Will Jetblue Add BOS-JFK Flts Sometime Soon?

Tue Mar 23, 2004 2:57 pm

I was excited when I learned that JetBlue started service to Boston not so long ago. However, that changed when I learned that all of their flights to and from BOS were point to point routes, with no flights connecting to the JFK HUB.
I'd like to try JetBlue, but I have to no use going to these destinations currently served from Boston, and without a link to JFK to access their route network, I really don't have a reason to fly with them.
Also, I fly Internationally several times a year and would love a cheap link to JFK where I occasionally find a cheaper fare then out of BOS. (I live in Portland, Maine and above all wished JetBlue had come here to KPWM from JFK instead of Burlington-kBTV). But if not, Boston will work! I usually travel there to catch flights anyway, because of the much cheaper fares.
I was wondering if JetBlue plans to add flights to JFk from BOS in the not so distant future? I am surprised to see that they don't operate one now.

Not quite sure why you would be...

...ever notice how many BOS-LGA flights operate on any given weekday? And that isnt even counting CO at Liberty.

I am only half surprised. All those flights you mention between BOS and LGA are $200-$400+ a pop. I'm certain JetBlue could do imensely well on the route with much lower fares. I think one reason they don't do it now is because they don't have enough a/c to offer the necessary frequency that is required to compete in that route. I think it's only a matter of time until we see JetBlue operating in the highly lucrative northeast corridor. Another reason is that JetBlue is not a hub airline, they are a point-to-point airline. So offering connections through JFK is not in their immediate plan.

Perhaps this will all change once the new 100-seat Embraers come on board. It would be nice to see JFK-BOS but JetBlue can't offer the frequency to compete as it stands right now.
Also would not be surprised if cities like Portland get direct JFK service with the Embraers. All of this is still 18 months off though...

Perhaps when they start getting their EMB-190s, it will be a viable route.

Richierich,
To get an EMB190 from JFK to PDX it will have to make a stop. (2449 miles) Neeleman has already said that ABQ is as far east as we'll go with an EMB190 nonstop from JFK. (1816 miles) Anything farther than that would be severely weight restricted. However, I'm sure that PDX would be a great city for an A320. (but I hear that it is pricey airport to operate from) We are starting to run out of cities on the West Coast to fly red eyes to. What other cities are we missing.... PHX, RNO, LAX?  Smile Neeleman said that he likes BUR, but that 6,886ft runway does not look promising for an A320 transcon.

ONT737,

The posts above are referring to Portland Maine, not Portland Oregon.

I don't think it's terribly likely unless they use the EMB-190's, and even then, I'm not sure they'd do it. The problem is, that there are lots of competing modes of transportation between Boston and NYC, and many of them go to more convenient locations than JFK, at lower prices. jetBlue's JFK-SYR walk-up fare is $109 ($114 without the website discount), for a route that is 9 miles longer than BOS-NYC. And yet Amtrak's BOS-NYP walk-up fare on the Acela Express is $99 -- and that brings you from downtown Boston to Manhattan in 3.5 hours. If you're really looking to save money, the Fung Wah Bus can get you there (Chinatown to Chinatown) for $20 or less.

The LGA-BOS shuttles work (somewhat) because LGA is considerably closer to Manhattan than JFK. And even then, Acela has picked up a lot of market share on the shuttles with the increased hassle of tighter security post-9/11. JFK-BOS is only a viable alternative if you want to travel from Queens, Brooklyn, or Long Island to Boston -- and even then the time savings are likely minimal over the Acela.
