Saudi Cargo To Start IAH

Tue Mar 23, 2004 4:59 am

IAH will be a new Saudi Arabian Cargo destination starting April 1, with an MD-11 routing Jeddah-Brussels-New York (JFK)-Houston-Brussels-Dammam-Jeddah.

They have chartered here for a long time, but it's nice to finally have them on a scheduled basis.

Could it be that 2004 will be the "Year of IAH" ?! If HAS is not too careful, they just night help turn IAH into a real int'l airport! With CI an PK slated to start service this summer and now only days away this suprise pops up, this should be an interesting year for IAH spotters.

Interesting news.

The Brussels Airport Authority http://www.biac.be/cargo_tt/ states that this flight will be operated with the B742 and thus not with the MD11.

I believe IAH-BRU is again through JFK.

Any idea what kind of stuff gets loaded on these SV cargo flights ex IAH?

What specifically made SV chose for Houston as their second (?) US cargo destination?

Thanks

Agree with Thomas...

the Asian airlines are really going for IAH, and this is before CO moves most of their ops out of terminal D!

Thanks for the clarification Established.

I'll take a 742! Saudi joins Air France, British Airways, Cargolux, and Polar Air Cargo in offering 747 cargo flights to IAH.

So if I am reading the schedules correctly, I am surmising that the 742 will likely arrive in Houston early Thursday mornings...

I am sure oil will play a big role in this flight...it has been rumored for quite some time.

Saudi Aramco is based in Houston, TX. That could be a factor. Also, Saudi Arabian Airlines has had a ticket office in Houston for a very long time. Again, I agree with Lear777, this probably has a lot to do with Oil.

In regards to the arrival times, I suppose it is safe to assume that these are ZULU (GMT/UTC) times....Correct? If so then the 1730 arrival would be 11:30AM local or am I mis-reading this?

IAH really is taking the forefront as far as Asian/Middle East expansion with new carriers is concerned - much more than ATL, DFW, and other competing airports. Good to hear that more foreign carriers are coming to the States, whether they're cargo or pax or both.

Agreed, Bartond- and I think it's about time. I have been waiting for these new flights for years!

I think all three- PIA, CI, and SV- have potential to be real proving cases that Houston can be a big draw for airlines from those parts of the world. I really feel that this is just the beginning for IAH. More airlines are expanding beyond their traditional gateways and Houston is proving to be a beneficiary of it.

I have long been surprised that more airlines haven't tapped into the Middle East-Houston cargo market. I expect SV to find a significant amount of success on this route.

From a spotters point of view, I cannot wait to see PIA 777s and China Airlines A340s at Terminal D (next to KLM 767-300s, also new), and just beyond them, the dusty 747-200F of Saudi at the new cargo complex.

KLM 763s? When is this suppose to happen? Has IAH just lost it's last pax 747 service?

That rings a bell. I do seem to now remember something about that. I guess I am getting old and the memory is starting to go.

Thanks CAL.

Yes, Lufthansa is supposed to upgrade to a 744 in October I believe. I wouldn't get your hopes up though because they were scheduled to start flying 744's last October and it never happened.

Speaking of Emirates, I always thought IAH was on their "original" list of US destinations. Hopefully one day they will come. I think they would do better then PIA.

As for EK, I have been hearing that for years as well as Qatar and Air India. I treat all rumours concerning new services with a grain of salt until I see some official word from the carrier themselves, flights listed in a CRS, ect......Even then I remain a little skeptical. I am not fully convinced until I see their birds parked at one of IAH's 5 terminals. I have seen major announcements from Iberia, Varig, Swissair, Singapore Cargo, Carnival, Caribbean Airways, Hawaiian Pacific, Trans Atlantic (the last 3 were paper carriers that never really got off the ground) , all promised IAH service none ever materlized.

So, while I am excited about the recent announcements, again I won't be 100% convinced until I see CI, SV and PK's planes either flying overhead or parked at 'D' and the cargo ramp.

Egyptair will be starting services to IAH in the spring of 2005. They were supposed to be launched last year but the war in Iraq and the SARS outbreak made them delay the launch. Even though the flights will go ahead, frequency, aircraft and routing have not been finalised yet. I'll keep you to up-to-date as soon as details come out.

Macmac,

Try this link, it should answer some questions

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1468582/6/

Horus,

I believe that you are sincere in your posts regarding Egyptair coming to IAH next year and I sincerly hope it comes to pass but I remain as awlays skeptical. A lot of things could happen between now and then. I remember when SR was ready to start an IAH service in the late 80s only to get left at the alter when they decided to serve ATL instead.
