Seatmaps.Net

Mon Mar 22, 2004 12:51 am

I have recently found a new seat map site. It is just about the same as Seatguru, but it has different airlines in there. They seem to be adding new aircraft evey day now. I have let them reserve seats for my trip next week and they were actually able to get a bulkhead seat that showed up unavailable when I tried to reserve it myself. Pretty cool site.

I am quite fond of this site myself. When I couldn't find my airline (LTU) on there a while back, I just sent them a message and two days later they had setmaps on there. I guess they are lacking manpower though, since they offered me to maintain the LTU pages for them. Maybe I will, because they are pretty good and sure reply quicker than Seatguru.

Well, I am sure they need a lot of help. I contacted them about that and they said that everybody was welcome to participate. Down side is that you don't get paid - but at least they will display your name as page editor for the section you're working on. Might look good in a resume I guess. Maybe I will actually join them after this semester. They don't have anything on Continental yet, and I'd like to change that.

Wow they need serious help on their webpage.

I can't scroll down enough to see the last few sentences and all the airlines.

The logo on the top only shows half the plane.

I'll stick to seatguru for now.

I've had the same problem using Opera. No idea why. Works fine for me using IE though.

I recently let http://www.seatmaps.net reserve seats for one of my flights. I just got back from that trip and I have to say that they did a great job. I got to fly in a great seat that my travel agent couldn't reserve for me, when I asked for it. http://www.seatmaps.net was able to do just that though. They do charge for this service, but on longer flights it is well worth it.
Oh, by the way, have you seen their new menu? It's a real improvement. Now it fits my screen.

Looks cool in Opera, but it doesn't seem to work with my Netscape version either (ok, it's an older version; I have to admit that)

No, that's not your fault. Up to now they only have five available online. If you send them an offline request (use their contact form), they will be able to send you info about almost any airline though. They are lacking manpower and so it may take a while for them to get it all on the web. But they have been adding new aircraft every day for the last few weeks.

I don't want to be picky, but why do you guys count five?

1. Air Berlin
2. Condor
3. Lufthansa
4. Mexicana
5. Northwest
6. LTU
7. United

You're right. It's seven now. They really are adding more aircraft every day. When I checked it yesterday or so it was just five.

One thing surprises me tough. Some seats that show up as good seats on Setaguru show up as bad seats on Seatmaps (e.g. UA CRJ row 1). How can opinions be so different and who is right here?

Well, I guess that preferences differ. In the given example Seatmaps is definitely right though. Those seats suck.

I agree on that. Those seats are horrible.

how much does it cost to use this service? how long does it take for them to answer your request? do you think they can get a seat reserved in economy plus when you have an economy ticket. i'm referring to united. i'm flying IAD-GRU april 30th.

thanks.
let me know.

As to my knowledge you would have to pay $25 for this trip (roundtrip to South America). If you booked through a reservation system, they will ask for your reservation code. Usually they reply within a few hours, but since it is the weekend, it might take until tomorrow if you try it today. The only way you can get a seat in Economy Plus is if you are a Mileage Plus Premier or better OR you hold a ticket in Y, B or M booking classes.

Thei pricing depends on both airline and route. If you are flying Star Alliance to South America, it will be $25 and to Europe it will be $20. For some reason they charge more for some flights on OneWorld. The nice thing is that they only charge those fees for the first passenger and each person traveling with you will only be $5 roundtrip, no matter where you go)

It is also a little more expensive on some airlines that charge an arm and a leg for the reservations, since they pass on the cost. But if you ask me, it's really worth it.

Bad site, detailed information under construction. A cheap copy of http://www.seatguru.com Seatguru rocks and seatmaps sucks.

My $0.02

Pretty poor cross-platform support, and a whole load of Javascript errors. Still, if the more seat maps out there the better.

I agree. You can't use Netscape on this site at all. I haven't found a single error using IE or Opera though. Those seem to work just fine.

What are you guys talking about? I am using Netscape and it works great. Are you maybe using older versions? I have 7.1 and everything seems to work OK. I have noticed that I get automatically redirected to the URL

http://seatmaps.hellwigs.com/english/indexns.htm

when I use Netscape.

Cool, they must have changed that. It works great now. A couple days ago it wouldn"t display the planes. Finally I can also use it from work (Linux platform with just Netscape on it).

I really like their new color scheme too. The old one was just too blue.

Well, I don't know about the scheme. I guess it looks better than before, but they could do better. I love the new links on the right though. They make much more sense than the old ones. The one about getting into First Class without paying for it is really awesome.
