Thu Mar 25, 2004 11:21 am

just heard this evening from two reliable sources that LOT is going to be buying 777s. 10 of them to be exact. can anyone else confirm this? can't wait to see our livery on that plane! Big grin

I don't think it's true, however I'd like for it to happen. The thing is however, the same would happen with the 777's as with the 767's, as they don't take care of the aircraft as they should. (I am speaking about the interiors)

see marek, all you think of is the interiors. i don't. what's your proof that they don't take care of thier a/c? they have a great safety record! the only problems i know they have are with thier APUs. by the way, one of the my sources has family flying for LOT, and not an ATR either.

Hmmmm.....Would be interesting. Any idea of what version and what engines? How many 767s do they have now? 10 777s seems like a big jump for them.

That would mean a lot of new routes. Currently they only have 5 767's and all of their long haul traffic to to North America. Chicago, Toronto, and New York to be more specific. They used to have long haul service to Asia, but I guess something happened where it was too expensive to fly over Russia so they cancelled that service. Hopefully they can restore some routes to Asia. I heard rumors that they were planning service to Delhi, but I am unsure what is happening with that situation. LOT was planning to fly to Miami a few years ago, where they even has signs in the airport for LOT, but nothing ever came of that idea. What is also interesting is that they can easily use the capacity of the 777 in the summer months, but they have been having problems filling up the 767's in the winter, so I wonder what their plan would be to deal with that situation.

and those 5 767s are worked pretty hard from my understanding.

although why do they need to triple their longhaul fleet in terms of aircraft and more than triple in it in terms of capacity? Will they get their of their 767s then?

I seriously doubt this information. 10 seems to be too big of a number. Something like maybe 5 or 6 would be reasonable but ten seems to be too much.

10 definitely seems high. 777 is another unlikely number. While LOT's 767 workhorses are put through their paces during the summer, LOT does experience longhaul slowdowns. What would justify buying a bigger plane...and twice as many as the current number of 767s? Not that I wouldn't want to see it happen, but...

LOT doesn't need the 777, They could most likely get some more 767 from UA or US I would think they have some that they would love to sell.

It would be gret to see LOT 777s but 10 seems a very high number considering that they currently have a total of 5 767s. We'll see what happens.

Would be interesting to see LOT go for the 777, as it would seem to indicate plans to greatly expand their long-haul network.

Although 10 is obviously a lot of aircraft for LOT (get it?), there is a very simple answer - not all 10 would be firm orders. From personal experience, I know when rumors like this comes along, we often hear the total amount of aircraft, but it is not broken down between firm and options. Case in point - Qatar's order for 10 A340-600s, was actually 2 + 8. Similar situation could be occuring here.

Watching the news. . .

I think a 777 would make a lot sense considering its 305 passenger seating capabilities in three classes or up to 440 on a single class ! In addition the 777 would have some 1000 km more range over the 767. That kind of capacity and range could certainly allow LOT to accommodate lower fares for a larger number of Polish travelers anywhere around the world. Even three B777 would be a good number for starting a such project.

Hence the reason this order won't happen.

Why Airbus, Airmale? Thought LOT was an almost "all Boeing" carrier? I know Airbus is offering their planes for sharp prices. Airbusses make less noise than Boeings (even the new generation Boeings make more noise than Airbusses).

KLM (Boeing lover) ordered the A330 too...

Whoa! 10 777s? If they're up to that they'd better get those slots in distant airports now.

They should start thinking about the replacements for the 767s. 7E7 would fit the best, but it doesn't exist yet. Next in line is the A330-200.

A 777 in a 3 class config does not make sense. Introducing the first class would be way too costly. So the business class should be beefed up. And PTVs in economy  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

LOT is currently in such a state that it must decide whether it's going to be a regional airline (as in Europe only and North Africa and Middle East Asia) or a longer range airline, which can offer good transit connections to other continents.

Even though its more likely they'll go for Airbuses to eventually replace its whole fleet, it would be great to see them order the 777s. Though I think 10 is way over the top for an airline that currently only operates a few 763s on its small long-haul network. Maybe the airline will try to position itself as a major Eastern European hub to compete with Vienna (and Austrian Airline).

I am astonished that LOT can utilize 5 B767. Is there really so much demand? And then these rumors about 10 B777? Maybe LOT should make its homework first, and then it should think about the big business.

In my eyes LOT is a regional carrier in an average manner. To get customers to countries far away it can use its partners of Star Alliance network.

Last year I had to use LOT for many travels to WAW and POZ. The quality of service (and meal) is far way from average. Often the attendants have been unfriendly, some of them really have problems with English language. Also the optical quality of the planes, especially inside the cabin. It looks a little bit uncared. Perhaps I am pampered by LH, but in the meantime I have to pay the same fares for a very different result.

LOT seems to be very well run indeed nowadays. And if LOT thinks they should buy 777:s I think they most certainly have very good reasons for it.

LOT has come a long way in the last couple of years both in fleet management and passenger service. I think they can attract a lot (see that) of traffic coming from atlantic routes to the new member states of the EU.

I certainly believe in LOT nowadays, even if I´m not so sure about this rumor. But it could very well be true.

I just found an article in an Airliner World magazine a few months ago that mentioned the airline was considering placing an order for 6 A330s or B764s. So I guess that's not an options anymore.

I think they mean its a big jump in capacity from 5 767s and it is! But I am sure they have thought it through carefully...hopefully

Come on, it's not first of April. No way LOT will buy 10 B777 Perhaps you thought about 10 EMB170? That would be true.
Again: 767 replacement is due in a few years. 777 may be considered but it seems to be to big. Therefore A330-200 seems to be obvious option. Specially considering close cooperation with Lufthansa.

I think 7 a330's would be more appropriate, to replace current 767's and allow a little growth. i really dont see them buying 10 777's. Where the heck are the going to be able to use and fill them all, maybe 3 777's but not ten. i hope they've done their homework if this order is true.

LOT Operates 2-3 767s per day between WAW/II International (KRK / EPKK), Poland">KRK and ORD. This is as many flights as BA runs from LHR to ORD. During the summer months the LOT aircraft are usually full. LOT Probably could runs 5 767s per day. Since joining STAR, LOT probably could add one more just to feed UA at ORD. So a couple of 777s probably would make perfect sense on the ORD routes.

I don't see how they will use 10 777s. Even if they add a few new routes I still have a hard time believing that their passenger loads will be high enough.

i highly doubt that LOT will go for airbus a/c. look at the current political situation, they are very freindly with the US. ordering airbusses may be a poitical slap in the face to the US. don't forget, that PLL LOT is partly owned by the government.

the asia routes were dropped from scheduled service but still operate on a charter basis.

and no, i was not talking about the EMB-170s.

i also have a strange feeling about the order. personally, i would think that purchasing 767-400 a/c would be a better option. that way, you do not have to worry about type rating more crew. the majority of them are typed on the 767, so just giving them recurrency training to handle the bigger a/c would be a smarter decision. at least, that's what i would do.

Cancidas, I am not sure if the 764ER would have range issues for getting to ORD from WAW.

I also think 10 777's is too much. Maybe it is that a group of airlines from Star Alliance have decided to buy 10 777's and LOT is one of them?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

well LOT currently flies the 762/3ER from WAW to ORD. and in correction to previous statements they will be getting only 4. i don't know why i misunderstood what ania was telling me. anyway, they'll be coming in about 2 or 3 years.

4 sounds much better then 10, I could see them going for 4 of them, especially now that they are in the Star Alliance and will not only be able to feed more to the other carriers, but they are feeding pax to LOT.

I dont know what your talking about. At summers peak there are only 2 LOT flights a day to ORD. One from II International (KRK / EPKK), Poland">KRK and the other from WAW but this is only 3 out of 7 days of the week. There are never 3x to ORD.
