Why Is Ryanair So Cheap To Milan

Thu Mar 25, 2004 1:25 am

Planning to spend a week in Italy in May, Ryanair were quite expensive to Rome and Pisa at over £100 before tax (weekend flights). But to Milan (or rather Bergarmo) it is only £20 return for exactly the same flights. I thought what the heck! Enjoy the lakes of Italy before driving south to Florence (I was going to rent a car anyway). Also Bergarmo has one the most thilling views on landing as you fly over the lakes and the mountains! You have to see it to believe it

But why is Bergarmo so much cheaper then Rome or Pisa - they cannot be makeing much money on it.

The big airlines had competitive fares but to get them meant mid afternoon flights which were not as conveniant as Ryanairs early morning departures - late evening returns!!

1. Because they are struggling to fill seats to Bergamo and lowering fares
2. Because Milan is traditionally a business route
3. Where there is competition people are chosing other carriers (value vs Fare)
4. Because they are a wonderful carrier - Oh most wonderous art thou!  Smile
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

Because they don't fly to Milan but Bergamo.

Umm...BGY is slightly further from the centre of Milan than MXP (the main airport).

There is a quick and cheap coach service (about half-hourly) between BGY and Milan, which takes about 50 minutes each way.

I took a coach from both BGY to the centre and MXP to the centre. If I recall correctly, it took longer to reach the centre from MXP. There is a train service from MXP, but is naturally more expensive.

It is both quick and easy to reach the centre of Milan from BGY.

I was last in Milan (and BGY and MXP) earlier this month. Had a very good time.

Another reason for the lower fares is the season. I bet you they'll increase come July and August.

LOL Pe@rson! Understatement of the year. Also let's not forget the train service from Milan to MXP...

No, not really. It's merely 9km further. What's that - 5.8 miles? No big deal, especially as it's quicker by coach from BGY to the centre of Milan than from MXP to the centre.

If you reread what I put, you'll see I said "There is a train service from MXP, but is naturally more expensive."

Let's be fair - Bergamo isn't THAT much further from MIL than MXP

MILAN (BERGAMO) ORIO AL SERIO AIRPORT
-----------------------------------------------------
GMT PLUS 0100 (PLUS 0200 30MAR03-25OCT03)

ITALY IT

POSITION OF AIRPORT : 30MLS/48KMS NE OF MILAN

MILAN MALPENSA AIRPORT
------------------------------------------------------------
GMT PLUS 0100 (PLUS 0200 30MAR03-25OCT03)

ITALY IT

POSITION OF AIRPORT : 29MLS/45KMS NW OF MILAN

Not much in it, really. And is the MXP train running yet ? If it is, it isn't a proper airport express, because it stops twice en route.

I would check all airline fares. When I was in Italy last summer, it turned out cheaper to fly Lufthansa/Alitalia/Air France from FCO-CDG and from CDG-MXP than to fly Ryan air - the difference was the added fees they don't tell you about when they publish their fares and the high cost of transporation to these outlying airports which don't have the train or cheaper Malpensa Shuttle service.

It costs 6 Euros for a one-way ticket from BGY to the centre of Milan or vice-versa, compared to 4.5-5 from MXP to the centre of Milan or vice-versa. So not much difference.

If an airfare on a low-cost airline seems a little higher than expected, I recommend searching considerably in order to see if there's a cheaper deal. Eugdog said that he has found a STN-BGY-STN for £20, presumably including all taxes, so that won't be beaten by BA, AZ or any other airline.

When I add the cost of getting to and from the centre of Milan from BGY to the £20, it's still less than £30 - which is probably £50+ cheaper than the next cheapest deal.

Where FR have a lot of low fares few days before the departure date, it's because they need to fill all the seats. Even if you pay only £20, for FR is better then an empty seat Big grin

I did check the air fares. As I said the airfares from the full cost carriers were about the same but with really bad times (arrivals coming late in the evening and mid morning returns). But no one came close to Ryanair to Bergarmo. Total cost was £40 vs about £150 with the other carriers. But since I intended to have a car the distance is not a problem.

Ok, I'll grant you Bergamo, but that train worked well when I took it.

Hi!I live near Milan and I have to say that the distances between BGY/MXP to city center are about the same( It has no sense to say 3 or 4 KM of difference)...also it depends... in which Milan's district you start your trip..(between BGY/MXP no doubt about LIN only 6 km from city center)

For the other question (why Milan is cheaper...)
well Milan isn't so tourist as Rome so as for me low cost carriers (that serve especially leisure traffic) try making money on this routes...
