Why Does AF Switch To 777 CDG- LAX In Summer?

Thu Mar 25, 2004 2:37 am

I noticed that in the winter half of the year AF uses 744 on this route. Why is it that they switch to the smaller 777 during summer. I thought that summer was peak. what the deal?

'cause there is less demand................
'cause the 744 is needed somewhere else................
'cause winter is the peak, since if you want some heat in summer you can just stay in France, and LA is frigging hot in summer............

Isn't summer the peak time for U.S. travelers to visit Europe? That's why airlines or at least the U.S. airlines increase capacity to Europe, so that doesn't really explain why AF would down size their aircraft for the summer.

Does the frequency remain the same?

Haha well said Maersk737.

The increase in US demand may not be enough to compensate for the decrease in Eurodemand.

Starlionblue: Your flip comments on this forum are truly unnecessary.

My guess for the 777 taking over the service is because LA is a premium market for Air France, and as all the 747's are having 1st Class cabins removed from their aircraft. Since all of the 777 will retain the first class cabin, the switch from the 747 is to continue to carry high yeild passengers

What is AF's configurations on their 744s and 772s? Is it a really a significant drop in capacity? I think only the capacity in the premium cabins will be effected.

The 744s won't be configured for a while yet,AFAIK.

The two 777 CDG-LAX_CDG flights do add capacity vs the single 744 service..but there still the evening 744 CDG-LAX-PPT-LAX-CDG run in addition to this..so we see an AF 744 every evening except one.

Stock1985, I'm just speculating. I really don't know the real reason.

According to AF, the AC with the largest capacity in total pax is the 772.
At least according to their magazine. I guess the 773 will carry even more. So it's more of a drop of yield.
Where have all the tri-jets gone...

?

I'm confused. Yield/capacity? 772>744? I'm sure that you have a valid point, I'm obviously just too dumb to get it.

from what i know about AF i would say that they need to reduce their first/business class product during the summertime. at least from the east coast i know that AF offers ridiculous promotions for first & business in the summer because all the extra capacity is put on for economy, but there are more F/J seats than they need.

i don't know about configurations, but perhaps B777 has fewer F/J seats than B744.

also, as implied above, there are probably some markets that have severe spikes in demand during the summer months that would demand the B744, while LAX might have a more even seasonality.

LAST July, AF used their B744s to:
BEY, 1/week
JFK, 14
JNB, 7
LAX/PPT, 3
MEX, 7
MIA, 7
MRU, 7
NRT, 14
SFO, 7
YUL, 7
CAY, 7

Right now, they use their B744s to:
BKK/MNL, 7
JFK, 7
JNB, 7
LAX, 7
LAX/PPT, 3
MEX, 7
MIA, 7
MRU, 7
NRT, 7
PEK, 7

YUL is DEFINITELY going to be a market with huge swings in demand, and perhaps pulling a B744 from LAX and putting it on YUL will be more profitable than leaving a smaller aircraft on the YUL route.

During summer, AF flies to LAX 2 daily B772 + 4 weekly B744 (CDG-LAX-Tahiti-LAX-CDG) + a code share agreement with Air Tahiti Nui (A343: PPT-LAX-CDG-LAX-PPT).

So that's a larger capacity in total than the single B744 during winter.

I believe this is a seasonality capacity adjustment. Peak season for U. S. - Europe travel will necessitate more frequency. Coincides somewhat with the winnowing of France/U. S. - Tahiti travel for the winter months.

Put size a side for a second and think about the a/c it self. I could care less if it's December or August I would take a 777 over a 744 any day!
