Wed Mar 24, 2004 1:24 am

I just read in "Airliner World" magazine that Easyjet might wanna buy 747s to support their rapid growth!! There was even a picture of an 747 with Easyjet titles on... does any know if they for a fact has flown 747`s before and if, on what routes?

Maybe Easyjet are going to expand into the Transatlantic market. Check the month of the Airliner World edition, then read the registration of the 747 pictured in the article and you'll soon have an answer to your question!

The article says that EasyJet may subcontract some of it´s summer schedules to a third party B747-200 operator... They have been in contact with italian start up Dodo Air about this. Nothing in the article says anything about EasyJet buying 747:s.

This is a joke ?? Yes, for sure !!!

EasyJet is buying 747-400s and will operate them in a standing room only configuration of about 2,793 passengers. There will be no window shades and instead of lavatories they will just install floor drains so there will be no waiting to go to the bathroom. The planes will have a large rear cargo door (like the combis) to load pre-loaded containers with passengers to speed up boarding. Really, trust me...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Dear PA120,
This had me fooled also. I found nothing extraordinary with EasyJet operating 747:s. I didn´t read the article though, perhaps that´s why it got me fooled. And also since I´m not british, I saw nothing extraordinary with EasyJet operating 747:s on wetlease on busy routes.

So they got me too...

The reason they succeded is because the story could very well have been true.

It could backfire though if Easyjet DID start operating a leased 747 on busy routes over the summer season..... Smile

No no no... it's all true! The 1st of april thing is just pure coincidence! Look, here's the picture to prove it:

Great repaints Rez.

An easyjet 747 looks good, but the baby colours just don't go on the 777!

MD80Nut - think your getting a few low costs confused, sounds like a perfectly reasonable suggestion for the future Ryanair service!

Is it possible for a LCC to run a cheap 747 at high capacity and still keep fairs low?

Catatonic - I don't know the economics of it but I'd suspect the answer is out there already, no LCCs fly 747s so no? I'm sure there are people on a.net who know why not, it's just getting one of them interested enough to answer..........!

PeopleExpress operated 747`s, and went bust but wasn`t it more due to the lack of a prober reservations system?

Disgracefull and sacrilege maybe, but I think if BA were to have sold concorde, this would have been a more likely reality that one in Virgin livery

Nah, not a fan of the Concorde. Give me a FR 732 or 738 any day.

Really, I thought I was the only person who didn't like the supersonic jet even though I admit it was a great piece of engineering. I have to admit that I went to LHR to watch the last 3 landings. Am I a hypocrite? maybe a little Big grin

PA120,
I believe People Express went under because they expanded way too fast beyond their means. As I recall they kept adding planes and destinations without rhyme or reason. I think that's why most LCCs these days are more gradual and systematic in their expansion and they stay within their business plan.
