights, they have
triple AAA flights with upgraded food product in coach.

Now with the introduction of Plasma Screens on the A319's and A320's,
you can also enjoy movies and programs according to length of time.

They became famous in the USA for their coach product as they had one of
the best.

i remember seeing on the egyptair website that some seats are still smoking....this would kind of deminish my perception of the Y-class. No offense. Big grin

Qantas' economy product is really good, definitely up there with the best. Comfortable, Genuine and warm service ( not mechanical like many other airlines) great entertainment and quality catering. Im not being biased. but there is a 'feel' when travelling with Qantas even in economy!

For me, it's Lufthansa or American. Lufthansa's domestic economy is great! I like the pleathery seats, they're comforting, and cool on a hot Croatian day!

I really enjoy American's MRTC. Though I must admit it was only ok on the 757 and MD-80, I was astounded by the F-100's!!! The F-100 had a ridiculously large amount of room, which I enjoyed. The MD-80s sleak appealing seats, with the pleathery headrests are a nice touch. The 757 is only OK.

EK A340-500's. Beats all airlines hands-down, pitch 34", 500 channels of AVOD entertainment, reasonably high standard of service.

EK's other economy product on B777's and A330-200's not as good, but still quite solid.

Malaysia Airlines has the best economy class, great service (3 times winners of best cabin staff), great legroom 34", great IFE with PTV'S, great food, with 3 main course selections on most international flights. Anybody who has flown them knows what I'm talking about, definately 5 stars!!!!

Interesting that there is such a divergence of opinion on who offers the best Y class, but not a lot of divergence of opinion on what goes to constitute a good Y product. From the above it would seem that

- Seat pitch is critical. Even if all the other service elements are acceptibly good, a lack of seat pitch can render the entire experience null and void
- IFE is important (for better or for worse). People are coming to expect it on longhaul service, and its absence or inadequacy is noted by most
- Food is important too, but people seem to have a lower expectation from Y class food and so it is not a critical rating factor.
- Crew attitude and other intangible service elements. This is clearly subjective and highly anecdotal, but plays an important role in personal choice regarding repeat business.

So what would be the perfect Y class then, combining the opinions in this thread with the statements above.

- AA's seat pitch. MRTC is clearly a winner, and 34in pitch seems to be the one to shoot for.
- LA's IFE - AVOD is clearly the top seller in this area, otherwise the minimum is multichannel PTV with digital audio channels.
- AF's Food. Quality food is a must, with good wine and alcoholic drink selection.
- QF/NZ's crew. Friendly personable service is more likely to win repeat business than efficient but impersonal.

So now somebody out there in Airlineland take note, go out and build it !
