Smallest City Or Metro Area With Largest Airport?

Tue Mar 23, 2004 11:29 pm

This might have been asked before, but what is the world's smallest relative metro area/city with the largest or most important international airport?

FRA stands out to me. There are, what, 1.5 million people in the FRA metro area (this is a guess...the city's population is more around 600,000 I think) and FRA is one of the world's great international gateways.

Both Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia have among the largest airport facilities in the world - but they each has a population of just over 1 million. They are only busy during the annual hajj pilgrim season.

Dubai is not bad either in terms of the amount of traffic handled relative to the city population of approx 700,000 - 80% of whom are expats.

I would think AMS would qualify too - I think around 750,000 people live in AMS, and yet Schiphol is HEEUUUWWWGGE.

In the USA, I'd think Cincinnati has to be up there.
I know Cincy is not small but it is a lot smaller market than, say, Chicago or even Detroit. Yet CVG has a ton of flights and the high number connection traffic. Mostly thanks to Delta and Comair.
I don't know the O & D figures for Cincinnati, but my guess is that it is quite small.

MCO was the first city that came to my mind. Under 200 thousand within the city and less than 1 million metro.

This is true, Pinnacle. MCO (and to a lesser extent LAS) have a lot of traffic for a relatively small market, population-wise. Obviously these are huge leisure markets.

MCO metro gets bumped up because of the proximity of the University to it. That adds 42000 people just inside the area.

I would think that SLC would be up there if we were talking a few years ago. They don't have much in the way of population in the valley but they were the western hub of DL for a while. I couldn't go out west without flying thru SLC or DFW.

TheFLCowboy,

Didn't quite follow your message re: MCO, about the 42,000 inside the University. Are you refering to UCF? Does it have 42,000 students living on campus? I would have thought most of the students were commutors who live in the area and would have already been counted.

If it does have 42,000 students living on campus that would make it about the largest in the US.

What university at MCO?
MSU at East Lansing(LAN closest airport) has 45,000 and Ohio State(CMH)
has 49,000. We can have lots of fun with enrollments, faculty and staff of college and Universitys. We call also add military bases. This subject is a good one but quite flexible.
I don't use the city proper in gauging the population to the nearest major airport. I use the "greater surrounding" area. Perhaps a 10 or 20 mile radius
from the airport itself would be a better way to address this question.
My guess on the original question would be Sacramento..They have quite a terminal under construction. So does RSW(Fort Myers FL).

One that has not been mentioned that popped in and out of my mind is Charlotte, NC (CLT). Census 2000 has about 1.5 million in the metro and it sees a lot of service, especially with the USAirways hub.

By comparison Cincinnati is larger at 1.9 million, but has similar, if not slightly less air service. Salt Lake City is at 1.2 million in the metro and Orlando is 1.6 million in the metro.

I have the biggest city with a very small airport
Mexico City, 20,000,000 million people, and a two-runway, four-terminal (three of them connected) airport. Always with thousands of people inside, and only can perform 60 takeoffs/landings per hour using both runways,,, whats this??

Delays are made by Mexico City's International Airport fault!!!

Cheers

I'll second the nomination of RNO. We do about 5,000,000 pax annually with a total metropolitan area of about 250,000.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The city is just under 1,000,000 people, and there isn't really a metro area (lol)- just a LOT of sand and crystal-clear water. DXB strikes me as a sort of MCO-esque airport. For example, the surrounding area isn't exactly huge, but tourism is the reason why the airport is gigantic. DXB is freakin' huge- most of you can attest to that! So, DXB gets my vote. I'd LOVE to go there some day- flying in would just be the bonus. Great airline (Emirates), great airport, great attractions, plus I'd LOVE to go to that Palm Island thing.

Well, you could argue:

Covington, Kentucky with CVG
Aurora, Colorado with DEN
Grapevine, Texas with DFW
and so on.....

They are all cities and metro areas, just not major, but exactly what the post is asking for
I'd rather be flying (real original)

Not 42K on campus. Its 35000 within 10 miles i think they said. They come out with reports every now and then. If you spread that over to the southwest a little towards Melbourne it grows. Most people will tell you they will drive from DAB or Melbourne to MCO because of lower fares.

Since we're not exactly quantitative (i.e. noone has put forward what ratio we should use: number of pax/number of inhabitants, or number of takeoffs/number of inhabitants, or number of gates/inhabitants, airport area/inhabitants...), let me bring up some EUropean candidates:

1) Palma de Mallorca. Quite a small town, but A LOOOOOT of traffic in the summer months, and quite a sizeable airport.

2) Hahn. Again, not an airport of the size of MCO, but then it still is a Ryanair hub and a big cargo airport, although the "town" of Hahn has something like 20 houses. And it really does not belong to the FRA metro area (Ryan got that explained by a German court some time ago)

3) Shannon. There isn't even a town, but it has significant traffic, bot pax and cargo.

4) Luxembourg. 77,000 inhabitants, but a decent regional airport with connections to all major and secondary European airports, and one of EUrope's biggest cargo hubs.

Any thoughts on these?

Smallest city in USA with airport with airline passenger service
PLN... Pellston Michigan ...Population 650. The airport serves Northern Michigan
lower peninsula and is about 20 miles from Petoskey and 25 miles from the straits, thats the top of Michigan's lower peninsula. Now served with NW Airlink Saabs and Canadairs, North Central used to send in DC9-50's and 30's in the late 60's and throughout the 70's.

I worked at NWA res for almost 2 years and only sold 1 ticket to PLN. I asked the guy what was there? and he said he was going to Mackinaw Island.

Back to original ? ABQ comes to mind as a non-hub a/p. Metro area only 800K (by including Sante Fe) yet it supports over 100 combined jet flights a day from AA, HP, CO, DL, NW, WN and UA. DL operates 757's and at one time TW used L10's

You are almost right with FRA population, but the metro area is 2.5 Mio...

Good question, if we take the city per se, than FRA, SFO etc. But with metropolean area, the population rises.

How about canadian or aurtralian cities? OK, maybe they are too off-shore. Then AMS, as one post said. How big is the metroarea there? Good question...

Calgary does pretty well, about 860 thosand people (2000) so a little bigger now and about 8 million pax a year. Which is quite good compared to montreal's in city 1,040,000 in city, roughly 3 million metro and relatively the same amout of passangers.

The PBI/FLL/MIA trio of airports is located in the extremely-densely-populated area of Southeastern FL. Why you would think that MIA serves a small area I don't quite understand.

Malaga, Spain. With a population of just a few hundred thousands, the airport receive scheduled/chartered flights from nearly all airports in the EU/EEA. The same can be said for Palma de Majorca.

Yeah you can slice and dice this question any number of ways (Grapevine - DFW is not what I'm going after) but I'm with the people that mentioned Dubai, Orlando, Amsterdam, etc.

I'm trying to think of cities where you look at the population and think - how the hell does that big of an airport lie in such a relatively small city? I know there are many factors but it just seems strange to see a city like Frankfurt, which is the 5th or so largest city in Germany but it's arguably one of the top 10 international airports in the world. Or Amsterdam, which has under a million people but remains a thriving airport and it's so close to Heathrow and Charles de Gaulle but still runs tens of millions of pax through it.

What about DEN? The airport is about half the physical size of the city itself, larger than the city of San Francisco, twice as large as Manhattan, and almost as large as the District of Columbia. The Denver Metropolitan is about 2.5 million and yet the airport is one of the busiest of the world.

I think LAS may take the cake, though. Metropolitan Las Vegas is about 1.2 million and yet it is nearly as busy as DEN.

As for the one wondering about the college near MCO, I think they may be referring to the University of Florida in Gainesville, although Gainesville is actually closer to Jacksonville than Orlando.

Like Mozart pointed out, Shannon is so small it isn't even a county (part of Co. Clare), yet 50% of transatlantic flights must land there thanks to some obscure law.
So EI and other carriers have the pleasure of flying widebodies on a 35-minute flight  Wow!
BTW, only EI has the right to sell seats on that route.

In the US, Memphis is the smallest metro area with a hub airport. Considering it has both NW and FedEx, it has to be up there.
