42 Meter (138 Foot) A380 Section - Impressive

Fri Mar 26, 2004 6:56 pm

Yesterday, Airbus unveiled the front 42 metre fuselage section of the A380. I guess they've finally put together most of those sections that we've seen in photos the the past few months. The section is almost 2/3rds of the full plane length & constitutes most of the crew & passenger areas.

Anyway, I've only been able to find one small photo & it sure looks beasty (although the nose isn't completed). Can anyone find any more photos, so we can have a good look at this thing?

This shows just how much the 42 metre is:

An article on it can be found here:
Article in Seattle PI

'Workers in blue overalls from Airbus' plant in Saint-Nazaire in northwestern France cheered as the curtain rose on the 138-foot-long fuselage section, about half the length of an American football field. A chorus sang parts of Verdi's "La Traviata" and Bizet's "Carmen."'

"We are perfectly on track," said Jean Marc Thomas, the head of Airbus' French unit.

Airbus sure knows how to play the publicity game Smile.

Oh, if you're wondering what about the back 30 (approx) metre section? That's basically completed too. There's a photo of it at:

Impressive, looks like the A380 is progressing nicely. I'm really curious to see the thing completed in one piece, does anyone have an estimate when this will be? It should be soon.

Thanks for the post & links. The A380 is going to a sight to see! Soon...

cheers, Ralph

Wow i cant wait for the day the a380 careers down the Toulouse runway and takes to the skies. There will be some emotional looks on the airbus employees faces that day, i wonder if they will broadcast it on TV. what a great day in aviation that will be. maybe i will have to hop over to france for the weekend.

Question of the decade:

IS THE A380 UGLY OR NOT??

I still can't make up my mind. Sure it's impressive, but from an aesthetic perspective, I still don't know!

IS THE A380 UGLY OR NOT??

Great Question

its never going to be the best looking plane in the fleet, but i think it will look good enough. These Drawings here look ok http://www.airliners.net/info/stats.main?id=29
It looks a lot better than the Artists impressions of 7E7, in my opinion and no ones ever going to dethrone the 737 for ugliest airliner in the sky.

Yea know........the more I look at the A380, the more it reminds me of an other airplane. Howard Hughes 'Spruce Goose'.

I will be shocked with the current condition of the worlds airlines if this thing really ever gets off the ground. Yes, I know orders have been placed, but orders can be cancelled.

Here's a better pic of the section. It's still quite small photo unfortunately, but better than others. Thanks to AJet for posting the link for it.

Finally, someone's put up some decent sized photos of the first 42 meters of the A380 fuselage. I was wrong in my earlier post because Airbus haven't actually joined together the three sections that make it up yet, but in the photos they have placed them beside each other. (The actual joining of these sections will be done in Toulouse where they are currently being transported).

Anyhow, these photos are still cool IMO because it gives a good idea of what it'll look like once they are put together.  Big thumbs up

WOW! A silly thought but nonetheless, imagine if that huge assembly ever broke loose from its' moorings (it'd never happen, I know). It would be like a huge rolling pin rolling people flat. A gruesome notion but I couldn't resist. Big grin

Regardless of what we think of the company(companies), this is still a quite signifiant event. I'm a Boeing fan till the end, but I couldn't help but get caught up in the excitement. I will be sad when the A380 takes the reigns of world's biggest airliner form my beloved 747, but I congratulate Airbus for such exciting times.

The 747 is still better though.  Laugh out loud (I had to say it to defend my user name!)  Laugh out loud

Yikes.. I sure hope they get that nose finished. Looks like Michael Jackson, and ironically made of plastic  Nuts

Wow... such harsh words for such great airplanes  Yeah sure

IMO, the A380 is not an asthetic design- it is an impressive one. Its sheer size speaks for itself. It will take my breath away, but for a different reason than say a 777 or 747. And are we looking at the same 7E7 concepts, looks damn good to me-

Dont get me wrong, i like the 737, its just not pretty IMHO. I dont like the nose of the 7e7 but i'll wait until they're both finished before i officially judge.

Is it just me or does the nose of that plane in the very very very last A380 link in this topic make it look like a huge caterpillar with a retarded grin on it's face? Big grin

No seriously, I'm excited. Can't wait to fly on one. Preferably a passenger version. Who made the launch order?

Beauty is very subjective; people, cars, aircraft. So, you'll either like the A380 or you wont. Its looks wont affect whether it is successful or not. The market will decide on that one over the coming years, and all sorts of factors can affect that.

Personally, I like both Boeing and Airbus aircraft, as well as lots of other manufacturers too. I'm sure both will continue regardless of the outcome of the 7E7 or A380.
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

The Airbus-4U website has a new article about how the A380 is coming together. The page includes some videos of the parts being transported
