Airport With The Highest % Of Connecting Passenger

Thu Mar 25, 2004 10:18 pm

Based on a book that I read few years back, the title went to Atlanta-Hartsfield with something like 80% connecting passengers. Does this statistic still hold true today? What about other US hub airports like ORD, EWR, IAD, IAH, SLC, DTW, MSP, MEM, PIT, CLT?

No doubt the airport with the highest % of connecting passengers is in the US. Now what about non-American airports? I'm guessing it's one of these airports : DXB, SIN, AMS, FRA, LHR, MXP.

Also, if you have the figures for any airport you know, whether or not it has a high % of connecting passengers, please share with us here. It's good to have a comparison of various airports across the globe. Cheers.

STL probably used to be up there a few years ago.

I bet MIA, AMS, NRT, SIN, HKG, LAX and even JFK are quite high up, although they all have a lot of O&D too.

To be quite specific, I believe I read somewhere that the majority of passengers flying between DUB and LHR are connecting to onward flights.

I'd also have to agree that CVG has to be up there percentage wise!

Hi,
I would have to agree with those who said CVG and LHR. I also think ORD, JFK, DFW, and LAX are big ones too. MIA has a lot for Latin America travel, but not so much for domestic.
As InnocuousFox said, I bet STL was up there back-in-the-day with TWA and AA.

Why not ATL. Biggest airport in the world with to Airlines Hubs. Its not like Atlanta is a very big tourism destination. Sure they have Bussisness but not 40% of their Traffic.

LHR is not as high as you might think and by no means the highest proportion in the world. According to BAA the figure is just over 30%.

I'm not that surprised that LHR isn't a major hub through which people connect, as it is the UK's main gateaway (for Britons leaving and foreigneers arriving), thus meaning it has plenty of O&D.

And that would apply to just about any major airport in a large population area such JFK, LAX, SFO, etc. SIN on the other hand with only a couple of million people must have a very high percentage of transfers. In the US I'd guess Denver.

It used to be that ORD had 60% connecting traffic and 40% O&D traffic. Whether this statistic is still accurate, I don't know.

I read somewhere in the last couple of months that ORD was the number one airport in America for international passengers making connections, both in terms of percentage of international passengers connecting and volume of passengers.

It's doubtful that it is ATL...believe it or not, ATL is actually the second-largest O&D market east of the Mississippi (behind ORD, and only LAX and LAS are larger within the US)...having not looked it up, I'd have to guess CVG, although the reasons are compounded by the fact that Delta cannibalizes its O&D traffic by having fares so ridiculously high there (and many of the passengers who go from surrounding cities like DAY and SDF are routed right back through Covington, Kentucky)

I highly doubt that SFO and LAX can compare to ATL or ORD due to the fact that there are very few domestic connections at these airports. ORD and ATL have a huge number of flights and their location ideally situated for connections because they are in the center of larger areas. While LAX and SFO probably have a lot of connections to Asia, they probably generate most of their traffic O/D due to large populations and centrally located facilities.

Statistics I can find for transit pax:
Heathrow (2002) - 0.51% (~350k vs ~63m)

Atlanta (Jan 2004) - 8% or 4% depending whether you count enplaning and deplaning seperately or as an average (transit are counted as one). (Aug 2003) - 10% or 5%.

Some summary info (doesn't distinguish transit pax in the free version)

False alarm, I got confused between monthly ATL and yearly LHR... sorry, figures above are roughly correct.

However, the CAA figures for LHR don't compare with the BAA figures posted by FlyLondon. Either that or I've lost the plot... http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/80/airport_data/200312/Table_09_Terminal_and_Transit_Pax.pdf

ORD, JFK, DFW, and LAX are big ones too

Interesting with LAX... as they are the largest O&D airfield, but still more than 40% of their traffic is connecting

Amsterdam. They have a population of 768,000 people, but the airport serves over 40 million.

Since we're talking percentage here, I'd be surprised if MEM was not up there. That is a smallish city, and other than, say, Graceland, and the Civil rights museum, it's sort of sleepy. Granted NWA is reducing it to the point of hublet, but still how much of that traffic is O/D? Atlanta itself may be a small city but the metro area is huge and lots of business travellers along with tourists.

Ah... transit is not the same as connecting it seems. The former is where you stay on the plane, the latter where you get off and board a different plane. Difference in terminology. Sorry for the confusion.

If we are looking at airports with the highest percentage of connecting passengers relative to total passengers, then it seems hub airports with the least number of O&D passengers will have the highest connecting percentage. For these reasons, I would look at PIT, CLE, and CVG.

I'd have to disagree with JFK... there's so much point to point traffic out of there that it couldn't be that high in terms of connecting passengers.

My guesses... SLC, MEM, CVG. Think smallish cities with large operations but not much O&D.

ATL is high up there, but ATL also is one of the biggest O&D markets in the country(approximately 45% of ATL's traffic is O&D), Atlanta's O&D is bigger than the city of Dallas's. CVG must be high up there though, also MEM.

For connecting traffic only....it's ATL. ORD is a close second.

It's amazing how the answers in these threads get so off of the original point/question.

It's also amazing how far your answer is from the correct one. It's already been stated that 45% of ATL's traffic is O&D, thus 55% is connecting. MEM has at least 70% (if not 80%) of its passengers connecting.

As far as sheer volume of connecting passengers, ATL and ORD probably lead the pack. But that wasn't the question. Please pay a little more attention before you start blasting everyone who did read the original question and replied.

I think MIA has a lot of connecting passengers doesn´t it?? - specially to latin america...
I have already gone to MIA many times, but to connect with MCO later!! I never stayed at the city... (not because I don´t like it, just because I never had the opportunity)

Some 4-year Old Data

Fri Mar 26, 2004 7:45 am

Dunno if Aviation Daily has printed such a table since, but in their issue for 3 Apr 2001 they listed connecting-plus-transit percentages for the top 50 US airports. Of those 50, the top percentages (for year ending 30 June 2000)

CVG 75.4
CLT 74.2
MEM 65.6
PIT 65.3
STL 64.7
ATL 63.3
DFW 61.5
IAH 59.7
MSP 54.9
SLC 54.7
DTW 53.7
ORD 53.0
DEN 52.8

Of the airports listed, FLL had the lowest percentage: 4.9.

LAX was 24.8 percent, EWR was 22.0, JFK 14.3 (that one I wouldn't have guessed) and LGA 9.2.
