Interesting that there is such a divergence of opinion on who offers the best Y class, but not a lot of divergence of opinion on what goes to constitute a good Y product. From the above it would seem that
- Seat pitch is critical. Even if all the other service elements are acceptibly good, a lack of seat pitch can render the entire experience null and void
- IFE is important (for better or for worse). People are coming to expect it on longhaul service, and its absence or inadequacy is noted by most
- Food is important too, but people seem to have a lower expectation from Y class food and so it is not a critical rating factor.
- Crew attitude and other intangible service elements. This is clearly subjective and highly anecdotal, but plays an important role in personal choice regarding repeat business.
So what would be the perfect Y class then, combining the opinions in this thread with the statements above.
's seat pitch. MRTC is clearly a winner, and 34in pitch seems to be the one to shoot for.
's IFE - AVOD is clearly the top seller in this area, otherwise the minimum is multichannel PTV with digital audio channels.
's Food. Quality food is a must, with good wine and alcoholic drink selection.
/NZ's crew. Friendly personable service is more likely to win repeat business than efficient but impersonal.
So now somebody out there in Airlineland take note, go out and build it !
