Anyone Else Planning To Abandon MNL?

Wed Mar 24, 2004 2:21 pm

What a sad summer for MNL. First Air France decides to drop the non-stop out of CDG. (but fortunately goes daily through BKK) Then, Egypt Air decides to abandon MNL and now Swiss Int'l!!!

What's going on?

Is anyone else planning to leave Asia's smile? Or maybe some new one's are coming?

When the new terminal *finally* opens....it will be great to see some airlines come back....

As for CO we will stay with our flight to GUM/SPN and ROR..MNL Is just too close to HKG several EWR bound pax transit via CX MNL-HKG xfer to CO HKG-EWR..There is not much leisure or Business travel to MNL these days...Compared to other Asian destinations..GUM/SPN receive many more tourists than MNL..also US Citizens are only allowed in the PHILIPPINES for 28 Days without a visa compared to 90 days in Japan and Other countries ..

Why would anyone be in the Philippines for more than 28 days? If you feel that you do, visa extensions are easily avail or of course you can *gift* your immigration officer on arrival.

Mabuhay!

An article in the last Airliner World magazin said that Philippine Airline is bracing for huge expansion in terms of fleet and route network. Hopefully that will include re-instating links between Manila and both Cairo and Zurich.

Anyone know about exact details of their growth plans?

April should give us more light into what will be happening.

Either a new route to Europe, or new routes to mainland China.

I would hope Europe would be brought back, however, I see China as a big money maker for PR.

There are NO direct flights to Beijing by the way from MNL.

diesel83 : even if a lot of majors leave, you can rest assured that foreign airlines such as SQ and CX will up their presence in the Philippines. hopefully, PR can use this to their advantage to establish a strong base in the absence of fierce competition, akin to MH in KUL.

in Singapore, the Filipino foreign worker , for his/her fluency in English , is a very important figure, be it as domestic help or in the under-staffed medical industry. so good connectivity between SIN and MNL is paramount !!
