Cyprus Airways To Pull Out Of CMB!?

Thu Mar 25, 2004 4:45 pm

I heard, that CY will have it's last flight from LCA to CMB on the 30th March 04 and CMB flts will stop due to financial problems.

Just for the once interested, the UL 332 which was AOG beginning of this month was 4R-ALB.

cheers

Yes, with CY in financial trouble they decided to axe CMB, especially as it was a "new" route and had not fully developed in its own right.
DXB will continue to ge the A320s though.

Does anyone know how were the loads like when they did operate into Colombo? I assume the yields would not have been too crash hot.

I read that the vast majority of CY's services are unprofitable, with the notable exception of London, Athens and Thessaloniki. As these three destinations are in Europe, I wonder whether the unprofitable routes extend into Africa (Cairo), the Middle East and beyond (CMB).

I would imagine that DXB is profitable too. Is that the case?

weren't they just working with someone to shore up operations? when i look at their schedules they seem to have a lot of inefficiencies.

they overnight the crew after a 45 minute flight? even if it is to make connections that seems ridiculous.

offering a morning connection might require them to fly there in the evening before. maybe there are reasons, maybe there are none ...

Maybe the last route they will ever stop will be BEY (beirut international, Lebanon).

Many lebanese travel to Europe using CY via LCA due to their competitive prices. I travelled more than one to CDG on their A330-243, with very good IFE in Y class.

In fact, on the 270 passengers their A330 was carrying to Paris, 80% are passengers connecting to/from Lebanon.

Definitely a good route for them !

Cyprus Airways does very well in Beirut.

For the summer season, it will be upgraded from daily A320 to 10x weekly A320 and 2x weekly A319 for a total of 12 weekly flights.

There maybe a new international airline starting up in Cyprus in the near future if all goes well, but that is all I can tell you at the moment - but remember you heard it here first.
