Nwa Pilot Suspended

Tue Mar 23, 2004 8:32 pm

I have read a story on usatoday website about NWA pilot suspended for landing during high winds (and or tornado warning), so I am curious what is a procedure for pilots during such a situation? Do they have to fly to another airport? And how dangerous are high winds for landing and for taking off.
cheers

Yes, they divert to a alternate airport. Fuel will not be an issue as you are required to have enough extra for the aircraft to reach a suitible alternate airport.

And how dangerous are high winds for landing and for taking off.

Winds are not dangerous, as long as they are within the maximums. If they exceed the maximums, you either dont take off or if you are landing, you divert.
