EWR-AKL. What Airline Should I Fly?

Mon Mar 22, 2004 11:34 pm

I am planning a holiday in New Zealand later this year (november, perhaps) and was wondering which airline I should fly.

1) I think a Pacific routing would be closer than a Atlantic one?
2) Since Qantas and Air New Zealand fly non-stop LAX-AKL which one is better? With ANZ I'll get flying club miles on Virgin.
3) I have found that if I split the ticket EWR-LAX and LAX-AKL it works cheaper. Any disadvantages of doing this?

Any info will be appreciated.

cheers

If you buy 2 separate tkts be sure to have plenty of time to connect because if you orig flt is delayed and you missed your conx flt. The orig carrier is not liable for reprotecting you to your final dest. Any more info e-mail me

I think you should fly Malaysia Airlines from EWR-KUL, and then KLU-AKL. I am going to do this trip in July from CPT-KUL-AKL. I also think you will be able to get your miles credited to Virgin's program.

When I did this a number of years ago, on the same route, and still true now, it was on United. You may be able to get a good deal on the connecting transcon flight. You would get a load of United FF miles too. Try to get a flight from EWR-LAX earlier than the one they may want to give you, as should allow at least 2-2.5 hours to connect in LAX from the EWR-LAX leg to the LAX-AUK leg. Flights to/from AUK will go through Bradley International terminal, different from the domestic terminals. You may want to consider flying EWR-LAX leg the day before and stay in a nearby hotel overnight in LAX area - helps to break up the jet lag. Don't forget the LAX-AUK leg is a 12 hour flight.
Once you are down there, you may want to do something I did, that is take a plane from Aukland on NZ Air to Christchurch on the south island, and start your journey there. You could rent a car from Christchurch, drive it all around the South Island, drop it off at the ferry station at the northern tip of the South Island, take the ferry across by foot, and rent another car in Wellington. NZ is an fantastic place to visit - outstanding scenery, excellent roads, reasonable prices, good people and food. Visit the NZ tourism websites for ideas on where to go and how to get around.

Do check our Malaysia Airlines. From time to time they have special fares and promotion packages incl stopovers in Malaysia and a sidetrip.

If you can take ANZ and get Virgin points, it should be a no brainer- that's a lot of points to give up!

LTBEWR,

thanks for the info about transit time at LAX, I was thinking on taking a flight in the evening after work from EWR to get in to LAX an hour and a half before the Air NZ 11.30 departure to AKL. Maybe that's not a good idea.

JBLUA320,

I would love to get the miles but if other options are more lucrative (money, good service, convenient times etc.) then I may forego the miles. For example: Qantas flies JFK-LAX-AKL with a plane change in LAX. Perhaps that is less hassles than the others.

cheers

What about Air Tahiti Nui from LAX-PPT-AKL? They are supposed to have good service. Just an idea.

Well NZ is well known to have great service on their flights. I personally prefer them in everything but F class (because their seats in first class are horrible compared to today's flat seat standards). Overall they have a good product and even feature footrests in pacific class (economy), as well as having 34'' pitch compared to 31'' at Qantas. However Qantas has ptv's and NZ does not, so that could be important.

The biggest drawback using NZ is that you will have to walk a long way at LAX. You could fly UA or CO to LAX from EWR, but would be forced to go from terminals 6 or 7 to terminal 2. This can be a long walk or a long wait for the shuttle bus. You would need at least 90 minutes in LAX domestic to international and probably 3 hours from the international leg to make the domestic leg comfortably. This is difficult, but the walk could me a nice refresher during the trip.

I would personally choose NZ for the good service and the miles, but it can be more difficult if the other factors are important.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

NZ has a special fare at the moment of USD898 plus taxes r/t LAX-AKL, or USD1353 plus taxes (approx USD62) NYC-AKL. It's valid for travel in November and has a maximum stay of 1 month.

If you book with NZ I can assign you a nice window or aisle seat (or even emergency exit if it's available on the dates you want!) - but sales finish soon and I doubt a fare this cheap will come up again this year..

If you want further info feel free to contact me!

You might want to check out the island stopover deals with Air NZ - they usually allow this for free. Islands to choose from : Tahiti, Rarotonga, Fiji or Samoa.

First, Thank you all for your feedback. It is most appreciated.

To make things confusing I will probably joined by a friend from BOM, and we want to sorta time it that we arrive in AKL around the same time. Quite confusing all this, but I need to figure out a way to bring this together. Any more suggestions...

cheers

SJU767 is correct. If you do not purchase your tickets all together (i.e. the same transaction) neither carrier is responsible should any of your flights cause you to miss the other.

If you are looking to add mileage to your VS flying club account you can take CO to LAX and the NZ to AKL. Both carriers accept the VS card.

UA no longer flies to AKL.

Hope this helps...

Since u are part of the VIRGIN freq flyer program which has a linkup with CO and ANZ...in order to take full advantage of your MILES as this is a huge long haul route...fly CO from EWR to LAX and then ANZ from LAX to AKL. It is much shorter flying this route than EWR-AKL via DXB-KUL on Malaysian Airlines!!!

Make sure that in LAX u have 3-4 hours minimum to connect with your ANZ flight as it will involve change of terminals plus you will have to carry your suitcases with you from one terminal to another unless ANZ has a hookup with CO which I doubt as theyre more in with UAL.

However at EWR airport when u check ur bags in, show the counter lady your ANZ tkt and request her as a courtesy request to please have transfer the bags for u. She can do it if she wants to. I remember last summer I flew AC YYZ-ORD and then KU ORD-KHI and the AC counterlady at YYZ gladly did the needful though they dont normally as it involves a change of terminal at ORD!!!

SQ
EWR-SIN-AKL. The direct flights should be up and running by nov. Also VS points should be compatible I think.
