Which Airline / Aircraft Served Your First Flight?

Sat Mar 27, 2004 12:22 pm

I was just wondering what airline and aircraft served your first time flying. For me, it was in July 1988. It was Midway Airlines , a DC-9, from MDW-MCO.

I was so young, (like less then a year), so I have no idea, but it was ORD - PHX - ORD in 1983.

First one I remember: 1991, SEA - ORD - SEA, UA DC-10.

My first flight was PHL-BDA on USAir, circa late March 1993. I don't know what aircraft it was on, but I'd probably guess a 733/734.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

An Iberia 747 MAD-JFK on August 26, 1976. I was five years old and my family was moving to the United States from Spain. I still have vivid memories of that day although I was very young.

A Virgin Atlantic 747-400 from LGW-MIA my first flight brought me to my new home, America, from England. I was 10 years old. Still remember walking the length of the coach cabin, took me over 5 minutes non stop, and the feeling of walking uphill towards the front of the plane. They played "The futures so bright, I gotta wear shades" when we reached MIA. My Mum bought me a "Fly Virgin" T-Shirt, I got harassed at school for wearing it, was to young to know the definition of Virgin.

"More experience than our name suggests" Funny Sir Richard, funny.

Now in My I get to fly VS again, this time MCO-LGW-MCO. The sad part is it that it is to go see my grandfather who has cancer, the cool part is my wife is coming with me. It will be a big change for her from the SAN-MCO trips on Southwest.

First flight I was on was Trans Texas Air (predecessor to Texas International), ABI-LBB, on some sort of prop (maybe a Convair?) This was in 1977.

The first flight I remember was on WN, MAF-ELP, in July 1987.

I believe I was in first grade and the year was 86 or something...

It was a United DC-10 from SEA-ORD (second person in this thread with that flight...) that connected with a 727-200 from ORD-RDU.

1963 and on my way to Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes Ill. The Navy chartered an old American Airlines DC-7 and we flew from LAX to ORD with stops in San Diego, Phoenix, Denver and St. Louis to pick up other new recruits. The flight was over ten hours long with all the stops and the slow DC-7. The take off from LA out over the Pacific was magical. I was just 17.

It must have been around 1974 - not quite sure when exactly, because I was only 2 years old at the time... it was an Airbus A300 operated by Lufthansa on the 175mi flight from FRA to HAJ, and it experienced an engine and hydraulics failure after takeoff. My parents and my sister were quite terrified throughout the flight, I fell asleep... Big grin

Wein Airlines DC-3
Fairbanks-Kotzebue-Nome-Fairbanks

Flew low enough over the Brooks range you could see the cariboo and mountain goats.

Airport used the metal grating from WW2 instead of cement or gravel.

Crews either climbed very steeply to get over or dove to get the tourist "under/over" the Artic Circle.

With my momma before I was born when she went flying in a J-3 Cub she used to rent at Skylark Airport, which is in East Windsor, Connecticut in March, 1984.

After that, when she was 8 months pregnant in an Eastern 727 stuck on the ground in May for a while, and she said it was HOT on that tarmac in the airliner stuck in line. That was May 1984.

Otherwise, in 1987 in November when we flew down to Alabama on Eastern again, a 727 that took us house hunting. I remember getting a little Eastern coloring book, getting a huge wad of gum stuck in my hair (luckily FAs have scissors), and that the lavs were sea green with big Smurfs on the walls. I was three. I presume we changed planes in Atlanta and flew on a DC-9 to Huntsville but I'd have to ask Mom because I don't remember that segment.

Dad didn't like flying Eastern at the time. He said the employees had a bad attitude and were surly towards passengers. But Eastern had cheap fares in its desperate bid to stay alive, and the employees were justifiably p'oed at Lorenzo.

I was only a few months old when I went on my first light. It was with Egyptair on their LHR-CAI route back in the early 80s. Not sure which aircraft it was but my older brother thinks it was a 767 (I showed him some pics). It was probably one like this (a 762 in LHR):

In the late 70's I was twice on small single engine aircraft, I believe a Cessna 180 and a twin engine Beechcraft (?) out of Lincoln Park, NJ airport.
My first Airline flight was in August 1980, EWR-LAX-EWR, on UA, DC-10 both ways. I was 26 years old, alone, my first vacation trip on my own. It was amazing to be in something so big on both the outside and inside. My parents took me to the airport, remember they went with me to the gate (this was LONG before 9/11!) My father loved airplanes and wanted to go just to see the airport and aircraft. I wasn't nervous the whole time, but instead excited to be on a flight. I remember the music on the sound system was a song by Journey. I spent 2 weeks in Califronia, was my first time there. I drove around the LA area, then went to Sequia N.P., Yosemite N.P., saw a friend knew from back east in the Fresno area, then on to San Francisco, and drove along the PCH. It was an awesome experience and a beginning of many vacation trips in the US, Europe, Australia and NZ since then.
